- I have a passion of helping animals and making sure that they know they are loved. My main reason for this topic is because of my 1 year old dog Tyson. I would hate to see anything happen to her, and its a shame that some dogs don&#x2019;t get the love and attention that my dog gets. i remember being bit by an american bull dog when I was seven years old. The dog was just scared, not viscous in any way. I just happened to be sitting down, petting the dog when it snapped. As a was sitting there, people cleaning my face up, the owners were apologizing and explaining that they were going to put the dog down. In this Q&A they were trying to get the results from a survey, that these researchers did, connecting animal abuse to domestic violence. In order to find this out they surveyed the largest shelters of battered women in 49 states. The results showed a clear connection between the two in most cases.\n\n-74% owned pets\n-71% of the 74% had partners who threatened or killed their pets\n\nAnother survey, during the year of 1995, was done in a women&#x2019;s shelter in Wisconsin.\n\n-72% of the women were victims of domestic violence\n-86% owned pets\n-80% of the 86% the pets were abused.\n\n

However, most of us are familiar with the two obvious ways of abuse, which are, neglect (passive cruelty) and physical (active cruelty). With physical abuse there is hitting, kicking and intentionally harming and animal, however, there is also the dog fighting and puppy mill aspect of animal cruelty, which some people don&#x2019;t even realize is even considered abuse.\n

This helps control the movement of the dog&#x2019;s head, neck, and nose when walking him/ or her around to go to the bathroom or get some air in a park.\nPinch/Prong Collars: This collar is good if the person using it doesn&#x2019;t have the strength to pull a dog back when the dog is trying to go after another animal because it takes little strength to handle a dog with this collar on. Also is does have limited constriction around the neck as well as an even distribution on pressure around the neck as well.\nShock Collars: Shock equipment is used mainly for the use of a barrier for a dog, such as, a fence. If somebody doesn&#x2019;t want to build a fence they will get an electric fence. It is also used to teach a dog to stop barking or stop jumping on people that walk through your home.\nSpray Training Product: These spray products are not harmful to the animal and are said to decrease the likelihood of an animal because abused or abandoned because the scent of the citronella help suppress unwanted behavior.\n

- Bree is a female Golden Retriever and one of the most calm and well-mannered dogs in the shelter. She does very well when it comes to interacting with other dogs, however, she can be a bit shy from time to time. Her estimated birthday is in the month of November in the year 2006 making her around the age of five years old. When Bree was a puppy she was rescued from a puppy mill and put into MLAR for her safety and so they would be able to train her and find her a home.\n

- For my class activity everyone will form a group of 3. Each group will get 1 dog collar and some puffy paint to decorate the dog collars. After everyone is finished place them in the back of the room to dry over night, and after they dry I am going to ship all of the collars to an nearby animal shelter for extra collar supplies.\n

- Animal abuse can happen right under your nose and sometimes you may not even realize its happening. Dog fighting is a way of life for some of these dogs, they have been fighting for their entire lives. Female dogs in puppy mills may never get a chance to live in a loving home, they only know the life of reproduction. However, some dogs, in shelters, still have a chance to find people that love them. Everyone can help these animals. Even just volunteering at an animal shelter has a huge impact on these animals because no matter how scared they may be, just sitting in their run with them lets them know that humans aren&#x2019;t all bad and somebody can care about them. You wouldn&#x2019;t believe the bond that you develop with some of the dogs, I never want to leave. Thank you for listening.\n
