Small Group Distance
Education Orientation
What is SGI Distance Education?
• A small group instruction (SGI) distance education
class is a course set in a remote classroom
environment such as Google Classroom or Canvas.
• SGI classes generally contain 15-20 students, which
allows for more personalized instruction.
• SGI classes revolve around core class subjects
(courses that are required for graduation) such as
mathematics, English language arts, science, and
social science.
Why should I take an SGI
Distance Education class?
• SGI classes create a more interactive online
environment. In a remote class setting, you
are able to meet new people and form new
bonds that you can’t when you do your
courses independently. You also get to
participate in fun activities such as debates,
science labs, Kahoots,
video projects,
and so on.
Why should I take an SGI
Distance Education class?
SGI classes provide guided instruction. The
core subjects are often difficult to complete
on your own. In a remote class, you’ll be able
to learn directly from an instructor and from
your peers, and
you’ll follow a schedule
that will ensure that
you complete the
course by the end
of the semester.

Rules and Expectations for the SGI
Distance Education Classes
Rules and Expectations
To earn credit for the class you
must complete ALL assigned
work and assessments with
passing scores of 70% or better.
Just as in real life, your work is a
reflection of who you are and
what you’re about, so always give
it your best effort. You WILL be
asked to fix or redo assignments
that are not up to standard, so
save yourself some grief and do it
right the first time!
Rules and Expectations
There is zero tolerance for
cheating, inappropriate images,
foul language, cyber bullying,
etc.
Plagiarism (copying someone
else’s work – from a friend or
family member or website – and
claiming it as your own) is a big
“NO”! Do your own work.
Rules and Expectations
Participation in weekly online class sessions
is required!
• You will only have to meet once a week (for
each subject) during your assigned day and
time. Make sure your computer has a
working camera and microphone.
– Please don’t schedule appointments
during your class hours!
• SGI teachers will use this block of time to
explain difficult concepts, teach new
material, review for a test, or complete lab
assignments, among other activities.
Rules and Expectations
• Be present and on time for our weekly
online class sessions! Since we meet only once
a week per subject, we will start promptly at our
scheduled class time. Every time you miss a class
session or enter late, you put yourself in danger of
falling behind. Three or more absences may result
in being removed (dropped) from the class.
• Contact your SGI teacher (call the center, send an
email, send a text through REMIND, etc.) if there is
an emergency and you cannot make it to the class
session. No matter what the reason was for missing
class, you are responsible for getting
caught up on your make-up work.
Rules and Expectations
Be mindful of the time when you are
contacting your teacher or tutor for help.
• Send emails and REMIND messages between 8:00 am
and 4:00 pm, if you expect help that same day or the
next school day. You MUST use your OFY email for
SGI classes!
• Don’t text your teacher or tutor before 7am or after
4pm, or on weekends.
Rules and Expectations
Be prepared to learn!
• YOU should set up a schedule and follow it so you
finish assignments on time and avoid getting stressed
out about late work. Click on this link for ideas:
Daily Schedules for Remote Students
• YOU should make it a habit to sign into your classes
daily and complete any upcoming work in a timely
manner. Expect to work a total of at least 6 hours a day
on all your schoolwork combined.
• YOU need to ask for help when you are stuck. There
are also MANY educational online sites that can help
you understand your work better. Use them!
Virtual Meeting Etiquette Rules
1. Dress appropriately--dress as if you were
going to school. It will put you in the right
mindset to focus and be productive.
2. Be aware of your surroundings--sit down at
a desk or table for your class sessions and make
sure there is nothing
inappropriate on display
behind or beside you.
Virtual Meeting Etiquette Rules
3. Mute your microphone when you’re not
talking--background noises can be very distracting
to other people in the session.
4. No food allowed--get a snack before the
meeting! No one wants to watch you eat, and
you can’t focus on the presentation if
you’re focused on your food.
Virtual Meeting Etiquette Rules
5. Stay seated and stay present
Don’t be texting your friends on your phone
during the meeting--you might miss
something important!
Watch your body language: sit up straight,
don’t fidget too much or get up out of your
seat and walk around. You need to focus your
attention on the speaker!
6. No foul or inappropriate language--use
formal language when communicating in class.
● All SGI classes begin on
Monday, August 23, 2021
● SGI teachers will have your units and
