Six districts in the state of Haryana have been without government food inspectors to sample food items for adulteration. This is due to shortages of inspectors and reluctance of doctors to accompany them for sampling and to appear in court. To address this issue, the state government issued a notification appointing government doctors posted in health centers as food inspectors for their jurisdiction. However, some in the health department remain skeptical of this approach as food inspectors play the role of public prosecutors in court cases against adulterators, which doctors may not want to take on. The financial commissioner said this only provides enabling powers to doctors and is not meant to replace food inspectors fully.
