2. The Photo Sequence
• Overall shots to set the scene
• Medium shots to tell the story
• Closeups and details to add drama
• Shoot all of the above—but especially medium
shots—from a variety of angles

3. Go for the Candids
• Catch your subject(s) as unaware as possible.
• In shooting for an audio slideshow, your subject will
know you are present
• Talk as much as you need to (gather audio?) to
get the subject comfortable with your presence
• Fade into the background as much as possible
• Be patient—let subject get tired of “posing”

4. Light!
• Use natural lighting as much as possible
• Built-in flash in point-and-shoot cameras is
especially problematic (except for fill-flash!)
• Rest your camera on a flat surface in low light
situations—or use a tripod
• As a rule, light faces from the side
• Shoot early in the a.m. or late in the evening before
the sun goes down for beautiful light
• Seek out shade between 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

5. Framing the Pic
• Move in close!
• Pay attention to backgrounds
• Keep your hands steady
• Use the rule of thirds for framing and cropping

6. On your camera, you need to know how
to…
• Set the ISO
• 100-200, strong daylight; 400-800, low light
• Select Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority
• Aperture for depth of field, shutter for action
• Force your built-in flash off and on
• Off in low, natural light; on with backlighting
• Correctly use your automatic focus feature
