3. I have a passion of helping animals and making sure that they know they are loved. My main reason for this topic is because of my 1 year old dog Tyson. I would hate to see anything happen to her, and its a shame that some dogs don’t get the love and attention that my dog gets. i remember being bit by an american bull dog when I was seven years old. The dog was just scared, not viscous in any way. I just happened to be sitting down, petting the dog when it snapped. As a was sitting there, people cleaning my face up, the owners were apologizing and explaining that they were going to put the dog down. At this point I hadn’t really cried, but hearing this made me cry hysterically because I knew the dog didn’t mean to do it, it was just a reaction. I was then that I realized the love I have for animals was definitely stronger than any wound they could have given me.\n

 9. Before getting into the main topic of animal abuse, i want to talk about the general types of abuse, which many of you may know. Physical abuse is when somebody uses force/violence to cause bodily harm/impairment to someone continually. The second form of abuse is sexual which is any form on non-consensual physical contact with somebody, especially when performing sexual acts with somebody who lacks the ability to give consent. Psychological abuse is both mental and emotional, this results in threats and/or humiliation to a person. Last but not least neglect, a form of abuse that results in the failure of caregivers to perform an expected responsibility to provide care as needed.\n

 15. In the mid 1990’s The Wisconsin State Journal did a Q&A with a researcher at the University of Utah. In this Q&A they were trying to get the results from a survey, that these researchers did, connecting animal abuse to domestic violence. In order to find this out they surveyed the largest shelters of battered women in 49 states. The results showed a clear connection between the two in most cases.\n\n-74% owned pets\n-71% of the 74% had partners who threatened or killed their pets\n\nAnother survey, during the year of 1995, was done in a women’s shelter in Wisconsin.\n\n-72% of the women were victims of domestic violence\n-86% owned pets\n-80% of the 86% the pets were abused.\n\n

 17. Many people don’t realize how many ways animals can really be abused. Animals can be psychologically abused as well as sexually when dealing with inbred animals. However, most of us are familiar with the two obvious ways of abuse, which are, neglect (passive cruelty) and physical (active cruelty). With physical abuse there is hitting, kicking and intentionally harming and animal, however, there is also the dog fighting and puppy mill aspect of animal cruelty, which some people don’t even realize is even considered abuse.\n

 19. Passive Cruelty is a form of non-physical abuse. This type of abuse causes psychological abuse to an animal, leaving them to have no trust. Some forms of neglects are starvation & dehydration (not feeding or allowing an animal to drink water as a form of punishment), parasite infestation (ticks and fleas crawling in the fur), keeping an animal outside in extreme weather conditions (cold front/snowfall or heat wave in the summer), and lastly when an animal is in need of medical attention and the owner refuses to do so (taking the animal to a vet when they are clearly injured in some way). It is easy To recognize when neglect to an animal is taking place because it is mostly physical. Flea and tick infestations are one way to tell, but along with the infestations patches of hair missing. If a dog is limping, or having a hard time standing up or walking, heavy discharge from eyes or nose, animals kept in cages that are so small that they are not able to move or turn around in them, if they cower or act aggressive when approached, and pets that are constantly left alone without any food or water and are chained in a yard. The penalties for animal cruelty is a maximum of 4 years in jail, Under the Minnesota State Statue, and a $10,000 fine. The less severe cases are charged with a minimum of $500.\n

 21. Physical abuse any act resulting in a non-accidental physical injury, including not only intentional assault but also the result of unreasonable punishment. Physical abuse is a form of active cruelty, which is where a person deliberately causes harm to an animal, which includes people training their dogs to be aggressive for dog fighting, puppy mills where dog cages are stacked on top of each other and when the dogs go to the bathroom it is falling on top of the dogs below them.\n

 23. Abuse is physical, emotional, and psychological caused by mistreatment or the misuse of power associated with authority. This is not only the case for animals but people as well. It is a corrupt or controlling act that can either be intentional or unintentional. The International Positive Dog Training Association believes that people who truly do love animals do not want to hurt or frighten them. There are a few techniques that should NOT be used to train an animal, such as, choke chains, pinch collars, shock equipment, alpha rollovers and other forms of physical pushing, punishing and/or domination. In the dominance theory, using force or physical punishment causes potential harm to a dog’s physical, emotional and/or psychological well being, which could harm the trust and respect dogs have in their owners. Using the words obedience and command in reference to training is not recommended.\n\n(Pictures- 1: Prong/Pinch Collar Injury)\n

 31. Choke chains cause physical abuse to a dog due to the way it tightens around the dogs neck. If this chain is tightened for a long period of time this can cause a pain, discomfort, injury, and the dog could suffocate from lack of air. Mainly the injury caused by this collar is injury to the trachea, which could lead to the trachea collapsing. The higher the collar travels or is placed on the dogs neck, the higher the risk is for something happening to the dog ant there is only a 50% chance that the holder will put the collar on correctly and a 50% chance that the collar may lock in the choke position.\n

 33. Although putting a collar on a dog is for their safety, this type type of color can become a physical form of abuse. These collars can cause dogs to cough, vomit, and gag if it is worn too long. MLAR (where I volunteer) is the Main Line Animal Rescue, located in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. They specialize in the rescue placement of unwanted, abused, and abandoned animals. Although they are a local shelter they do their best to raise awareness of homeless animals and the benefits of adopting sheltered animals. They also neuter, spay, examined, and vaccinated the animals so they are ready to be adopted. The Humane Society \n

Jindo’s don’t get along with other dogs, not even their own breed, but they are the most loyal and playful dogs that I have worked with. Yuri is estimated to be about six years old and is a female Jindo, her birthday is in the month of November and she was born in the year 2005. Lotus is also a female Jindo and is about 5 years of age. Her estimated birthday is in the month of July in the year 2006. Both of these dogs have the same story, five Jindo’s were found in a wooden crate outside somebody’s house. They were to become food for the family at dinner time. However, before anything happened to them, they were rescued and placed in the Main Line Animal Rescue facility, just as happy and fun loving as ever.\n
 70. Gumby is a male Chihuahua, while I was working with him he was very scared. He didn’t bark or make a sound, he didn’t want to even leave his cage and leave his cage members behind. When I picked him up he was just still, he didn’t move and when I brought him to a play yard, Gumby just hid under the lawn chairs. He is about seven years old and his estimated birthday is October 1st of 2004. Gumby was originally living in the Phoenixville SPCA, but he wasn’t getting adopted so they were going to put him down. Luckily, MLAR took him in to give him a chance to find a family and a home to live in.\n

 72. Shamee is a male Shiba Inu. He is very energetic, and loves to play in the bigger fields so he can run around. Most of the time he chases his tail stops and then sprints across the field. I remember taking pictures of him, as soon as pointed the camera in his direction he sat down and tilted his head so i could take a picture. Shamee’s esimated birthday is July 1st in 2006 making her around the age of five. Shamee was also taken from the local Phoenixville SPCA and surprisingly still has yet to be adopted, but she it definitely one of teh favorite dogs among the volunteers.\n

 74. Madeline is a female Shih Itzu. She is one of the friendliest dogs in the shelter and her favorite thing is pretty much begging for treats from the volunteers, and she gets them because all the volunteers love her and especially her little under bite. She really isn’t too energetic or too calm, she it right in the middle, but she loves to be walked. She is only one year old due to her estimated birthday of January 1st of 2010. Madeline was taken from the SPCA, she was taken the MLAR because of the SPCA overflowing with dogs and lack of room for new ones to come in, but she is safe and sound in MLAR and is playing with all of her new friends.\n

 76. Calista, like Gumby, is a Chihuahua, but unlike Gumby, Calista is female. She about 7 years old and has an estimated birthday of November 1st or 2004. She is such a sweetheart, when I was in her run she was the first one to jump on me and stick her nose in my pockets for treats. She was also taken from the SPCA so she could be given a chance to find a family of her own and a warm home to live in.\n

 78. Susanna is also a female Jack Russell Terrier, just like Jo. Susanna will seriously be somebody’s best friend if they give her treats. She is an extremely calm Jack Russell, which is really rare for that breed. She loves to be outside, although she doesn’t run around much, she just enjoys the fresh air. Her estimated birthday is May 1st of 2003 making her around 8 years old. Susanna, just like Bree, was born in a puppy mill, and then rescued and brought to MLAR to find her a loving family.\n

 80. For my class activity everyone will form a group of 3. Each group will get 1 dog collar and some puffy paint to decorate the dog collars. After everyone is finished place them in the back of the room to dry over night, and after they dry I am going to ship all of the collars to an nearby animal shelter for extra collar supplies.\n

 83. Animal abuse can happen right under your nose and sometimes you may not even realize its happening. Dog fighting is a way of life for some of these dogs, they have been fighting for their entire lives. Female dogs in puppy mills may never get a chance to live in a loving home, they only know the life of reproduction. However, some dogs, in shelters, still have a chance to find people that love them. Everyone can help these animals. Even just volunteering at an animal shelter has a huge impact on these animals because no matter how scared they may be, just sitting in their run with them lets them know that humans aren’t all bad and somebody can care about them. You wouldn’t believe the bond that you develop with some of the dogs, I never want to leave. Thank you for listening.\n
