Qualcomm also promotes sustainable practices through its supply chain, green restaurant certification, and environmentally-friendly chip design. The goal of these efforts is to lower Qualcomm's environmental impact and provide transparency to external stakeholders.
Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses
Even during an economic slowdown, innovators will rise to the occasion. A bakery in Victoria, Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses, is doing just that as my colleague Craig Beaver has recently uncovered in a recent article in Manufacturing Supply Chain Magazine.
Savings on carbon emissions by the company demonstrated that by some fairly straight forward engineering delivered landfill, gas and electricity emissions reductions of 92, 76 and 62%, respectively, along with water savings of 2.5Ml per annum. This led to an overall reduction of more than 5000 CO2e annually and tens of thousands of dollars in cost savings, a strong business improvement in itself.
But what caught my eye was the story around how the improved safety culture of the bakery was reducing bottom line costs, and well below its industry peers. The company has demonstrated a strong correlation between sustainability effort and performance, and its safety metrics. For example, during the transformation to a sustainabilityâfocused business, turnover reduced from 10% to 2 % per annum, incidents reduced by 58% from 33 to 14 per annum, and near misses decreased from 29 to 21 per annum.
As Craig illustrates, aside from the impact of carbon emissions and energy savings, itâs worth taking a deeper look at the impact of their sustainable business practices on their health and safety performance.
As a simple exercise:
They employ 150 people.
Assume average salary of $75,000 per annum.
Total wages bill equals $11,250,000 per annum.
Industry average workerâs compensation premium for their sector is 3.8860% of payroll.
Therefore their workerâs compensation premium should have been $437,175 per annum.
The really interesting piece here from a HSE perspective, is concurrent with their sustainability program, Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses have achieved significant improvements in their safety performance, such that their workerâs compensation premium is 1.8394% of their payroll â almost half the industry average!
Therefore their estimated workers compensation premium is in fact $206,932 per annum.
This equates to an estimated saving of $230,243 per annum.
As Craig points out, this is on top of all the financial returns from their other sustainability initiatives documented in the article.
This company is no stranger to those of you working in sustainability. Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses clearly have the ingredients for success as a sustainable business, taking the principles of sustainable development and mixing them into their every day work.

The technology could save ethanol plants 40% on energy costs and natural gas processors 35% of operating costs. Vaperma has secured government funding and will demonstrate its technology at commercial ethanol facilities in 2005-2006 before seeking further funding to scale up manufacturing.

The process uses an Activator polymer to aggregate fine particles, Anchor particles coated with a Tether polymer to bind the aggregates, and produces clean water that can be recycled along with dewatered solids suitable for reclamation. This specialized polymer technology eliminates tailings impoundments while recovering water and treating existing impoundment areas to mitigate environmental liability.
Green Box
Green Box has developed technologies to process food contaminated post-consumer waste from fast food and other waste streams. This transforms the waste into high quality tissue pulps, paper cups containing up to 40% post-consumer waste approved by the FDA, tissue products, diesel fuel, biochar, and fuel pellets. The process has zero waste water discharge or landfill waste, and fully reclaims and sustains the waste streams.
Precision Hawk
PrecisionHawk creates an end-to-end aerial data collection system utilizing artificial intelligence to operate an unmanned aerial vehicle and sensors. Their small, hand-launched drone can collect high resolution imagery and data autonomously for applications such as land surveying, agriculture, and security. Through AI, PrecisionHawk is able to automate data collection, processing, and analysis to provide on-demand business intelligence for customers.
Bio Toilets
The document discusses bio-toilets developed by DRDO in India as a solution to poor sanitation. Over 600 million people in India lack access to toilets and defecate openly, risking health and contaminating water sources. For every bottle purchased, a tree is planted, offsetting American trash and allowing consumers to track their tree's planting through an app. The product aims to accelerate global change through easy consumer participation in sustainability.
Altranex, The Future of Fuel
Altranex develops bio-lubricants and transportation fuels from renewable sources like plants that have absorbed CO2 from the atmosphere. Their fuels are designed to be compatible with existing fuel infrastructure and be indistinguishable from petroleum-based fuels. Specifically, their shipping fuel Altra-HFTM is made from renewable feedstocks like various plant oils and animal fats, is CO2 neutral, and contains almost no sulfur, meeting upcoming IMO regulations. By 2020, Altranex plans to license almost 30 production facilities around the world each producing renewable products like Altra-HFTM.
Open ROV
OpenROV is an open-source underwater robot and growing community of over 3,000 DIY ocean explorers that began in a garage. The community develops low-cost designs and new sensors to improve the robot and build a network of operators. It aims to democratize exploration by relying on community feedback to improve the crowdsourced design. Assembly takes a weekend and doesn't require expertise, just basic skills like soldering. Users can then explore oceans and share adventures with their OpenROV.
Powerless Skimmer
Creative Green Ideas is developing debris skimmers that require no power or moving parts to remove floating debris from waterways. Their skimmers can be used for oil spills, harvesting plants and plastics, providing cost savings. The goal is to make effective cleanup tools simple and affordable worldwide. Unlike motorized skimmers, it uses water flow to push debris down and let it rise, separating debris from water without extra equipment.
Rapid Sensor Data Modeling
Iterati Technologies proposes using artificial intelligence to model sensor data streams from oceanographic buoys. Their system would automatically highlight potentially problematic measurements or areas of interest, speeding up research. It aims to continuously refine models while correcting individual sensor biases. By rapidly modeling large amounts of sensor data and detecting anomalies, the system could also enable short-term prediction, systematic sensor correction, and merging of disparate data sources into single predictions.
Accelerated Sedimentation
The document summarizes a stormwater treatment system called the WTS2000 from Aqualete Industries that uses accelerated sedimentation technology. It removes pollutants like silt, sand, oil, grease, and nutrients from stormwater runoff more quickly and cost effectively than other systems. Crude Oil Desulferization
Genoil has developed a hydroconversion upgrading technology that removes impurities like sulfur, nitrogen, and metals from crude oil and refinery residues through a process that adds hydrogen. This technology reduces the carbon ratio in crude oil, making it a carbon reduction process. It can upgrade all types of heavy oil reserves globally. By removing these impurities which become greenhouse gases when burned, the technology tackles the challenge of meeting energy needs while reducing environmental impacts from oil consumption.
Ecopost
EcoPost is a company located in Kenya that manufactures plastic lumber from recycled plastic waste and sawdust. It employs people in marginalized areas to collect, sort, and provide plastic waste for manufacturing. EcoPost has created over 500 jobs, recycled over 2 million kilograms of waste, manufactured over 30,000 building profiles to provide housing while saving forests. Their products provide a sustainable alternative to timber for construction in impoverished areas of Africa.
FastOX Gasification
This technology converts waste into energy through an efficient gasification process. The FastOx gasifier uses a simple, proven design to convert a wide variety of waste streams into syngas, inert stone, and recovered metals on a large scale. By injecting oxygen and steam into the bottom of the gasifier, it produces an energy-dense syngas. This gasification technology is also uniquely scalable, able to process from 5 to 30,000 tons of waste per day in a single unit.
Green Box
The Green Box waste reclamation facilities can fully recover various waste streams currently sent to landfills through a process that has primarily water vapor air emissions and no effluent or landfill requirements. The process transforms food contaminated post-consumer waste into products like tissue paper, paper cups containing up to 40% post-consumer waste approved by the FDA, diesel fuel, biochar fertilizer, and fuel pellets. Hydroplant (tm) System
The HydroPlantTM system uses an onboard electrolysis system to split water into hydrogen and oxygen gases and safely introduce them into the air intake of diesel engines. This improves fuel efficiency by up to 20% and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70% without needing high-pressure hydrogen storage. The system offers constant monitoring and can be retrofitted to standard vehicle engines to provide fuel savings and emissions reductions for industries like trucking, shipping, construction, and agriculture.

This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power gridâs behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
