1. Taxonomic publications are considered "legal documents" as they establish nomenclatural decisions under taxonomic codes. As such, everyone should have access to these legally binding documents.
2. Taxonomic descriptions are factual knowledge based on direct observations, so the descriptive parts of publications cannot be copyrighted and should be open access.
3. Publications can be broken down into the basic data elements of individual taxon descriptions, which contain details like descriptions, specimens examined, and characters. These descriptions are the building blocks of taxonomic knowledge.
This document contains a collection of quotes and sayings on various topics from notable figures such as Stephen Covey, Chinese proverbs, Ghandi, Susan Erz, Albert Einstein, William Wallace, and others. Sherborn: Fautin & Alonso-Zarazaga - LANs: Lists of Available Names – a new g...ICZN
Article 79 of the ICZN Code, which appeared first in the Fourth Edition, outlines a procedure for adding large numbers of names to the List of Available Names simultaneously, as a Part of the List. This feature has gained importance with the development of Zoobank, because the LAN can be an important adjunct to or component of Zoobank. Article 79 describes a deliberative process, detailing steps for submission and for consideration by the public and Commission, and their chronology: submission must be by “an international body of zoologists,” and the proposed Part must be available for “comments by zoologists” for 12 months, followed by another 12-month period for comments on the proposed Part as revised in light of comments received. However, Article 79 it is mute about the contents of the submission. It is clear that adding a Part to the List will prevent long-forgotten names from displacing accepted ones – thus, for taxa on the List under the provisions of Article 79, nomenclatural archeology will not be worthwhile. Beyond that, Commissioners who participated in writing the Fourth Edition are divided about the intent of Article 79: some aver it is intended to document every available name within the scope of the Part, others it is to pare the inventory of names within the scope of the Part. The comprehensiveness of the names in the Part is critical because, according to Article 79.4.3, “No unlisted name within the scope (taxonomic field, ranks, and time period covered) of an adopted Part of the List of Available Names in Zoology has any status in zoological nomenclature despite any previous availability” (names may subsequently be added only “in exceptional circumstances,” according to Article 79.6). Under the first interpretation, the Part functions as a strictly nomenclatural archive. Under the second interpretation, the Part pares away nomina dubia, so Parts of the List resulting from actions under Article 79 are like the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names that took effect on 1 January 1980 – taxonomically recognizable as well as nomenclaturally available. It is critical that a consistent basis for implementing Article 79 be adopted; it is unrealistic to expect unanimity, given the diversity of opinion among those who helped craft Article 79.
The document discusses the completion of Linnaeus' task of cataloguing Earth's biodiversity through the development of ZooBank, an online registry for the nomenclature of animal names. It outlines how previous works like Systema Naturae, Zoological Record, and Index Animalium helped in this effort. ZooBank would provide globally unique identifiers for names, publications, authors, and type specimens to facilitate accessibility, completeness, accuracy, and quality control of nomenclatural data online. This would support the goals of transparent taxonomy and serve various stakeholders.
The newsletter summarizes events of the St. Petersburg Downtown Optimist Club. Scott Kaplan won the $600 raffle basket drawing. The next Bunco party fundraiser for scholarships will be January 21st. The Youth Appreciation Banquet is January 11th. The club provided dinner for the Ronald McDonald House on various dates. The Christmas dinner was held and gifts were collected for Brookwood Home for Girls.
This document summarizes a presentation by Ivan Oransky on how we know what we know in health sciences and challenges to creating knowledge. It notes that retractions are on the rise, studies are often wrong, and "winner-takes-all" incentives can encourage dishonest practices. It discusses how anonymous whistleblowers, aggressive blogs, journals listening to post-publication peer review, and altmetrics are helping address these issues. The presentation cautions about positive publication bias and confirmation biases affecting knowledge, and calls for publishing all data and more conditional drug approvals to improve reliability of knowledge over time.
The document discusses the importance of knowledge management and social networking for organizations. It explains that traditional methods like email are no longer sufficient for sharing knowledge in real-time across organizations. Knowledge management systems and enterprise social networks allow organizations to capture, share, and disseminate information faster among employees and experts. This improves organizational performance, productivity, and training of new employees. The presentation provides examples of how a social networking system called CustomerVision has benefits like informal learning, expertise sharing, and reducing customer service needs for organizations.
This short document discusses peer-to-peer tutoring (PPTs) and Google Docs, taking a neutral stance on PPTs by describing them as neither good nor bad. It also mentions having experienced problems with Google Docs in the past and raises the question of how students might be affected.
Global Image is a South African company that provides geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analysis services. It was formed through the merger of GIS divisions from other companies and can draw on over 35 years of collective experience. Global Image helps clients make better decisions by analyzing spatial data and information. It offers basic data collection and mapping, advanced analytics, and publishing of information through online and printed maps. Global Image has offices in Gauteng and Western Cape provinces and serves both public and private sector clients.
This document provides an overview of the book "Applying UML and Patterns: An Introduction to Object-Oriented Analysis and Design and Iterative Development, Third Edition". The 736-page book teaches object-oriented analysis and design through two case studies, with each iteration introducing new skills like use cases, domain modeling, system sequence diagrams, and operation contracts. It emphasizes an iterative, evolutionary approach using the Unified Process. The document excerpts several chapters to demonstrate the types of content and level of detail covered in the book.

considerazione tutti questi aspetti.
