DIVERSITY DEFINED
1. The state of being diverse, variety
2. The condition of having or being composed of different elements
3. The inclusion of individuals representing more than one national origin, color,
religion, socioeconomic stratum, sexual orientation, etc.
“Workplace diversity refers to the variety of differences between people in an
organization. That sounds simple, but diversity encompasses race, gender, ethnic group,
age, personality, cognitive style, tenure, organizational function, education, background
and more.” (multiculturaladvantage.com)
MULTICULTURAL
ORGANIZATION
Katherine Miller’ guide to
Organizational Communication states
that a fully multicultural organization goes
beyond affirmative action quotas and
support for minority groups, going
through several stages to do so. Also, full
integration of women, people of color, and
of different religious and cultural
backgrounds is emphasized. The
following slides will give detailed
examples to McDonald’s diversity.
McDONALD’S
CORE VALUES
On their website, McDonald’s states that their core values are what guides their
behavior, decisions, and actions through their communities. Their Standards of
Business Conduct demonstrates that commitment through messages of
clarity, guidance and resources on operating with fairness, integrity, and
honesty.
Conducting our activities in a manner that respects human rights as set out
in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights

STANDARDS
By Jay Kroc, founder of
McDonald’s Co.
The Three-Legged Stool concept is
simple; the three “legs” keep the
company’s structure together and
ensure the long-term benefit of the
company. These legs are the
owners and operators, the
suppliers, and the employees.
Kroc created a business model
that has worked for McDonald’s
for years: the Three-Legged
Stool
STAGES OF WORKPLACE DIVERSITY
Together, Morrison and Von Glinow described three phases of workplace
development in several areas of diversity.
STAGE ONE: FIRST-GENERATION AFFIRMATIVE ACTION
organization is concerned with meeting legally mandated requirements for
gender and ethnic diversity
Pros: fulfills legal mandations
Cons: Can lead to minority inclusion, intergroup conflict, distrust, and
STAGES OF WORKPLACE DIVERSITY
STAGE TWO: SECOND-GENERATION AFFIRMATIVE ACTION
The organization has met affirmative action quotas for the number of
employees
Emphasis shifts to supporting minorities and women
Pros: Org goes beyond meeting numbers, helps minorities and women with
specific care
Cons: None
STAGES OF WORKPLACE DIVERSITY
THIRD AND FINAL STAGE: MULTICULTURAL ORGANIZATION
The org moves beyond the concept of support for minority members to
the institution of policies that deliberately capitalize on cultural and
gender diversity
Creates an atmosphere of inclusion
Pros: Organization is fully incorporated with employees of different
backgrounds, who have jobs in all levels of the org; no Cons
NBMOA: National Black McDonald’s
Operators Association
In 1968, the black community experienced
numerous tragic deaths, from Dr. King to the
soldiers sent to the frontlines in Vietnam.
McDonald’s Corporation and its management
team decided that black business leaders are
better able to address issues and concerns in
the community where they live and work.
Consequently, on December 21, 1968, Herman
Petty of Chicago, opened his first restaurant in
the inner city Chicago, becoming the first Black
Owner/Operator of a McDonald’s franchise. It
was not an easy task operating a McDonald’s
restaurant in a so-called “hard-core”
neighborhood.
“NBMOA is a self-help
organization, established for
the purpose of working
together for the improvement
and betterment of each and
every African American
McDonald’s franchise owner,
supplier, and African
American society as a whole.”
NBMOA cont...
Roland Jones worked closely with Herman to
better store operations
By 1969, 12 African-American owned and
operated stores were in the Midwest
In order to face the many obstacles thrown at
them, store operators/managers had
routinely meetings to share ideas,
problems and concerns which led to the
formation of the NBMOA
MAY 1972 - first organized convention

the most diverse
companies in the world
McDonald’s supports more than 120 employee

employees, working mothers, young
professionals and many more
The “secret sauce”
to McDonald’s
diversity success is
persistence
PAT HARRISPat Harris began her career at the
McDonald’s Corporation over 40 years ago
as an administrative assistant and now
serves as the global chief of diversity.
Harris is responsible for the development
and implementation of diversity strategies
for more than 30,000 McDonald’s
restaurants in 118 countries. Under her
leadership, McDonald’s has been
recognized for its commitment to diversity
by a number of publications, including
Fortune magazine’s “Top 50 Places for
Minorities to Work,” Black Enterprise
magazine’s “Top 40 Companies for
Diversity,” and Latina Style magazine’s
“Best Companies for Latinas.”
Roberts began her career with the fast food giant in 1990 and
she steadily progressed to become vice president, general
manager for the company in 2009. Roberts held this position
for three years before taking on the role of senior vice
president, restaurant support officer in 2012—the position she
held prior to her current role. It was at this point in her career
that she realized her potential for C-suite success. She quickly
realized that McDonald’s afforded her unbelievable
opportunities to achieve her goals. Roberts nurtured her career
in accounting for seven years before transitioning into
marketing. From a regional marketing supervisor, she worked
her way up to senior marketing director, overseeing the market
activities of seven regions. Eventually, Roberts took the advice
of a mentor who encouraged her to look into management and
McDonald’s executive fast track. This meant going into
restaurant operations. The rest is history.

DON
THOMPSON
(2012-2015)
Donald “Don” Thompson joined McDonald's in 1990 after
working for a military aircraft manufacturer that is now part of
Northrop Grumman. At McDonald's, Thompson designed
robotic equipment for food transport and made control circuits
for cooking. He was hired and enrolled in the company’s Black
Career Development program. Thompson quickly rose on the
corporate ladder. By 1992, he was promoted to Project
Manager and Staff Director for the Quality Development
department. In 1994, and while there, he moved up from fry
cook to shift manager, then assistant manager and then co-
manager. By 1998, Thompson was promoted to regional
manager for the San Diego, California Region and oversaw 350
restaurants. He then was promoted to Senior Vice President of
the Midwest Division, which he was responsible for the
overseeing of 2,200 restaurants.On August 23, 2006, he
became the President of McDonald’s USA and McDonald's
Pyles is an Alabama native who opened his first
McDonald's in Milwaukee 19 years ago. Today, he
operates 16 McDonald's restaurants in Milwaukee.
He’s the only African-American McDonald's franchise
owner in Wisconsin. But there’s more. He’s also a
minister at Abundant Faith Church of Integrity on Good
Hope Road. To keep everything balanced, he calls out
“Halftime!” and the team comes together, like in
football, to look at what they’ve just done and see how
they can improve. In the “war room”, strategies for
running all 16 stores are planned out. Don Thompson
mentored him and suggested he check pout the
Milwaukee area.

McDonald’s Global Women’s
Initiative - developed in 2006, helps
women working at various locations
around the world, through
empowered, localized groups, with a
focus on continuous improvement.
This initiative has helped to increase
the representation of women as
restaurant managers, thus allowing
for McDonald’s to receive recognition
as a top company for women by the
Catalyst organization.

Why McD’s & DIVERSITY Works
Being a globalized, multicultural company, with 56 million customers
in 118 different countries, McDonald’s has no choice but to be accepting
of people from all cultural, racial, and gender backgrounds. Their diversity
and inclusion strategy states: Seeing differences as strengths, being
engaged in our communities, and respecting and valuing everyone on
both sides of the counter around the globe.
According to the inclusion and diversity team at McDonald's, it takes a
combination of knowing how to leverage a multicultural customer base, a
C-suite-led commitment to talent management, and academic-style
learning labs to be successful in a diverse world, and the company's
emphasis on diversity is boosting McDonald's long term sustainability.
CONCLUSION
“As a global company, McDonald’s does
business with suppliers from many countries
of diverse cultural, social and economic
circumstances. McDonald’s is committed to
fair employment practices and strives to
provide a safe, healthful and productive work
environment for its employees. In turn, we
strive to work with suppliers who share our
values. This means our suppliers are
expected to share our support of fundamental
rights for all people: to treat their employees
with fairness, respect and dignity and to
follow practices that promote health and
safety. “
McDonald’s has proven itself to
be a multicultural company over
the years. In a nutshell, the
company can always expand its
numbers and should eventually
have more minorities and
women in its top Exec positions.
QUESTIONS
1. With the recent debate on whether or not employees should make $15 an
hour, would McDonald’s survive in a Communistic society? Why or why
not?
2. In 10 years, in what ways will McDonald’s include more women and
minorities into the Executive positions offered in the company?
3. Is it possible that more than ⅛ people will be a McDonald’s employee in
2027? 2037?
4. What new positions will McDonald’s present in time?
