VuFind was chosen as the discovery system to integrate the catalogs of three different library management systems used by the academic libraries in South West Wales. It required overcoming challenges like hosting multiple instances, merging data from different sources and standards, designing a dual language interface, and developing drivers to connect to each library system. Lessons learned include that open source solutions can work well but require significant staff time and resources, and collaboration is key to success. Future plans include sustaining and mainstreaming the system, exploring additional shared services, and investigating other open source library systems like Evergreen.

If the central concern of a Data Mesh is about enabling analytics, then how is Kafka relevant?
In this talk we will describe how we managed to apply Data Mesh founding principles to our operational plane, based on Kafka. Consequently, we have gained value from these principles more broadly than just analytics. An example of this is treating data as-a-product, i.e. that data is discoverable, addressable, trustworthy and self-describing.
We will then describe our implementation, which includes deep dives into Cluster Linking, Connectors and SMTs. Finally, we discuss the dramatic simplification of our analytical plane and consuming personas.

Our ride with Snowflake began 4 years ago. We faced the daunting task of building a decentralized data platform that could empower our 50+ engineering and analytical teams with autonomy while complying with international regulations.
Snowflake has quickly become an essential component of our platform, enabling new cross-teams and cross-department data-sharing scenarios that have led to significant time-to-market and cost reductions (up to 2x). If the central concern of a Data Mesh is about enabling analytics, then how is Kafka relevant?
In this talk we will describe how we managed to apply Data Mesh founding principles to our operational plane, based on Kafka. Consequently, we have gained value from these principles more broadly than just analytics. An example of this is treating data as-a-product, i.e. that data is discoverable, addressable, trustworthy and self-describing.
We will then describe our implementation, which includes deep dives into Cluster Linking, Connectors and SMTs. Finally, we discuss the dramatic simplification of our analytical plane and consuming personas.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
