This document summarizes Ecclesiastes 7:15-29 from a sermon by Dr. Rick Griffith. It contains 3 main points:
1. Wisdom is balanced, avoiding extremes of righteousness and sinfulness.
2. Wisdom is strong, avoiding weakness from being blind to one's own faults.
3. Wisdom is insightful, avoiding thinking one has all the answers but still showing insight. It notes wisdom is difficult to attain and that while people were created to be virtuous, they tend toward wickedness.

God tells us that we should not repay evil with evil, not only do not do this, but also to win evil, with goodness. This is really beyond human thought. But from the discussion of the scriptures below, we can know why God wants us to do this? If we do not do that, our hearts will be severely polluted, and we cannot accept God's things. Not only can we not bear the blessing of God, but we also have curse on three generations of children and grandchildren. The consideration is to be able to climb the kingdom of God and give us eternal blessings at the same time. A347

We have finally come to our eternal home in the last two chapters of the Bible. What a way to end! Revelation places the 1000-year rule of the saints after Christ's return in chapter 19, seen in the normal, chronological sense as following the return of Jesus to the earth. Not just anyone qualifies to judge the world. For one, you have to be Creator. Secondly, you need to have given the world the chance to be saved. Are you "hot" or "cold" for Christ? He prefers one or the other. What he can't stand is the "lukewarm" Christian. Such a person won't lose his salvation, but he could lose his ministry, his privileges and even his physical life! This often happens to wealthy believers who trust themselves, as happened to the rich church at Laodicea. Hear the warning. Better yet, heed it.
"Philadelphia" means city of "Brotherly Love." What could be more brotherly than telling prospective brothers about God's great love? Jesus commended this church for maintaining their missions focus, despite being mistreated. He also promised them deliverance from God's anger at the entire world (3:10), also known as the Pre-Tribulational Rapture.
Is Jesus ever impressed with our wealth? That's not a question many of us ever seem to ask! It's one of the most vital issues that rich Christians should address, though. He wants us spiritually alive instead of financially aloof.
Unfortunately, at times even a church can condone sexual immorality. It happens every day now as churches redefine and explain away God's definition of marriage. In his letter to the church of Thyatira, Jesus tells us how seriously he views us calling sin simply "alternative" or "acceptable" or "tolerant" views. In particular, pornography is destroying nations.
Revelation 2:12-17 Pergamum—Compromising Yet ContinuingDr. Rick Griffith
When Christians compromise their faith, do they then leave the church? Sometimes, but often not. Jesus rebuked this church for going through the motions while still allowing immorality and heresy within.
What encouragement would Jesus give to suffering Christians? He already did it in the letter to Smyrna. This church remained steadfast under persecution and serves as a great example to believers today.
Revelation 2:1-7 Ephesus-Learning to Love Again (Lewis Winkler)Dr. Rick Griffith
Paul encouraged the Ephesians to love in unity, but unfortunately that love waned in the 30 years following. How can we rekindle our love for Christ and each other? Jesus tells us in this important letter from Christ himself.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Renewed in Grace
The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.
7. Wisdom is Practical
"Biblical wisdom includes the art
of being skillful and successful
in one's relationships and
responsibilities in life… An
individual is 'successful' as he
directs his life in accord with
God's divine design, His plans
for the world."
Roy B. Zuck, A Biblical
Theology of the OT, 213
14. I. Wisdom is balanced:
Avoid the extremes of depending on
righteousness and living in sin (7:15-18).
15. The Wicked & Godly
The house of the wicked will be destroyed,
but the tent of the godly will flourish
(Prov. 14:11 NLT)
Those who fear the LORD are secure;
he will be a refuge for their children
(Prov. 14:26 NLT)
16. "I have seen everything in this
meaningless life, including the
death of good young people and
the long life of wicked people."
Eccl. 7:15 NLT
21. "So don't be too good or too wise!
Why destroy yourself?" (7:16 NLT).
"Here comes Mr. 'holier-than-thou.'"
"Though almost universally
interpreted [translated] in the
sense of "destroy [NIV] or ruin
[NASB] oneself,' the verb in this
form never means this elsewhere.
Instead it means 'to be appalled or
astounded' (cf. Dan. 8:27,
'appalled'; Ps. 143:4, 'dismayed')"
(Glenn, BKC, 994).
23. "On the other hand, don't be
too wicked either. Don't be a fool!
Why die before your time?"
(7:17 NLT).
24. "So don't be
too good or
too wise!
Why astound
yourself?"
(7:16).
"On the other hand,
don't be too wicked
either. Don't be a
fool! Why die before
your time?"
(7:17 NLT).
"Pay attention to these instructions,
for anyone who fears God will avoid
both extremes" (7:18 NLT).
25. I. Wisdom is balanced:
Avoid the extremes of depending on
righteousness and living in sin (7:15-18).
26. II. Wisdom is strong:
Avoid the weakness from blindness to
your own faults (7:19-22).
27. "One wise person is stronger than ten
leading citizens of a town!" (7:19 NLT).
One
wise
person
>
28. Wisdom
avoids
perfectionism:
"Not a single
person on
earth is
always good
and never
sins" (7:20).
Wisdom gives strength to see our
weaknesses (7:20-22 NLT).
Wisdom handles
criticism without
judging:
"Don't eavesdrop on
others—you may hear
your servant curse you.
22For you know how
often you yourself have
cursed others" (7:21-22).
29. I. Wisdom is balanced:
Avoid the extremes of depending on
righteousness and living in sin (7:15-18).
30. II. Wisdom is strong:
Avoid the weakness from blindness to
your own faults (7:19-22).
31. III. Wisdom is insightful:
Avoid thinking you have all the answers
but still show insight (7:23-29).
32. "I have always tried my best to let
wisdom guide my thoughts and actions.
I said to myself, 'I am determined to be
wise.' But it didn't work. 24Wisdom is
always distant and difficult to find (7:23-
24 NLT).
"I tested all this with wisdom, and I said,
'I will be wise,' but it was far from me.
24What has been is remote and
exceedingly mysterious. Who can
discover it?" (7:23-24 NAU).
33. I searched everywhere, determined to
find wisdom and to understand the
reason for things. I was determined to
prove to myself that wickedness is
stupid and that foolishness is madness"
(7:25 NLT).
I directed my mind to know, to
investigate and to seek wisdom and an
explanation, and to know the evil of folly
and the foolishness of madness"
(7:25 NAU).
34. "I discovered that a
seductive woman is a trap
more bitter than death.
Her passion is a snare,
and her soft hands are
chains. Those who are
pleasing to God will
escape her, but sinners
will be caught in her
snare" (7:26 NLT).
36. "'This is my conclusion,' says the
Teacher. 'I discovered this after looking
at the matter from every possible angle.
28Though I have searched repeatedly, I
have not found what I was looking for.
Only one out of a thousand men is
virtuous, but not one woman! 29But I did
find this: God created people to be
virtuous, but they have each turned to
follow their own downward path"
(7:27-29 NLT).
37. "Only one out of a thousand men is
virtuous, but not one woman"!?!?!?!
Solomon looked at a thousand people and
found one man and no women (NAU)?
Solomon found one upright man and no
upright women in a thousand (NIV)?
Solomon found only one man in a thousand
who could answer his questions and no
women who could provide him fulfillment
(Swindoll, LOTRE Study Guide, 73).
38. "Only one out of a thousand men is
virtuous, but not one woman"!?!?!?!
Solomon found one in a thousand wise men
but not a single wise woman in his harem of
one thousand pagan wives and concubines
(cf. 1 Kings 11:1-11)?
Solomon isn't comparing men and women at
all but only drawing a complementary
parallelism.
39. "Only one out of a thousand men is
virtuous, but not one woman"!?!?!?!
The word here is not the normal word ish for
"man/husband" but it's adam, generic for
"man[kind]." So one human being in a
thousand is truly wise (7:28b).
The climax of the point is that "such people—
both men and women—are not only scarce
but are nonexistent… This is supported by the
fact that 'men' in Ecclesiastes 7:29 is 'they' in
Hebrew (i.e., both men and women)" (Glenn,
BKC, 1:996).
40. "'This is my conclusion,' says the
Teacher. 'I discovered this after looking
at the matter from every possible angle.
28Though I have searched repeatedly, I
have not found what I was looking for.
Only one out of a thousand men is
virtuous, but not one woman! 29But I did
find this: God created people to be
virtuous, but they have each turned to
follow their own downward path"
(7:27-29 NLT).
43. Questions
Balance: Is wisdom guarding me
from extremes?
Strength: Is wisdom keeping me
stable?
Insight: Is wisdom clearing my
mind to see reality?
(Swindoll, Living on the Ragged Edge Study Guide, 73).
44. "The ragged-edge question is not:
Will His wisdom work? But rather:
Are we putting His wisdom to work?"
(Swindoll, Living on the Ragged Edge, 218).
