Five key factors that affect language learning strategies are identified: motivation, gender, cultural background, attitudes and beliefs, and type of tasks. Motivation and gender influence the variety of strategies used, with motivated and female students using a wider array. Cultural background can determine strategies like memorization. Learners' attitudes and beliefs strongly impact their strategy use, while the nature of the task determines suitable strategies. Additional factors are age/level and learning style, which also guide students' strategy choices. Tolerance of ambiguity further influences the diversity and flexibility of strategies employed.
