English reading comprehension is among the skills that students in Indonesia must be
skilled at since the recent tests in Indonesia’s national examination more emphasized much
on reading (Yusuf & Fauzan, 2016).
*This presentation aimed to explain about skimming and scanning techniques (SST).
How can we improve our reading?
What is Skimming?
Skimming is very fast reading. When you skim, you read to get the main ideas and a few, but
not all, of the details. To skim rapidly, you must leave out parts of an article or story.
Skimming is very useful skill. It will allow you to get many information quickly from anything
you read. Knowing how to skim will make you a better reader.
Read the title.
Read the subtitle or introduction.
Read the first sentences of each paragraph.
Notice any picture, charts, or graphics.
Read the summary or last paragraph if
there is one.

What is Scanning?
Scanning is a reading skill you use when you want to locate a single fact or a specific bit of
information without reading every part of story, article, list,or document.
You use scanning many times in your daily actifivies. For example, You scan: the channel listing on
the TV, the telephone directory, and then an alpabhetic word on the dictionary.
NB : Search for specific information ( keywords )
How to Scan
When scanning, make sure that your eyes move quickly. It will help you to get information you need
fast too. These steps will help you to do scanning.
1. Read introduction to each exercise.
2. Complete the exercise by reading each question and scanning for the answer.
3. You can use the keywords to recognize the material.
4. Practice daily

PALU, Indonesia - Bright-colored body bags were placed side-by-side in a freshly dug mass
grave Monday, as a hard-hit Indonesian city began burying its dead from the devastating
earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 840 people and left thousands homeless.
The death toll, largely from the city of Palu, is expected to keep rising as areas cut off by
the damage are reached. The magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck at dusk Friday and generated
a tsunami said to have been as high as 6 meters (20 feet) in places.
Local army commander Tiopan Aritonang said 545 bodies would be brought to the grave from
one hospital alone. The trench dug in Palu was 10 meters by 100 meters (33 feet by 330
feet) and can be enlarged if needed, said Willem Rampangilei, chief of Indonesia's National
Disaster Mitigation Agency.

Disadvantage:
The information extracted from the process SST was just enough to provide a simple
and accurate answer to the questions from the reading texts. But they were not able
to explain the answer in more detail if the teacher asked them to do so.
This is as what Ngoc (2015, p. 197) says skimming is “a superficial reading, not an in-
depth reading”.
This problem was dealt by the teacher by discussing the text together with the class
after every group task; students are expected to learn from each other on grasping all
details of the text.

  • 3. English reading comprehension is among the skills that students in Indonesia must be skilled at since the recent tests in Indonesia’s national examination more emphasized much on reading (Yusuf & Fauzan, 2016).
  • 4. *This presentation aimed to explain about skimming and scanning techniques (SST).
  • 5. How can we improve our reading?
  • 6. What is Skimming? Skimming is very fast reading. When you skim, you read to get the main ideas and a few, but not all, of the details. To skim rapidly, you must leave out parts of an article or story. Skimming is very useful skill. It will allow you to get many information quickly from anything you read. Knowing how to skim will make you a better reader.
  • 7. Read the title. Read the subtitle or introduction. Read the first sentences of each paragraph. Notice any picture, charts, or graphics. Read the summary or last paragraph if there is one. 1 2 3 4 5
  • 8. What is Scanning? Scanning is a reading skill you use when you want to locate a single fact or a specific bit of information without reading every part of story, article, list,or document. You use scanning many times in your daily actifivies. For example, You scan: the channel listing on the TV, the telephone directory, and then an alpabhetic word on the dictionary. NB : Search for specific information ( keywords )
  • 9. How to Scan When scanning, make sure that your eyes move quickly. It will help you to get information you need fast too. These steps will help you to do scanning. 1. Read introduction to each exercise. 2. Complete the exercise by reading each question and scanning for the answer. 3. You can use the keywords to recognize the material. 4. Practice daily

  • 11. Disadvantage: The information extracted from the process SST was just enough to provide a simple and accurate answer to the questions from the reading texts. But they were not able to explain the answer in more detail if the teacher asked them to do so. This is as what Ngoc (2015, p. 197) says skimming is “a superficial reading, not an in- depth reading”. This problem was dealt by the teacher by discussing the text together with the class after every group task; students are expected to learn from each other on grasping all details of the text.
  • 12. 4 3 2 1 The benefits of Skimming and Scanning SPEED Look for a specific information from a text reading or books quickly. TIME Explore many pages of the book in a short time. EFFICIENCY Not waste of time looking for information on the book. COMPREHENSIO N Improve student’s comprehension in reading.
  • 13. Conclusion 1. Skimming and scanning is used when reading all types of documents. 2. We can get information quickly with skimming and scanning techniques. 3. We can improve reading comprehension trough skimming and scanning.
