- 11. An Penumbra When something gets in the path of the sun, it creates a shadow called the umbra, but it also makes a lighter shadow called the penumbra. In the picture of the Sun and a Moon, you can see that directly in front of the Moon is the umbra.
- 12. An Antumbra Antumbra. The antumbra (from Latin ante, "before") is the region from which the occluding body appears entirely within the disc of the light source. An observer in this region experiences an annular eclipse, in which a bright ring is visible around the eclipsing body.
