What is Personal Development?
As stated by a teacher:
Personal development is when you decide what
skills you want to learn and professional
development is when others tell you what they
need you to improve.
Personal Development
Personal Development
• Professional development focuses on technical
skills such as, pedagogy (the skill of teaching),
teaching strategies/techniques and lesson plans
• Personal development focuses on personal skills
such as self- understanding (awareness), well
managed emotions, proper self-care and healthy
relationships
• Factors of personal development such as a
teacher’s personality can impact management of
student behaviour in the classroom
environment.
Personal Development
• Professional objectives represent “what you do
in the classroom”
• Personal objectives represent how you, the
teacher conduct yourself in the classroom as you
deliver your professional objectives

When asked the role of what a good teacher
was, one person replied:
“ As a teacher I am a policeman, sergeant major,
counsellor, aunt, step-parent, advisor, nanny,
technician, nurse, judge, leader, nursemaid and
educator”
Teachers like other professions have to deal with
life changing events such as, pregnancy, birth of
children, divorce, separation, death of family
and friends, challenging relationships, financial
difficulties, illness and sickness in family
members
