Henry Fleming s character changed several times throughout The Red Badge of Courage. These
changes showed how Henry became a man and how he gained the confidence and courage required
to be a soldier. In Chapter 1, Henry is completely engaged in his own thoughts. He daydreams about
his farm, his home, and the conversation he had with his mother. This shows that, at the beginning
of the novel, Henry is excited and has unrealistic ideas of glory. He is a dreamer. He doesn t think
of death, especially not the possibility of his own death. In Chapter 2, Henry starts to connect with
the other soldiers in his regiment. He listens to the soldiers talking the enemyand the coming battle.

While James Baldwin s short story Sonny s Blues depicts the connection between two brothers,
Tillie Olsen s short story I Stand Here Ironing represents the bond between a mother and her
daughter. Both Baldwin and Olsen focus on family relationships and how emotional support vs
neglect have an effect on familymembers. Also, each author conveys a message of finding self
identity even amidst adversity, while including the symbolism of everyday objects. Furthermore,

While Sonny was physically locked up in jail for his addiction to drugs, his older brother was
confined to the racism in Harlem and unable to express his emotions towards his brother until his
daughter passed away. It s ironic that they were imprisoned in opposite ways. While the narrator
never got addicted to drugs like most of the men in the community, Sonny got to escape Harlem and
create a new life. Until the brothers shared a drink at the end of the story, they hadn t found
salivation from their self imprisonment. On the other hand, in I Stand Here Ironing it was almost as
if the iron was the mother s imprisonment. The narrator was trapped by the daily tasks she had to
perform to effectively care for her family, but ironically it was these chores that weakened her

Crash Vs Logan
While Crash from Crash and Logan from Closed for the Season both are determined, they both
differ because Crash is mingy and Logan is superior. In both books the main characters are
stubborn to achieve their goals, no matter what comes in their way. However Crash proves
himself to be penurious thought the book. Logan s kindness is noticeable though his dialogue
when he is with his friend, Arthur. Characterization plays an important role in the reader s

To prove that logan is strong willed, in the book it states, After a half hour of steady uphill

One reason to prove that Logan is pleasant is because in the book it states, Bear tried to charge
through the excited protesters, but they did not make way fast enough. Arthur and I managed
to grab his collar and stop him. This shows that logan is copacetic because he was trying to stop
a ferocious dog from going into a crowd and hurting people. Logan cares about what other people
feel, unlike Crash. Another reason to prove that Logan is polite is because, in the book it states,
Great, I said. That s really great. A little weird, I thought but definitely interesting. This
demoststres that Logan is pleasant because he keeps all of his rude comments to himself. He
does not want other people to feel bad. If it was Crash than he would have said anything he
wanted to say and would not care about about what the other person felt. The last reason to prove
that Logan is peachy is because in the book it states, I had enough to buy one rootbeer. I gave it
to Arthur because he looked more tired than me. This illustrates that logan is well mannered
because he offers a soda to his friend even though he payed for the soda. He is showing a act of
