The document discusses the Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) initiative and the Sensor Interface Descriptor (SID) concept. There is currently a gap between low-level sensor protocols and the higher-level SWE standards. SIDs aim to bridge this gap by allowing sensor protocols to be declaratively described. This would enable sensors to be more easily integrated into the Sensor Web. The SID model extends existing SensorML schemas and defines elements for describing sensor communication protocols, commands, processing steps and metadata mapping in an interoperable way. An implementation of a SID interpreter is also discussed which could translate between sensor protocols and SWE protocols based on SID descriptions.
