Reading is the most important language skill for acquiring a new language. It involves decoding symbols to derive meaning from text. People read for various reasons such as obtaining information, verifying knowledge, pleasure, and enhancing knowledge. Reading material includes books, newspapers, articles, notices, correspondence, multimedia, fiction, non-fiction, academic works, and more. Reading skills are important for all subjects in school and daily life. Skimming and scanning are techniques used to identify main ideas or locate specific information when reading. Skimming allows getting the general idea quickly while scanning focuses on finding a single fact accurately.
