Background / Assumptions • Our last master plan was completed in 2000 • Our committee re-confirmed our long-term goal of eventually having our entire school system on our 12st Street campus. • Our current system is composed of 3 campuses with a student capacity of over 1200 students. Given our current enrollment of around 800, and classroom distribution; both our Westnedge and high school campuses are underutilized. • Any substantial growth in student enrollment would typically be seen as entry into the lower grades or through our pre-school system. • The high school (Stadium Drive) campus will remain a very valuable, visible and useful campus for the foreseeable future. 3

Options Considered • Retain all 3 campuses “as is” with minor changes • Retain the elementary school as is, consolidate the middle school at the high school, and sell the Westnedge campus • Consolidate the middle school at the elementary school. Retain the high school as is, and sell the Westnedge campus • Consider a “hybrid” solution; move the 6th grade to the elementary and 7th & 8th grades to the high school, sell the Westnedge campus OTHER COMMENTS: Moving the pre-school, utilize portable trailers 4 and consider shared occupancy scenarios.
- 5. Recommendations • Proceed with the design and construction of a middle school wing attached to the elementary school on our 12th Street campus • Proceed with technology improvements at both remaining campuses (high school and elementary) • Proceed with the sale of the Westnedge campus 5

Recommendation / Advantages • Retains our successful and established middle school program • Sell under-utilized asset – proceeds to be better utilized for our program • Consolidation would reduce annual operating expenses • Improves our ability to promote increased technology learning • New construction promotes positive image and enthusiasm 6

Design / Construction of Middle School Wing • Establish a project team (1 month) • Working with administration and staff, establish preliminary scope and size (2 months) • Interview and select design firm (1 month) • Establish a construction estimate (2 months) • Upon approval, finalize construction documents (2 months) • Earliest “groundbreaking” – May, 2012 • Construction completion (12 months) • Middle school occupancy – September, 2013 7
- 8. Cost / Construction of Middle School Wing • Preliminary cost estimate of $3-4MM, dependent on scope, size, and extra’s • Funding to be provided by existing capital fund, sale of Westnedge property and donations raised through a capital campaign 8
- 9. Cost / Construction of Middle School Wing • Recommendation would be to not proceed with construction until we have cash and pledges in hand to keep our long term debt at $3.3MM (plus operating shortfalls of $0.6MM) 9
- 10. Sale of Westnedge Campus • 8 acre parcel – 3 acres zoned commercial and 5 acres zoned residential • Appraised value of $1.4MM • Selling phase could take up to 2 years • If sold immediately, look for shared occupancy options 10

- Tonight asked to talk about 1:1 opportunity, and we’ll get to that\n
- but first I want to talk about something more important to me, even more interesting to me than technology\n
- And that is my kids, their education and their future. \n
- My daughter did something a little crazy...\n
- Kids are upstairs, I was getting ready in the basement, wife was out for run. Kayleigh wakes early and wants out of her room, we have rules not until its time...\nSo after her cries for help result in nothing...\nA Two year old’s scientific process! \n
- She decides to fire up the FaceTime app on her ipod and video call me in the basement to let her out of her room. \n\n
- She’s looking for the answer to the problem that satisfies her needs. \nGreat for her to try something different and not accept the first ‘no’ as the answer\nGreat for me to reinforce the idea that as a parent, as a teacher, there are still absolute in my home, in my classroom. \n

- But it also begs the question, if this is her world now, what will her world be later?\n
- What will life be for the class of 2026? \nWill there be jobs?\n
- Will colleges be the same? Who will be able to afford it? \nDoes their future job even exist today? \n
- Truth is we don’t know. If Facebook were a student it would be starting the 3rd grade this year. Youtube would be a 2nd grader and twitter a 1st. \nMy children’s world is going to look a lot different than my world. How do we prepare them for that? \n
- For my kids, I start by giving them knowledge. \n
- I would continue teaching an academically rigorous curriculum that results in students who know their facts. The content stays the same (while always improving)\n
- If my daughter has to pay for her meal on her first date ate age 25\n
- She had better be able to calculate the tip herself instead of using one of the millions of tip calculators available on her smart phone because mental math matters. \n
- I expect my kids to spell too. If you have space to write correctly you need to write correctly. Only when space is an issue, like in a tweet, do you shorten. \n\n
- My kids need to know facts and be able to recall them quickly. Although they also need to be able to research them when appropriate. A doctor operating should know, a doctor not operating should be researching and building more knowledge. \n\nA time for knowledge, a time for searching. \n
- I also want my kids to have skills. Not on the basketball court or football field, but skills to navigate their world. \n
- It is a skill we are all born with\n
- but then we go to school and become “educated” and some of us lose that creativity. \nKids express things in different ways and I want my children to be able to do the same. \n
- My kids need to have the skill to write, but not just for a teacher. For each other. For their friends, for their community. \nMy kids need a chance to find their voice, they can do that through writing.\nWriting something that has meaning to an audience that cares is powerful for a student. \n
- As they find their voice though I want them to share it: \nCreate tutorials for other studnets\nMake a quick video or podcast introducing a topic or definition\nHow “unique” would a video created by seniors on how to survive freshman year be? \n
- Review each others work and be honest, but be kind. \nStop being “gentle” and speak the truth. \nAs you give learn to take, \n
- In your world it is called collaboration or teamwork. For kids in school it is called cheating... I want my kids to cheat. \n
- I want my kids to work with others\nClassroom Scribe\n\nI want my kids to work with the world...\n
- Collaboration Coordinator - I want my kids to connect to other kids. Study American Revolution with a class from Great Britain... think that would be the same? \n8th doing Justice right here in town. What about other cities? Connect online with them? \n
- Seek out more learning. I want my kids to take charge of their learning, because after school they are on their own. When questions come up in class I want someone to research the question. \nHow great to have a classroom of 2-year olds asking why AND giving the teacher the permission to say I don’t know, why don’t you look it up and share it with us later? \nI also want them to seek out their own problems and solve them. The ones that have meaning to them. \n
- I want my kids to share. Not just their stuff, but their knowledge, their learning. I want them to give back. \n
- Colleague shared he found out his school had taken 2.5 million quizzes online. What if instead they shared their knowledge and made edits to Wikipedia instead? Even if it was just a fraction the ‘good’ it would do for others would have more meaning and relevance than an online quiz.\nElementary does good through Kiva donations. A great platform for sharing and caring. \n
- I want my kids to fail in school. As long as they learn from it. Let’s make F the new A. Not to dilute the education, but to learn through experience, doing, creating and learning from the failures along the way. \n

- Communication face to face. In a civil way. not through texting or e-mail only, but in person. To communicate well. With kindness and compassion and empathy. \n
- I want my kids to learn how they learn best. Lectures, previewing material, reviewing after class, listening, viewing, doing? They’ll need this regardless of College... \nIsn’t that what all of you want? How incredible would it be for a student to learn how they learn and apply it to church? \n
- Students know they learn best by reading the text first. Or learn best by learning after. Or it turns out they are really good at just listening. What a gift to give to the kids. \n
- Finally I want my kids to have a Biblical vision for life. \n
- I want them to learn discernment. To fight the temptation greed and shortcuts presented to them daily. \nMorals\nEthics\nResponsibility\n
- I want my kids to be strong in their faith and use their voice to lead others. Through writing, talking, serving. Living. \n
- I want my kids to live out the mission of Kalamazoo Christian School. If I were a classroom teacher, that is what I would want for your kids as well. \n
- This isn’t a done deal, however waiting to get things in order is not a prudent option either. There are things in place to start the process as soon as approval is given. \n

- We begin by opening up our classrooms through the use of technology. We continue to teach the same great academically rigorous content that we do today, but we bring in technology so that students can collaborate, create, explore, express and build wisdom. \n\n
- We can allow our students to build on the knowledge they’ve gained, share it with each other, under the guidance of a trained teacher and build wisdom. \n
- it meansWe cannot teach the Knowledge, Skills and Biblical Vision needed today unless we use the tools and resources that our students will be using in the future. We have an opportunity and a calling to redeem the technology, to use it for good and teach discernment, to glorify Him. we need to take that opportunity. It is our mission. \n\n
- That is why I’m proposing a 1:1 laptop program using Apple computers to begin 2012-2013. \n

- Technology allows the student to take charge of their learning and permits teachers to deliver content in new ways\n
- Less time graphing, more time collecting data. Data sets from class not just small groups. \n
- Students can search the Gutenberg project and the web for free poems, stories, great stuff. \n
- Keep up with current events\nFollow paths on Google Earth/Maps of wars, traders, expeditions, plagues\nPhysically see the geography of Palestine, Israel\n
- Students can take and edit photos, videos, record audio. Create and record a dance.\n
- By sharing assignments online, and permitting online submission the dog can’t eat your homework anymore. KIDS LOVE IT!\nNo more sick days either... \n
- The shy children can speak up. Critique, learn, and grow as a voice in the classroom and alone. \n
- Some traditional assessments can be opened up for students to create their own proof of knowledge. Doing so to an audience outside just the teacher tends to result in better quality and more meaninful work. Students who do work that they know others will see do a better job. \n\n
