THE SANCTUARY ARTICLES
AND ITS IMPORTANCE

“Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our
God?

There are many precious truths contained in the Word of
God, but it is "PRESENT TRUTH" that the flock needs now. I
have seen the danger of the messengers running off from
the important points of present truth, to dwell upon
subjects that are not calculated to unite the flock and
sanctify the soul. Satan will here take every possible
advantage to injure the cause. {EW 63.1} But such subjects
as the SANCTUARY, in connection with the 2300 days, the
commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, are perfectly
calculated to explain the past Advent movement and show
what our present position is, establish the faith of the
doubting, and give certainty to the glorious future. These, I
have frequently seen, were the principal subjects on which
the messengers should dwell. {EW 63.2}

“Christ was the foundation of the Jewish
economy. The system of types and
symbols was a compacted prophecy of the
gospel, a presentation in which were
bound up the promises of redemption”
{AA 14.1}
“In like manner the types which relate to the
second coming must be fulfilled at the time
pointed out in symbolic service” [GC 399.4]

The great plan of redemption, as revealed in the closing work of these
last days, should receive close examination. The scenes connected with
the sanctuary above should make such an impression upon the minds
and hearts of all that they may be able to impress others. All need to
become more intelligent in regard to the work of the atonement, which
is going on in the sanctuary above. When this grand truth is seen and
understood, those who hold it will work in harmony with Christ to
prepare a people to stand in the great day of God, and their efforts will
be successful. By study, contemplation, and prayer God's people will be
elevated above common, earthly thoughts and feelings, and will be
brought into harmony with Christ and His great work of cleansing the
sanctuary above from the sins of the people. Their faith will go with Him
into the sanctuary, and the worshipers on earth will be carefully
reviewing their lives and comparing their characters with the great
standard of righteousness. They will see their own defects; they will also
see that they must have the aid of the Spirit of God if they would become
qualified for the great and solemn work for this time which is laid upon
God's ambassadors. {5T 575.1}

Importance of the Sanctuary
Says the great deceiverthe great deceiver: “We must watch those
who are calling the attention of the people to the
Sabbath of Jehovah; they will lead many to see
the claims of the law of Godthe claims of the law of God; and the samesame
lightlight which reveals the true Sabbath, reveals also
the ministration of Christ in the heavenlythe ministration of Christ in the heavenly
sanctuarysanctuary, and shows that the last work for man’s
salvation is now going forward. Hold the minds of
the people in darkness till that work is ended, and
we shall secure the world and the church also. {4SP
337.2}

The subject of the sanctuary was the keythe key
which unlocked the mystery of the
disappointment of 1844. It opened to view a
complete system of truth, connected and
harmonious, showing that God's hand had directed
the great advent movement and revealing
present duty as it brought to light the position
and work of His people… Light from the
sanctuary illumined the past, the
present, and the future…{GC 423.1}

Who Took the Key
 Luke 11:52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye
have taken away the key of knowledge:
ye entered not in yourselves, and them
that were entering in ye hindered.
 Based on the experiences outlined in the
gospels the lawyers were the theology
teachers of the time. The “men of the
law.”

As with holy boldness Paul proclaimed the gospel in
the synagogue at Thessalonica, a flood of light was
thrown upon the true meaning of the rites and
ceremonies connected with the tabernacle service.
He carried the minds of his hearers beyond the
earthly service and the ministry of Christ in the
heavenly sanctuary, to the time when, having
completed His mediatorial work, Christ would come
again in power and great glory, and establish His
kingdom on the earth. {AA 228.3}

For three successive Sabbaths Paul preached
to the Thessalonians, reasoning with them from
the Scriptures regarding the life, death,
resurrection, office work, and future glory of
Christ, the "Lamb slain from the foundation of the
world." Rev 13:8. He exalted Christ, the proper
understanding of whose ministry is the key
that unlocks the Old Testament Scriptures,
giving access to their rich treasures. {AA 229.1}

Type and Antitype
 For the law was given by Moses, but
grace and truth came by
Jesus Christ. (John 1:17)
 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way,
the truth, and the life: no man
cometh unto the Father, but by me.
(John 14:6)

Type and Antitype
 Take this book of the law, and put it in
the side of the ark of the covenant of the
LORD your God, that it may be there for a
witness against thee. (Deuteronomy
31:26)
 Blotting out the handwriting of
ordinances that was against us, which was
contrary to us, and took it out of the way,
nailing it to his cross; (Colossians
2:14 )

A Pattern of Heavenly Things
Who serve unto the example and
shadow of heavenly things, as Moses
was admonished of God when he was about
to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith
he, that thou make all things according
to the pattern shewed to thee in the
mount. (Hebrews 8:5)

The Place of Understanding
 Psalms 119:27 Make me to understand the
way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy
wondrous works.
 Psalms 73:17 Until I went into the sanctuary
of God; then understood I their end.
 Psalms 77:13 Thy way, O God, is in the
sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?

Sanctuary
 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I
may dwell among them. (Exodus 25:8)
 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt
call his name JESUS: for he shall save his
people from their sins. Now all this was done,
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of
the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin
shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son,
and they shall call his name Emmanuel,
which being interpreted is, God with us.

Why a Sanctuary
What? know ye not that your body is the
temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you,
which ye have of God, and ye are not your
own? (1 Corinthians 6:19)
From eternal ages it was God's purpose that
every created being, from the bright and holy
seraph to man, should be a temple for the
indwelling of the Creator. Because of
sin, humanity ceased to be a temple for
God. {DA 161.1}

Altar of Sacrifice
Exodus 27:1-2 And thou shalt make an altar
of shittim wood, five cubits long, and five
cubits broad; the altar shall be foursquare:
and the height thereof shall be three cubits.
And thou shalt make the horns of it upon
the four corners thereof: his horns shall be
of the same: and thou shalt overlay it with
brass.

Altar
Hebrews 13:10-12 We have an altar, whereof
they have no right to eat which serve the
tabernacle. For the bodies of those beasts,
whose blood is brought into the sanctuary
by the high priest for sin, are burned without the
camp. Wherefore Jesus also, that he might
sanctify the people with his own blood,
suffered without the gate.

Altar
Romans 12:1 I beseech you
therefore, brethren, by the mercies
of God, that ye present your bodies a
living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto
God, which is your reasonable
service.
Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our
old man is crucified with him, that
the body of sin might be destroyed,

The Laver
Exodus 38:8 And he
made the laver of
brass, and the foot of it
of brass, of the

Placement of Laver

laver between the tent of the

The Porch
 2 Chronicles 3:4 And the porch that was in the
front of the house, the length of it was according
to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and
the height was an hundred and twenty: and he
overlaid it within with pure gold.
 2 Chronicles 29:7 Also they have shut up the
doors of the porch, and put out the lamps,
and have not burned incense nor offered burnt
offerings in the holy place unto the God of Israel.

Place of Weeping
Joel 2:17 Let the priests, the ministers of
the LORD, weep between the porch
and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy
people, O LORD, and give not thine
heritage to reproach, that the heathen
should rule over them: wherefore should
they say among the people, Where is their
God?

Newness of Life
 Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this
world: but be ye transformed by the
renewing of your mind, that ye may prove
what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect,
will of God.

by baptism into death: that like as Christ was
raised up from the dead by the glory of the

The Holy and Most Holy
Exodus 26:33-35 And thou shalt hang up the vail
under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither
within the vail the ark of the testimony: and the
vail shall divide unto you between the holy
place and the most holy. And thou shalt put
the mercy seat upon the ark of the
testimony in the most holy place. And thou
shalt set the table without the vail, and the
candlestick over against the table on the side of
the tabernacle toward the south: and thou shalt
put the table on the north side.

The Table
• Exodus 25:23-24 Thou shalt also make a table of
shittim wood: two cubits shall be the length
thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a
cubit and a half the height thereof. And thou shalt
overlay it with pure gold, and make thereto a
crown of gold round about.

The “Work” of Sabbath
• 1 Samuel 21:6 So the priest gave
him hallowed bread: for there was
no bread there but the
shewbread, that was taken from
before the LORD, to put hot bread
in the day when it was taken
away.

The “Work” of Sabbath
 1 Chronicles 9:32 And other of their
brethren, of the sons of the Kohathites,
were over the shewbread, to prepare it
every sabbath.

law, how that on the sabbath days the
priests in the temple profane the
sabbath, and are blameless?

The Bread of Life
 John 6:51 I am the living bread which came
down from heaven: if any man eat of this
bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread
that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for
the life of the world.
 Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is
written, Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceedeth out
of the mouth of God.

The Bread of Life

Water and Wine

The Communion

took the cup, and when he had given

This is my blood of the new
testament, which is shed for many.

The Communion
 And when he had given thanks, he brake it,
and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which
is broken for you: this do in
remembrance of me. After the
same manner also he took the cup, when
he had supped, saying, This cup is the new
testament in my blood: this do ye, as
oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of
me. (1 Corinthians 11:24-25)

The Throne
Revelation 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the
midst of the throne and of the four beasts,
and in the midst of the elders, stood a
Lamb as it had been slain, having seven
horns and seven eyes, which are the seven
Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
And he came and took the book out of the
right hand of him that sat upon the throne.

Candlesticks
Exodus 25:31 And thou

The Oil
 And thou shalt command the children of
Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive
beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to
burn always. (Exodus 27:20)
 And two olive trees by it, one upon the right
side of the bowl, and the other upon the left
side thereof. This is the word of the LORD
unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor
by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD
of hosts. (Zechariah 4:3, 6)

You Are the Light
 Matthew 5:14-16 Ye are the light of
the world. A city that is set on an hill
cannot be hid. Neither do men light a
candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a
candlestick; and it giveth light unto all
that are in the house. Let your light so
shine before men, that they may see your
good works, and glorify your Father
which is in heaven.

How We Become Light
 Zechariah 4:2-3 And said unto me, What seest
thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a
candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of
it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to
the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:
And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of
the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.
 The Whole chapter is for deep study.
 Revelation 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and
the two candlesticks standing before the God of the
earth.

In Heaven
Revelation 1:12-13 And I turned to see the voice
that spake with me. And being turned, I saw
seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst
of the seven candlesticks one like unto the
Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the
foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

Altar of Incense
• Exodus 40:26-27 And he put
the golden altar in the
tent of the congregation
before the vail: And he
burnt sweet incense
thereon; as the LORD
commanded Moses.
• Revelation 5:8 golden
vials full of odours,
which are the prayers of
saints.

Christ Prayed
 Luke 6:12 And it came to pass in those days,
that he went out into a mountain to pray, and
continued all night in prayer to God.
 Luke 5:16 And he withdrew himself into the
wilderness, and prayed.
 Mark 1:35 And in the morning, rising up a
great while before day, he went out, and
departed into a solitary place, and there
prayed.

We Should Pray
 Psalms 141:2 Let my prayer be set forth before
thee as incense;
 Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our
infirmities: for we know not what we should
pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself
maketh intercession for us with groanings
which cannot be uttered.
 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.
 Romans 12:12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in
tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;

The Golden Altar
Revelation 8:3 And another
angel came and stood at
the altar, having a
golden censer; and there
was given unto him much
incense, that he should
offer it with the prayers
of all saints upon the
golden altar which was
before the throne.

What the Prophet Saw
He quickly carried me from the earth to the Holy
City. In the city I saw a temple, which I
entered. I passed through a door before I came
to the first veil. This veil was raised, and I
passed into the holy place. Here I saw the
altar of incense, the candlestick with
seven lamps, and the table on which was
the shewbread. After viewing the glory of the
holy, Jesus raised the second veil and I
passed into the holy of holies. {EW 32.2}

Significance of the Holy Place
• Signifies the Christian life
• The process of Sanctification
• Hebrews 2:11 For both he that sanctifieth and
they who are sanctified are all of one: for which
cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
• Through reading the word, praying and partaking
of the Holy Spirit
• We should also pray for others, teach the word
and live lives that reflect the light of Christ

The Most Holy Place
Hebrews 9:3-5 And after the second veil, the
tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;
Which had the golden censer, and the
ark of the covenant overlaid round about
with gold, wherein was the golden pot
that had manna, and Aaron's rod that
budded, and the tables of the covenant;
And over it the cherubims of glory
shadowing the mercyseat; of which we
cannot now speak particularly.

The Golden Censer
Leviticus 16:12 And he shall take a
censer full of burning coals of
fire from off the altar before the
LORD, and his hands full of
sweet incense beaten small, and
bring it within the vail: And he shall
put the incense upon the fire
before the LORD, that the cloud
of the incense may cover the
mercy seat that is upon the
testimony, that he die not:

The Mercy Seat
• Exodus 26:34 And thou shalt put the mercy seat
upon the ark of the testimony in the most
holy place.
• Exodus 25:19-20 And make one cherub on the
one end, and the other cherub on the other
end: even of the mercy seat shall ye make the
cherubims on the two ends thereof. And the
cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high,
covering the mercy seat with their wings, and
their faces shall look one to another; toward the
mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be.

Between The Cherubims
• Psalms 99:1 The LORD reigneth; let the people
tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims

The Ark of the Covenant
Deuteronomy 10:4 And he wrote on the
tables, according to the first writing, the ten

unto you in the mount out of the midst of the
fire in the day of the assembly: and the LORD
gave them unto me. And I turned myself and
came down from the mount, and put the
tables in the ark which I had made; and
there they be, as the LORD commanded me.

The Ark of the Covenant
• Revelation 11:19 And the temple of God
was opened in heaven, and there was
seen in his temple the ark of his
testament: and there were lightnings, and
voices, and thunderings, and an
earthquake, and great hail.

Inside the Ark
• Exodus 32:15 And Moses turned, and went
down from the mount, and the two tables
of the testimony were in his hand: the
tables were written on both their sides; on
the one side and on the other were they
written.

Inside the Ark
• Exodus 16:33 And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a
pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and
lay it up before the LORD, to be kept for your
generations.
• Numbers 17:10 And the LORD said unto Moses,
Bring Aaron's rod again before the
testimony, to be kept for a token against the
rebels; and thou shalt quite take away their
murmurings from me, that they die not.

Another Witness
In the holiest I saw an ark; on the top
and sides of it was purest gold. On each
end of the ark was a lovely cherub,
with its wings spread out over it. Their faces
were turned toward each other, and they
looked downward. Between the angels
was a golden censer. Above the ark,
where the angels stood, was an exceeding
bright glory, that appeared like a throne
where God dwelt. {EW 32.3}

Another Witness
Jesus stood by the ark, and as the saints’
prayers came up to Him, the incense in
the censer would smoke, and He would
offer up their prayers with the smoke of the
incense to His Father. In the ark was the
golden pot of manna, Aaron’s rod that
budded, and the tables of stone which
folded together like a book. {EW 32.3}

The Pot of Manna
 Exodus 16:15 And when the children of Israel saw
it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they
wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them,
This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to
eat.
 John 6:48 I am that bread of life. Your fathers did
eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is
the bread which cometh down from heaven, that
a man may eat thereof, and not die.
 Note Deuteronomy 8:1-3 for the object lesson that
God was trying to teach in the provision of manna

Manna = Grains
 Psalms 78:24 And had rained down manna
upon them to eat, and had given them of
the corn of heaven.
 Mark 2:23 And it came to pass, that he
went through the corn fields on the
sabbath day; and his disciples began, as
they went, to pluck the ears of corn.
 Corn and other foods from the grass family
are referred to as grains and cereals

Aaron’s Rod = The Chosen Priest
• And it shall come to pass, that the man's rod,
whom I shall choose, shall blossom: and I will
make to cease from me the murmurings of the
children of Israel, whereby they murmur against
you. (Numbers 17:5)
• (For those priests were made without an oath; but
this with an oath by him that said unto him, The
Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest
for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) By so
much was Jesus made a surety of a better
testament. (Hebrews 7:21)

Almond = Fruit and Nut
• Numbers 17:8 And it came to pass, that on the
morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of
witness; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the
house of Levi was budded, and brought forth
buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded
almonds.
• The seed of the almond is one of the most
potent nuts. The fleshy outer coat can be
eaten as fruit. Both can be eaten raw.

Giving Glory
 Revelation 14:7 Fear God, and give glory to him
 Ecclesiastes 12:13 Fear God, and keep his
commandments:
 1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat,
or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the
glory of God.
 The message of temperance is thus directly
linked to the commandments

Humanity
 Exodus 34:29 And it came to pass,
when Moses came down from mount
Sinai with the two tables of testimony
in Moses' hand, when he came down
from the mount, that Moses wist not
that the skin of his face shone while
he talked with him.

Humanity
 Matthew 17:2 And was transfigured
before them: and his face did shine as the
sun, and his raiment was white as the
light.
 Acts 6:15 And all that sat in the council,
looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as
it had been the face of an angel.

The Place of Glorification
 Colossians 1:11 Strengthened with all
might, according to his glorious power,
unto all patience and longsuffering with
joyfulness;
 Romans 8:30 Moreover whom he did
predestinate, them he also called: and
whom he called, them he also justified:
and whom he justified, them he also
glorified.

Earth Filled with God’s Glory
 Isaiah 60:2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover
the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the
LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory
shall be seen upon thee.
 Numbers 14:21 But as truly as I live, all the
earth shall be filled with the glory of the
LORD.
 Revelation 18:1 And after these things I saw
another angel come down from heaven, having
great power; and the earth was lightened
with his glory.
 Isaiah 60:2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover
the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the
LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory
shall be seen upon thee.

Those Who Remain
I looked upon the company, who, a short
time before, were in such distress and
bondage. Their captivity was turned. A
glorious light shone upon them. How
beautiful they then looked! All marks of care
and weariness were gone, and health and
beauty were seen in every countenance. {EW

Christ’s Focus
Ever before Him, Christ saw the result of
His mission. His earthly life, so full of toil
and self-sacrifice, was cheered by the thought
that He would not have all this travail for
nought. By giving His life for the life of men,
He would restore in humanity the image
of God. He would lift us up from the dust,
reshape the character after the pattern of
His own character, and make it beautiful
with His own glory. {MH 504.2}
Ever before Him, Christ saw the result of
His mission. His earthly life, so full of toil
and self-sacrifice, was cheered by the thought
that He would not have all this travail for
nought. By giving His life for the life of men,
He would restore in humanity the image
of God. He would lift us up from the dust,
reshape the character after the pattern of
His own character, and make it beautiful
