It Starts with the Source - Source English Terminology in a Multi-Channel, Gl...Val Swisher
The document discusses how consistent terminology is important for structured authoring, translation, and global mobile content. It notes that consistent terminology is essential for structured authoring and content reuse in XML. Consistent terminology also makes translation cheaper, better, and faster by reducing words, reusing words and sentences, improving translation quality, and allowing for faster translation and reviews. Finally, consistent terminology is the most important factor for delivering responsive global mobile content across different devices and languages.
Thinking Strategically About Content Destined for Machine TranslationContent Rules, Inc.
Val Swisher is the founder and CEO of Content Rules, a professional services firm specializing in content strategy, creation, and quality. The presentation discusses how machine translation is becoming more widely used but relies on high quality source content. Poor or ambiguous content can train machine translation engines incorrectly, resulting in poor translations that require extensive post-editing. Pre-editing source content to make it more consistent, grammatically correct, and globally ready saves time and money compared to post-editing translations by reducing issues and improving quality.
Content Rules is a professional services firm that provides content strategy, creation, and global readiness services. They have 12 full-time employees and a network of over 2,000 consultants. For content strategy, they perform content audits, modeling, taxonomy development and globalization planning. They create marketing, technical and training materials. They also ensure content is optimized for translation by evaluating readability, style and reuse potential using tools. Their presentation covers developing a global content strategy by locating all company content, creating a catalog of it, standardizing translation memory usage and understanding various content localization methods.

In this webcast recording Bill Swallow, the manager of the GlobalScript division at LinguaLinx, discusses some of the ways you can cut your localization costs while still delivering quality content.
Life Technologies implemented a cloud-based translation solution with Cloudwords to improve their global content management and localization processes. This helped Life Technologies establish governance over their translation strategy and budget, standardize their content management workflow, and leverage existing translations to reduce costs. The solution integrated Cloudwords' translation API with Life Technologies' CMS to automate translation workflows. This provided local teams direct access and control over translated content while improving search and reducing technical issues. The new process is expected to optimize Life Technologies' global content delivery and further innovation.
Language quality as foundation of enterprise content strategyBen Colborn
An enterprise content strategy initiative has been underway at Nutanix for over two years. This initiative had its start in a cross-functional, grass roots technical content council. When the council reached the limit of what could be accomplished as a grass-roots effort, executive sponsorship was found. With funding from IT, a content strategy consultant was engaged.
The consultant interviewed representatives from all content-producing organizations—which in a modern enterprise is every organization. The ultimate recommendation of the consultant was to structure the content in preparation for reducing the impact of silos. Two tools were deemed to be critical for this first step: language quality analytics (Acrolinx) and a component content management system.
Four organizations that produce customer-facing content—technical publications, education, support, and solutions/technical marketing—were selected to be the first to step into this new approach. Other teams, including corporate marketing, are expected to follow. The user experience team, which was not identified as a participant initially, is exploring how to leverage Acrolinx in the software development process.
Crucial for the cross-functional nature of the content strategy is that Acrolinx meets content producers where they are, rather than requiring a centralization exercise beforehand.
Evolve13 Adobe CQ Conference - Life Technologies and Cloudwords Customer StoryMichael Meinhardt
This powerpoint deck was first presented by Blair Hardie, Life Technologies and Michael Meinhardt, Cloudwords at the Evolve13 Adobe CQ conference in San Diego, CA on August 28th, 2013.
The document discusses best practices for content localization to control translation costs. It recommends moving localization earlier in the process, using single sourcing and XML to promote reuse. Authoring practices like writing clearly, consistently using terminology and planning for translation can reduce costs. Localization requires partnership between technical communicators and translation vendors.

Leveraging linked in to get yourself noticed (1/2013)Val Swisher
LinkedIn is underutilized. It's an amazingly powerful tool for professional networking. Once you master it, the right kinds of opportunities manifest much more readily.
In this slide deck, Andrew Davis covers what LinkedIn is, the essentials of the professional Profile, and how to tweak your account settings to restrict who can see what. He focuses on how to get yourself noticed. He concludes with several real-world scenarios -- specific to the audience Andrew spends his days helping, namely technical content developers (tech writers, editors, trainers, and marcom writers) -- detailing how to use LinkedIn for best effect in different contexts.
Note that this presentation is supplemented by ~15 short articles and screenshots, available separately (and for free) from Andrew at andrewd@contentrules.com.
In this presentation, we analyze two global websites to see what makes a global content strategy successful and what makes it fail. We also discuss best practices for creating a global content strategy.
Translators Without Borders works to simplify health information content into simple English so it can be more easily translated and understood globally. They have projects in Kenya, Africa translating Wikipedia medical articles and health brochures into over 80 languages to improve access to healthcare information. The organization provides training to translators on writing in simple, clear language to maximize understanding and save lives by preventing deaths from a lack of medical information.
