environment harmful emissions

On July 11, 2011, an explosion rocked the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base in Zygi, Cyprus. 98 containers of explosives detonated accidentally, killing 13 people and damaging buildings all over the island. The estimated damage to the Cypriot economy was estimated to be more than €3 billion. Nothing was spared from the explosion wave, including the Energy Authority of Cyprus’ (EAC) Vasilikos Power Station, which was responsible for 50% of the country’s electricity. Four 6FA gas turbines were knocked offline, causing a countrywide energy shortage. At GE, we know that our customers are our partners every day—not just the good days. That’s why a GE team sprang into action immediately, supplying parts and performing repairs within days of the disaster. More than 200 GE repair engineers and other technicians contributed to a rehabilitation effort and helped repair or replace more than 10 major turbine components. The rapid rehabilitation effort was critical for EAC, Cyprus, and its residents, helping the country regain control of its power as well as limit the significant costs associated with the use of temporary generators. Two of the four turbines were back in service less than a year after the incident, an unprecedented statistic for a disaster of this magnitude. Cyprus' electricity sector relies on imported petroleum products, and as a result, electricity prices in Cyprus are some of the highest in the European Union. The country’s goal is to develop a more localized energy portfolio, and the planned construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility at Vasilikos will go a long way towards that goal. Energy is one of the most important factors for a developing country like Bangladesh. Like the rest of the countries of the world, the demand for energy is increasing day by day in our country. Energy sector of Bangladesh is exceedingly depended on the limited gas reserve. Given the rising demand for fuel it will be very difficult t to meat this demand with only indigenous natural gas. About 80% of the power generation in the country is now gas based. Therefore diversification of fuel has become indispensible it has been envision 2021 that 53% of the power generation will be coal based by year 2021. The worldwide scenario shows that, Coal is the ultimate fuel for future. Bangladesh is very lucky that it has got significant but almost untapped high quality coal resource. Five coal fields in the country contain 3.3 billion metric tons coal. Recently rate of coal production from Barapukuria are increased significantly due to application of modern coal extracting method, LTCC. Coal to Synthesis gas conversion, is an emerging technology to wide the application area of coal and commercially proved technology worldwide. The paper gives an overview of the current state of coal scenario and natural gas scenario in Bangladesh. Here we discuss the principles of coal to syngas conversion technology and aside from a brief introduction to 5 process methods for conversion of coal to Synthesis Natural Gas (SNG). The Steam-Oxygen Gasification, Hydrogasification, Catalytic Steam Gasification, Underground Steam-Oxygen Gasification, Underground Hydrogasification processes are discussed with the help of process flow diagram. This paper also summaries the present scenario of Syngas production worldwide. Finally we propose a coal based syngas infrastructure, where coal is converted to syngas, then processed to make Synthesis Natural Gas (SNG), then it transmitted via dedicated pipeline or injected into existing natural gas pipeline to the different types of user like Household, Thermal Power Plant, Brick Field, Ceramics & Glass Industry and any kind of thermal process industry. This proposed technology is design to reduce the dependency on natural gas.

The article provides the results of calculation of carbon emission factor for Ukrainian electricity grid for the period 2012-2015 using publicly available data. Carbon emission factor for Ukrainian electricity grid is estimated using operation margin emission factor method in line with the provisions of the latest versions of the relevant CDM tools. The results provided could be used when calculating GHG emission reduction for renewable energy (where a project activity supplies electricity to a grid) and energy efficiency projects (project activity that results in savings of electricity that would have been provided by the grid.

How Accurate are Carbon Emissions Projections?

This paper presents the feasibility study of replacing HFO power plants with LNG power plant, taking into account the balance of electricity supply and demand in the energy mix of Burkina Faso. The study consisted of calculating and comparing the optimal electricity production costs of each production mode and verifying the competitiveness of electricity production cost using LNG compared to HFO. The simulations results showed that LNG cost being less expensive than HFO cost, the production cost per kWh of electricity using LNG is very competitive compared to the production cost per kWh of electricity using HFO. Power plants running on LNG can replace HFO plants in electricity production in Burkina Faso. Switching to natural gas will optimize Burkina Fasos energy mix and ensure energy security at a compatible cost with household income. The seminar on Problem Formulation for the Risk Assessment of Biopesticides stemmed from a previous CRP-sponsored event on Innovating Microbial Pesticide Testing that identified the need for an overarching guidance document to determine when in vivo tests are necessary. Problem Formulation, a common practice in pesticide risk assessment, was highlighted as a useful approach for addressing uncertainties in data requirements for biopesticides. The seminar featured presentations from various perspectives, including industry, regulatory bodies, and academia. Topics included the history and principles of Problem Formulation, industry perspectives on Problem Formulation and how it is applied internally for microbial pesticides, regulatory approaches, and specific case studies.
