How is camera, (sound), and
mise en scene used in the
opening of ‘Skyfall’ to
establish narrative and
setting?
JAMES BOND
James Bond is a ‘lone soldier’ as he is mostly in his own when completing
his mission which suggests to the viewers that throughout the film, he will
continue his missions on his own as the opening scene determines the
expectations of the rest of the film.
The camerawork shows a long shot but shows the character slowly walking
into the camera, gradually making it a close up, almost like he is walking
towards the audience. The camera then shows a close up of an object,
possibly a hard drive, which gives the viewers the impression that this is a
significant object in the film, and that is what all the action is for. The
advanced camera work in the film makes it professional and intriguing to
watch.
ANALYSIS
The out of focus silhouette of the character at the start creates an effect of
mystery as it intrigues the audience about who the blurry silhouette is.
The low key lighting creates a sinister and mysterious effect as it doesn’t show
a lot and leaves the viewers ‘in the dark’ about what’s happening in the shot.
The close up shots show detail on something specific that’s being focused on,
giving the viewers an closer and more detailed view on something specific.
ANALYSIS
The low angle shows the importance of the character as by showing the
character from below, it makes them look big and strong.
Point of view shows the perspective of the character and shows what they can
see that is happening in front of their eyes.
The prop used (a gun) makes the audience think there is danger involved and
someone’s life is in danger, as he may want to hurt someone or protect
himself, which gives an effect of mystery and manages to intrigue the
audience.
