This document summarizes David Griscom's research journey studying defects introduced through radiation exposure in silica-based materials. It describes his initial incorrect model proposing that molecular hydrogen diffusion was responsible for interface states in MOS structures. Despite being wrong, the paper received many citations. Later work led Griscom to discover three types of self-trapped holes (STHs) that could explain experimental data. His analyses of electron spin resonance spectra supported detailed models of the STHs. Griscom's research helped explain radiation effects in glass fibers and thin films through the behavior and properties of the STH defects.

Three basic types of flat glass are manufactured: plain float glass, textured/patterned/wired glass, and laminated glass. Glass melting technology involves several steps: (1) batch melting where raw materials are heated to form a viscous liquid, (2) refining where gases are removed from the melt, (3) homogenization where the melt is uniform in composition, and (4) conditioning where the melt is prepared for forming. Furnaces can be cross-fired or end-fired regenerative furnaces, or recuperative furnaces which transfer heat from flue gases to preheat combustion air via radiation. Emissions from melting include nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, dust, and occasionally chlor
This document discusses the concepts of value, waste, and lean manufacturing. It defines value-added activities as those that directly change a product to meet customer needs, while non-value added activities are necessary but do not increase value. The main types of waste are identified as muda (non-value added work), mura (unevenness), and muri (overburdening work). Specific examples of muda include transportation, inventory, motion, waiting, overproduction, overprocessing, and defects. The document emphasizes that eliminating waste through lean principles can improve flow and reduce costs for companies.
anti reflective coatings on the solar photo voltaic panel'sRajneesh Gautam
Rajneesh Kumar Gautam presented on antireflective coatings. Antireflective coatings help reduce the reflection of light off of surfaces, improving efficiency. Typically 4% of incoming light is reflected off photovoltaic modules without coatings. Coatings work through destructive interference between incident light rays using thin film layers with thicknesses of around one quarter the wavelength of light. Common coating application areas include solar panels, optical windows, and displays where reducing surface reflections increases performance. Coatings are applied using methods like chemical vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition, and spraying.

Silica sand
Silica sand is one of the most
common varieties of sand found
in the world. It is used for a wide
range of applications, and can be
purchased from various suppliers
throughout the world. Silica sand
is used in industrial processing, to
make glass, as fill, and to create
molds and castings.
Silica sand is used throughout the world, and in so many different ways
it is hard to imagine a world without it. From water filtration, to glass
manufacture, to industrial casting, to sand blasting, to producing
concrete, to adding texture to slick roads, silica sand impacts every aspect
of daily life. Many industrial suppliers carry silica sand in bulk
quantities, while some smaller household stores sell it in smaller amounts
for home or home construction use. One of the major uses of silica sand
in the modern world is as an ingredient in industrial concrete. Silica sand
produces the bulk of a great deal of concrete, although some concrete
bypasses its use for safety and strength reasons. At industrial scales, silica
sand can cost less than $0.50 US Dollars (USD) per pound, while the
consumer rate is around $1.50 USD per pound.

Silica sand
SILICA is the most abundant mineral found in the crust of the earth.
It forms an important constituent of practically all rock-forming
minerals. It is found in a variety of forms, as quartz crystals, massive
forming hills, quartz sand (silica sand), sandstone, quartzite, Tripoli,
diatomite, flint, opal, chalcedonic forms like agate, onyx etc., and in
with numerous other forms depending upon color such as purple
quartz (amethyst), smoky quartz, yellow quartz or false topaz
(citrine), rose quartz and milky quartz. Only pure quartz crystal or
rock crystal, untwined, clear, free from any inclusion, has an
important property:
It expands (mechanically) under the influence of electric current and
conversely pressure induces a measurable electric current. This
property is known as piezoelectricity. The current thus developed is

called piezoelectric current.
This property resulting from the
asymmetry of its atomic groups
makes quartz an effective
transducer for converting electrical
energy into mechanical energy and
vice-versa. This property in quartz
crystals was discovered in 1880-82
by Pierre and Jacques Curie and
remained a laboratory curiosity till
in 1921 when W.G. Cady, a
physicist, discovered that quartz
plates could be used to control the
frequency of wireless transmission circuits.
This discovery marked the dawn of quartz crystal application in modern
communication equipments. A very thin plate of quartz is so cut that the
frequency of the oscillating circuit corresponds with the quartz plate and
when such plate is inserted in a radio receiving set or radio transmitter it
prevents frequencies from wandering and deviation and greatly reduces
interference.
