October 29, 2019, I was invited to present the keynote of the LegalTech Alliance meeting on eDiscovery and Big Data, in which 11 law departments from the Universities of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands participate.
eDiscovery is more and more important than ever. Future legal professionals must be able to deal with large electronic data sets so they can:
- Take decisions based on facts and not based on guesses and assumptions;
- Answer information requests timely, accurately and complete;
- Avoid high cost, reputation damage, regulatory measures, business disruption and stress!
It is great that the LegalTech Alliance understands that need and that they embed eDiscovery in their educational programs.

November 20, 2019, it was my great pleasure to present a special lecture on Artificial Intelligence and Application in the Legal Domain. In this lecture I discuss how the development of machines that can learn, reason and act intelligently – Artificial Intelligence (AI) – is advancing rapidly in the legal domain. In some areas, machine intelligence have even already surpassed the limits of what the brightest human minds are capable of achieving, especially in the field of eDiscovery and Legal Review of large data set.
In others, machines still struggle with seemingly basic tasks. Nonetheless, breakthroughs in AI already have profound impact on the legal profession. AI is set to improve our world now and will continue to do so in the future. At the same time, there is the fear of losing control.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is transitioning to using cloud email and collaboration services provided by Microsoft Office 365. This will provide improved capabilities, availability, and pricing compared to the on-premises system. Key challenges include completing required background investigations for Microsoft staff supporting the system and integrating the new identity management, archival, and security systems. The transition involves piloting the new services before a full bureau-wide migration. The goal is to provide more cost-effective services while establishing a model that can be adopted by other government agencies.

Companies named data brokers collect consumer data including behavioral and private and then sell to companies those use this data for personalized marketing and selling. There is no doubt that this is good for businesses, but is this same good for consumers? Is this just positively affects buying experience of customers? How much does reliable this kind data event for companies? How to keep a balance between new opportunities derived by Big Data to companies and privacy concern it brings to consumers?
In proposed speech we will try to find out some of the answers to these and other questions.

Today, pockets of practice and traditional workflows have undergone massive transformation, viz. legal research and document reviews in discovery, regulatory disclosures, M&A, and contract management. Many alternative legal services providers, “legaltech” vendors, and other “NewLaw” businesses were born in the 2010s. Yet, truly full-service “robo-lawyers” are nowhere in sight. This seminar will examine –from a legaltech industry perspective– the technological influences on emerging industry trends, including the applications of analytics and natural language processing. The discussion will focus on how software encodes the law and legal processes in software, the related technological and ethical challenges, and the adoption barriers in legal practice.

Even with the power of today’s modern computers it still big challenge for business and government organizations to manage, search, analyze, and visualize this vast amount of data as information. Data-Intensive computing which is intended to address this problems become quite intense during the last few years yielding strong results. Data intensive computing framework is a complex system which includes hardware, software, communications, and Distributed File System (DFS) architecture.
Just small part of this huge amount is structured (Databases, XML, logs) or semistructured (web pages, email), over 90% of this information is unstructured, what means data does not have predefined structure and model. Generally, unstructured data is useless unless applying data mining and analysis techniques. At the same time, just in case if you can process and understand your data, this data worth anything, otherwise it becomes useless.

The Cyber Infrastructure (CI) vision has been around for a couple of years. The development of such infrastructure requires a radical design philosophy and a foundation to build upon. It needs the development of an architecture that defines the components, their organizations and their interactions. Since the CI has an international scope and connections, this specification will as much as possible be done in international cooperation and leads to international standards and agreements.
The main challenge of a CI is to provide an unified and standardized way for the composition of trustworthy, multi-domain and on-demand services for an international research group (or virtual organization). These services can be network resources, storage and HPC, but also collaboration tools for writing papers and exchanging research data. The CI demands a form of service orchestration where virtualization and management of services and resources in a distributed, heterogeneous environment is essential.

Data-Intensive computing which is intended to address this problems become quite intense during the last few years yielding strong results. Data intensive computing framework is a complex system which includes hardware, software, communications, and Distributed File System (DFS) architecture.
Just small part of this huge amount is structured (Databases, XML, logs) or semistructured (web pages, email), over 90% of this information is unstructured, what means data does not have predefined structure and model. Generally, unstructured data is useless unless applying data mining and analysis techniques. At the same time, just in case if you can process and understand your data, this data worth anything, otherwise it becomes useless.

The main challenge of a CI is to provide an unified and standardized way for the composition of trustworthy, multi-domain and on-demand services for an international research group (or virtual organization). These services can be network resources, storage and HPC, but also collaboration tools for writing papers and exchanging research data. The CI demands a form of service orchestration where virtualization and management of services and resources in a distributed, heterogeneous environment is essential.

Patent information can be utilized in various ways depending on how it is understood. I have devised a method to extract useful insights for the development of new products or services from patents in specific technology fields by using the analysis and cognition capabilities of GPT-4 based ChatGPT. I have applied this to the fields of generative AI, metaverse, and Web3-based fintech.
For the case study, in the generative AI field, I examined Google's patent US10452978 "Attention-based sequence transduction neural networks" (this patent describes the transformer architecture, which is the basis of most large language models (LLMs) for generative AI); in the metaverse field, I looked at Meta's patent US11302063 "3D conversations in an artificial reality environment"; and in the Web3-based fintech field, I explored nChain's patent US10776761 "Virtual currency system."
I input into ChatGPT a guideline consisting of five key steps: identifying the main purpose of the patent invention, summarizing the technological innovations in the patent claims, describing potential products or services based on the technology, identifying the main industry participants, and evaluating competitive advantages. NFT financialization refers to bringing NFTs closer to financial use, mostly, by making NFT useful in DeFi protocols. NFT financialization is the most important element of NFT monetization innovation to overcome the low liquidity and high price volatility of almost all NFTs currently.
NFT Fractionalization splits a NFT into smaller fungible tokens that represent partial ownership of the NFT. The NFT is locked in a smart contract and the ownership remains with the original holder. Fractionalization can unlock liquidity for NFT owners and cheapens access to valuable NFTs, and improves the NFT market spectrum. An issue with fractionalization is a reconstitution after ractionalization. Buyout auctions alleviate the reconstitution problem to some extent.

NFT Lending uses NFT as collateral for loans. In peer-to-peer lending, borrowers and lenders manually negotiate and come to an agreement for loan terms such as duration, interest rates and loan-to-value ratios in a peer-to-peer fashion. This lending enables a customizable loan terms without a need to rely on price oracles. Because the matching process is manual time-to-liquidity may be slow. In peer-to-pool lending, liquidity providers fungible tokens into pools and borrowers take up loans from these pools instantaneously. Borrowers should put up their NFTs as collateral by locking them in smart contracts (digital vaults). This lending, however, must rely on price oracles to automate loan terms.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
