The Natchez District where a tribe of Indians were housed as slaves was the first Mississippi
region where plantations were established. There African slaves were introduced into the Natchez
plantation system in the early 1700s by the French colonists where the first major profitable crop
that thrived from African slave labor in Natchez was tobacco products. The slaves shipped here
came with a militant spirit after being harbored amongst the torturous vessels. Their aggression, at
first took the form of resistance on slave ships as many deckhands and captive slaves experienced
the unforgiving waters, this is again explained in the novel Saltwater Slaverywritten by Smallwood.
One of the earliest recorded incidents of a slave resistance was the Natchez Indian Revolt of 1729
against the French colonists. The African arrival in Natchez did not quell this militancy. Instead it

America. With this rise in popularity, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and its
colleges have also seen a rise in revenue in recent years. In 2014, the NCAA made over 900
million dollars in revenue. Some collegiate coaches, such as Kentucky s John Calipari, have yearly
salaries in the millions, not counting incentives and endorsement deals. While, clearly, moneyis
being made, NCAA regulations ban collegiate athletes from being paid. Many question this rule and
argue that athletes at the college level earn and deserve pay for play. The debate to pay or not to
pay college athletes rages on despite the latest court ruling supporting NCAA policies. Because
colleges and universities earn such a profit from sporting events, many fans feel it is only fair to
distribute some of the wealth to the players. Supporters of paying student athletes feel that these
young men and women should be fairly compensated for the time demanded of the athletes and the
stress put on the athletes, physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially. Those in favor of

Why? Try saying it or try writing it. I had a problem with both. The fear of long words is
Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia/ Sesquipedalophobia. If that isn t a mouthful I don t
know what is. If you haven t been discouraged to know more this awful word has 35 letters in it.
It comes from the root word sesquipedalian long word and the words hippopotamus and monsters
have been added to make it really seem terrible. This phobia is thought to stem from frightening
experiences with vocabulary or spelling bees during childhood and the difficulty to memorize
or mentally process multisyllabic words. It is suggested that perhaps people who have come to
rely on modern technology and have stopped reading might in some form develop this phobia.
Now that alone is a scary thought. That is why I am still friends with all of my books and I
know that nothing can replace the feel and smell of a real book in my hand. Just knowing about
this phobia I will continue to read the old fashioned way. I remember an incident in school when
I was faced with having to spell the word Mississippi. All of those double letters resulted in a bad
