- Back in 2010 you hired an optimist. I saw the condos begging for sale on the riverfront and several housing projects that had come to a halt. I saw the surfers, the kite boarders and the families out walking the lakefront trail. I saw – and tasted – the restaurants, coffee shops and bought things at the retail shops. …and I swam in Lake Michigan. I saw the family-owned businesses making plans to grow. I saw the school administrators working hard to meet the needs of their students and helping them build futures. All of this while our county was still in the throes of the recession. I knew it would all come back to life…and then some. We have resources here that others can only dream about. Well I say, LOOK AT US NOW. Just five years later and we are talking about recruiting and retaining a talented workforce to fill 1200 open jobs. We’re talking about building housing and revitalizing downtowns. In fact just about everyone I speak with is involved in something that is going to make a big difference here in Sheboygan County. Today I come with good news. In our annual survey this year you told us that things are clearly better. That for most of your businesses and organizations, things are looking up and getting better each year. The uncertainty that seemed to pervade the air waves two years ago seems to have receded. So, let’s get started. We have conducted this survey for four years now so I’ve got some comparative information for you too. With 288 responses we can have some amount of confidence in these numbers but you know what they say about data…
- Top issue: Talent recruiting & retention.
- I don’t know about you but I have fairly decent insurance and I still dread opening the bill for a doctor’s visit.
- Good times change things. With 1200 job openings in Sheboygan County we now find Talent Recruitment at the top of the list. In 2013 and 2012 economic slowdown was first, followed by healthcare costs and taxes. Now healthcare cost is second to Talent Recruitment and competition is third. Taxes fell to 7th on the list. In 2014 in the retail and hospitality sectors first on the list was taxes, followed by healthcare costs and competition with talent recruitment being 4th.
- Increase in sales continues to climb (up to 69%) but decreasing sales increased as well, coming in at 16% compared to 10% reporting decreases in 2013. Interestingly in the non-profit charitable sector there was also an increase in sales (donations in this case) in 57% of the organizations, while 23% saw a decrease.
- 84% believe there will be growth, and 12% predict a flat economy, less than 1% believe it will decline. In 2013: 67% growth and 30% flat. In 2012, 66% predicted growth and 32% saw a flat economy. So we are still on an upswing with a very optimistic outlook for our county as a whole.
