FORMATION OF SHADOWS
Science Presentation – Class 6
What is a Shadow?
• A shadow is a dark shape formed when an
object blocks light.
– Shadows are formed because light travels in a
straight line.
– We see shadows in our daily life.
How is a Shadow Formed?
• There must be a source of light.
– An opaque object blocks the light.
– A shadow appears on a screen or surface.
Things Needed to Form a Shadow
(Step 1)
• Light Source (Sun, candle, torch)
Things Needed to Form a Shadow
(Step 2)
• Opaque Object (book, ball, hand)
Things Needed to Form a Shadow
(Step 3)
• Screen or Wall
Types of Objects
• Opaque – Do not allow light to pass (clear
shadow)
– Translucent – Allow some light (faint shadow)
– Transparent – Allow all light (no shadow)
Size of a Shadow
• Closer object to light → Bigger shadow
– Farther object from light → Smaller shadow
– Shadow changes with position of light
Examples of Shadows
• Your shadow in sunlight
– Trees and buildings at evening
– Shadow puppets
Fun Activity
• Use a torch and your hand
– Make animal shapes on the wall
– Observe how the shadow changes
Conclusion
• Shadows are formed when light is blocked.
– Light source, object, and screen are needed.
– Shadows change with distance and position.
