We have written quite a bit about Panama mountain grown organic coffee. This is the first time we have mentioned Gesha coffee, a gourmet variety grown in the highlands of Chiriquí Province in the west of the country. Panama is the last Central American country before you get to Colombia (South America). Once part of Gran Colombia, the Panama has a climate along its mountainous spine similar to the much larger Eje Cafetero in Colombia. It is in the coffee growing region of Panama near the town of Boquete that planters grew a left rust resistant Ethiopian coffee variety. Gesha gets its name from the Ethiopian village where it was first found. Planters tried Gesha in the 1950s but it was when the variety was resurrected in the early 2000s that its quality was first noted. Today Gesha coffee sells for as much as $35,000 for a 100 pound bag at auction! Considering that standard green coffee sells for a couple of dollars a pound, the Gesha coffee variety is in the stratosphere.
About the Gesha Coffee Variety
Gesha is an heirloom varietal. The seed stock is extremely pure. It has not been cross bred or altered. It is a faithful replica of the original seed stock from around Gesha, Ethiopia. The plant was tried in Central America in the 1950s because of its disease resistance. However, it only grows above 3,000 feet and is rather low yielding. It is said that because Gesha plant grows fewer berries it puts more flavor into each one. Many growers gave up on Gesha until companies like Starbucks raised public awareness of high quality coffees.
Where Can You Find the Gesha Coffee Variety?
Hacienda la Esmeralda is a coffee farm in Panama famous for its small plots of Gesha coffee. However, the Gesha coffee variety is also grown in selected locations in Honduras, Costa Rica and Colombia. A unique Gesha variety is called Santuario and sells typically for about $80 a pound.
The price of coffee has gone up a bit on the NYMEX due a predicted shortfall in Brazil’s coffee crop. But, the price that you pay for coffee is going up even more due to a coffee supply chain nightmare that is affecting global shipping or all goods.

For many folks there is a good cup of coffee, OK coffee, or bad coffee. In the world of true coffee lovers there is good coffee or exceptional coffee. And, for the true connoisseur there is gourmet coffee, either regular or one of the organic coffee brands. Although there is USDA certified organic coffee there is no agency that certifies gourmet coffee brands.

But, all gourmet coffees have several things in common. These coffees are all Arabica coffee varieties grown in volcanic soil in mountainous terrain. And a gourmet coffee has been carefully processed and quickly delivered to the consumer. No matter how good a roasted coffee was to begin with, it does not age like a fine wine. Old coffee is never gourmet coffee.
And, a gourmet coffee is freshly roasted, French roast or otherwise, in a small batch, immediately ground, and brewed. Coffee starts to age the moment the contents of the roasted bean are exposed to the air. And ground coffee is really not gourmet because it has aged before it ever got to you.
Although we like to promote Fair Trade coffees, being fairly traded is not an issue with gourmet coffees as they have a following and charge plenty for their coffee.

In the coffee growing region of Colombia they grow varieties like Caturra at lower altitudes around 3,000 to 5,000 while Arabica grows best in the 5,000 feet and above range. Part of this is because of coffee leaf rust which thrives at lower altitudes. As temperatures have risen on the mountainsides of Colombia, Arabica is being planted higher and higher while left rust resistant Caturra replaces it in the low and middle altitudes. This problem is not limited to Colombia as climate change drives coffee farmers to higher elevations.

[D]rinking coffee increases adrenaline. Adrenaline increase heart rate and blood flow, increases blood flow specifically to the brain and helps improve short term speed and endurance. Scientifically, the caffeine in coffee is an ergogenic aid for sustaining a high degree of effort over the short term. And coffee only lasts just so long and then the body metabolizes and excretes it. Typically half of the caffeine that you ingest at 7 am is gone by 1 pm (a six hour half-life). If our hypothetical 154 pound runner drinks two cups of coffee and gets 400 milligrams into his system he will still have 200 milligrams six hours later. This is plenty of time for a slow marathon runner to complete the course or for someone to complete a soccer match.
The reason coffee enhances athletic performance is that it allows you to burn more calories faster giving you more energy. The key to losing weight is to burn calories as well. So, drink your organic coffee and go work out. It is a good way to lose weight!

We therefore aimed to evaluate whether coffee and tea consumption are associated with liver stiffness in the general population.

Lay summary
The Rotterdam Study is a large ongoing population study of suburban inhabitants of Rotterdam in whom data on liver stiffness, as proxy for liver fibrosis, presence of fatty liver on ultrasound and detailed information on coffee and tea consumption were obtained in 2,424 participants. The consumption of herbal tea and daily consumption of three or more cups of coffee was related to the presence of lower liver stiffness, independent of a great number of other lifestyle and environmental factors. Previous studies have found a protective effect of coffee on established liver disease and we now show for the first time that this effect is already measurable in the general population.
Researchers previously knew that people with a predisposition for liver disease were helped by drinking coffee but now it turns out that the protective effect of coffee is seen in all persons. We recently wrote that the incidence of liver cancer is lower in coffee drinkers.

Sometimes “single origin” means it all came from the

can be found in any quantity.

There are two issues when you want to find single origin
coffee. One is that not all coffee farmers can provide
unique coffee varieties. Much of the coffee in Colombia,
for example, is a mix of Arabica varieties and comes to
the standard of “usual good quality” or UGQ. It is
probably excelso which means a larger bean size and
higher, export quality. You may need to go to the region in
question to talk to the local coffee cooperatives or
individual coffee farmers to find out what varieties they
grow and how carefully they preserve their unique coffee
varieties.
