This document discusses simple ions and compound ions. Simple ions are formed from single atoms, such as magnesium Mg2+ and chloride Cl-. Compound ions are formed from groups of joined atoms, such as ammonium NH4+ and carbonate CO32-. Compound ions are also known as polyatomic ions. Some common simple and compound ions and their symbols or formulae are listed. Sodium and potassium ions are used in the body to send electrical signals between nerve cells, and their activity can be measured using an electroencephalograph.
