- Hi, my name is Sol Lee, and today I will be sharing a wonderful tool for educators called SlideShare. The title of my presentation is Share New Ideas on SlideShare. Specifically, I will be discussing its advantages and disadvantages.
- First, what is SlideShare? SlideShare is a website owned by LinkedIn. Just in case you aren’t sure what LinkedIn is, LinkedIn is a social networking site for professionals. It’s like Facebook for business people. So SlideShare is owned by LinkedIn. With SlideShare, anyone can share a presentation, document, or video online. And once you upload a presentation on SlideShare, anyone can access it. Currently SlideShare has 80 million users, so in other words 80 million people will be able to see your presentation.
- Now that everyone is knows what SlideShare is, we will begin by discussing the advantages of SlideShare. Although there are many advantages, the major advantage of SlideShare is the ability to share presentations online. Once the presentations are online, they could be used in classes where using a USB to transfer files is not possible. Or, it could also be used as a platform for students to review the things they learned in class.
- Another advantage of SlideShare is the ability to add other forms of media in presentations. The biggest benefit I believe is the ability to add YouTube videos. I’ve had many cases where I wanted to include a YouTube video in my presentation and things didn’t turn out well. Sometimes adding a video is the hardest thing in PowerPoint because you never know what can go wrong.
- Lastly, SlideShare is very, very, very easy to use. I think that’s the greatest reason that 80 million people are using it. Uploading a file is very simple. Once you login to the website, you just click Upload, then choose your file, and finish.
- We will now turn to the disadvantages of SlideShare. First, although SlideShare has a lot of content, it’s very difficult to find the content that you want unless you know exactly what you are looking for. If you knew I uploaded a presentation but did not know the exact title or how to search for it, you wouldn’t be able to find it. Another problem is that it’s difficult to find new content because most of the featured presentations are limited to a certain field like Artificial Intelligence. So anyone looking for new things to learn may find it difficult in SlideShare.
- Second, SlideShare does not support audio. What I mean is that presentations are normally presented by a person. A person explains each of the slides or uses slides as a means of support rather than to explain detailed things. Therefore, slides are normally not wordy. However, presentations in SlideShare needs to be wordy, because no one is there to explain it. The slides need to explain themselves, so it requires more words in each slide.
- Lastly and most importantly, the comments section in SlideShare is not monitored. When someone uploads a presentation to a website like SlideShare, they expect people to leave feedback. Any form of evaluation would be welcome. However, since SlideShare does not monitor their comments, its function is pretty much useless.
- This is the comments listed in one of the featured presentations. The comments are inappropriate for children, so it’s difficult to use this as a tool for students. Additionally, there is no helpful feedback for the uploader.
- Overall, the advantages of SlideShare are the ability to share content, the ability to add media, and its ease of use. Its disadvantages are the it’s hard to find content, there is no audio support, and no one is monitoring the comments section.
- For our activity, instead of explaining how SlideShare works, through a small exercise, I will show everyone how it works. First, on your computers, please open a web browser of your choice, and type in www.slideshare.net in the address bar. Once the website loads, please search for SlideShare: Share New Ideas, just like you see on the screen.
- And there it is! My slide is viewable by 80 million people.
