Companies are now established to help libraries adopt Open Source software solutions without the need for in-house support and development staff. Nick describes the ways in which a company such as PTFS Europe can help overcome some of the procurement, implementation and support barriers preventing the more widespread adoption of these solutions.

Free and open source software in europe policies and implementations
This document discusses the increasing adoption of free and open source software (FOSS) by European public administrations. It provides examples of FOSS implementations across different countries and sectors. Some of the benefits mentioned include cost savings, innovation, flexibility and technological independence. Open Source Projects: The Prospero Experience
Prospero is an open source electronic document delivery system originally designed to work with the Ariel system. It converts documents to PDF and places them on an authenticated website for patron access. The system was created by the Ohio State University to address the need for timely access to full-text journals online at a low cost. It has been downloaded over 260 times by organizations in 21 countries. Benefits of the open source Prospero system include establishing the service when needed, allowing others to do the same at low cost, and promoting learning of new skills outside of traditional library systems.
BLDS Migration to Koha (KohaCon12)
The British Library for Development Studies migrated from an old proprietary library management system to the open source Koha system. They chose Koha because it was developed and maintained by a worldwide community, allowed them to install and modify it themselves, and aligned with their objectives of building capacity in developing countries. After evaluating various open source options based on licensing, community support, and functionality, Koha was seen as the most complete system. The migration was outsourced to a third party vendor and took approximately 8 months. While some issues remained, the implementation was considered a success with praise from users.

Evergreen LMS Overview
Evergreen is an open source library management system launched in 2006. It was designed to be robust and scalable for consortiums. It is used successfully by the PINES consortium in Georgia, which serves over 17 million circulations annually across 275 branches. Evergreen continues to evolve and grow, adding new capabilities and being adopted by more library types and in more countries.
Session 8 - Koha in the University Classroom
MSc students on the Strathclyde University’s Digital Libraries module used virtualised instantiations of Koha, to set up a basic Koha configuration. Future aims are to deliver the Koha part separately as a CPD course for librarians in Scotland.

Ken has over 20 years experience in the global library software business. He set up his consulting business in 2007 and has worked on projects for the UK's JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee), SCONUL (Society of College, National and University Libraries) and the UK’s Research Information Network (RIN). He is currently working on a HEFCE funded project that include both shared services and Open Source in its remit. He works on technology issues and strategy development with major libraries. He has published articles and presented widely on the strategic impact of technology driven change’
Session 4 - Developing Open Source Software - The Lessons
Index Data have found that projects where open-source software is seen simply as a cheaper alternative to a proprietary solution rarely reach such satisfactory conclusions as those where the method of working takes advantage of the open-source approach. The principles described in this talk will be illustrated by real-world examples drawn from actual experiences.
Session 3 - The State of Evergreen
Bob will provide an introduction to the Evergreen ‘Superconsortium’, and a speculation about the future evolution of Evergreen and the Superconsortium. Equinox software provides support and development services for Evergreen, one of the key open source library systems.
Session 5 - SOPAC: Further Separateing Front Office and Back Office Application
This session will focus on how a tool developed in a few weeks for a single library in New Zealand has become an award winning ILS, developed worldwide, used by more than 1000 libraries, and supported by many OSS companies. Paul Poulain has been involved in free software since 1998 and the Koha project since early 2002. He has been Release Manager for Koha 2.0 and 2.2, and remains a major contributor. Paul co-founded BibLibre in 2007 to provide high level support, training, migration on Open Source software for libraries (Koha and Drupal)
Session 7 - Implementing VuFind in a HE partnership setting
The why’s, when’s, and how’s of the current implementation of VuFind as part of an integrated resource discovery suite for the 3 Welsh Universities within the South West Wales Higher Education Partnership (SWWHEP). VuFind is being integrated with existing commercial (closed source) LMSs.

Spark is the widely used ETL tool for processing, indexing and ingesting data to serving stack for search. Milvus is the production-ready open-source vector database. In this talk we will show how to use Spark to process unstructured data to extract vector representations, and push the vectors to Milvus vector database for search serving.

It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
