From 27-29 October 2014, WLE, in cooperation with the CGIAR Systemwide Program on Collective Action and Property Rights (CAPRI) and the CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees, and Agroforestry (FTA), held a workshop on Institutions for Ecosystems Services in Washington DC.
The goals of the workshop were to:
-Encourage sharing and discussion on research methods and tools to study the links between institutions and ecosystem services
-Synthesize lessons about institutional arrangements needed to ensure that ecosystem services projects are able to deliver benefits to local resource users and produce local, regional, and national global environmental benefits
-Identify policies and program interventions that can strengthen these institutions
-Outline priorities for future research, policy, and project implementation, particularly of relevance for PIM, WLE, and FTA programs
Issues of Governance in Spatial PlanningRoberto Rocco
This is an updated version of a lecture I have prepared on GOVERNANCE and arising issues connected to governance in Spatial Planning and Design. This particular version was presented at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management of the University of Copenhagen, where I stayed I short while as research fellow.
Urban populations have been growing at an unprecedented rate around the world and there is growing concern that building-related environmental impacts also continue to rise. This has prompted a range of stakeholders in the built environment to make commitments to create and implement more sustainable building and construction solutions. Our research question thus mines this untapped potential: How might we enable widespread participation by actors in the built environment to participate in the transition toward a more circular economy? Our synthesis map focuses on the prosperous Canadian commercial building sector, and aims to empower actors within this industry to discover their unique role.

Little research has been done into the actual motives underlying the local opposition found in British local communities against renewable energy schemes to be settled in their areas. Further research on the issue
would be helpful for the UK to meet their target share in the battle against climate change.
This work compiles, in a structured way, existing literature about the basic concepts of social networks and communities to be taken on for that research. It outlines the importance of communities’ involvement in
developments, and gives a range of successful cases where communities and developers have provided each other with a range of different benefits. Some lessons from the past are presented that can help
developers to assume proper methods and models for involving communities, as well as to prevent mistakes from being repeated. The document ends with some possibilities for the Government to further encourage community involvement.

Presentation for Kororoit Institute's International Symposium and Workshop - Living Spaces for Change: Socio-technical knowledge of cities and regions. 29 February – 2 March 2012, North Melbourne, Australia
This is the dissertation I have submitted to the LSE as a part of my MSc in Environment and development. It seeks to integrate the well established literature on elite capture with the relatively new literature on community based adaptation.
Abstract:
Community based adaptation (CBA) is gaining momentum as an approach to enhance the adaptive capacity of those most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. It builds off of decades of experience in community based approaches to development and natural resource management. Still, the lessons from these past approaches, particularly regarding elite capture, seem to be forgotten in the practice of CBA. If CBA projects suffer from elite capture, they will not succeed in reaching the most vulnerable people within communities. This paper seeks to integrate elite capture into the discussion on community based adaptation by testing whether CBA practitioners are omitting past lessons learnt from decades of experience with elite capture into the design of projects.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
