Most micro-organisms that live in our body, on our skin and surround us in our environment
are harmless. However, some micro-organisms can cause infections and disease, and these
are called pathogens.
Food (nutrients)
Warmth
What are micro-organisms?
Micro-organisms are tiny living creatures that cannot be seen by the naked eye.
Examples of pathogens include: bacteria (e.g. Pseudomonas), viruses (e.g. Hepatitis B), and fungi
(e.g. Athleteโ€™s Foot)
Micro-organisms require 4 conditions to grow and multiply:
SECTION 2

Moisture
Time โ€“ in less than 7 hours, one bacterium can multiply into 1 million
The growth of micro-organisms has four main stages:
ยท Lag phase โ€“ little change in numbers
ยท Log phase โ€“ the micro-organisms multiply - this is the fastest phase
ยท Stationary phase โ€“ no growth at this stage
ยท Death phase โ€“ the organisms die due to the lack of nutrients.

Bacterial Growth Phases
Blood-borne viruses (BBVs)
P A G E 6
These viruses are spread from person to person (directly or
indirectly) through blood.
The most common BBVs linked to special procedures are:
Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV (Human Immunodeficiency
Virus)
Hepatitis B - infects the liver, many people with Hep B wonโ€™t
experience any symptoms. Risk of developing life-threatening
problems such as scarring of liver (cirrhosis) or liver cancer.
There is a vaccination.
Hepatitis C - infects the liver. If left untreated, it can sometimes
cause serious and potentially life-threatening damage to the
liver over many years. There is treatment for Hep C which often
doesn't have any noticeable symptoms until the liver has been
significantly damaged. This means many people have the
infection without realising it.
Sexual contact
Vertical transmission (Mother-to-Baby)
Sharing equipment during injecting drug use
Needle stick or other sharps injuries
Poor practices and using contaminated instruments when performing special procedures
Receipt of infectious blood or blood products
1 in 3 when a source patient is infected with HBV and is classed as being highly infectious at the
time.
1 in 30 when the patient is infected with HCV.
1 in 300 when the patient is infected with HIV
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) damages the cells in your immune system and weakens
your ability to fight everyday infections and disease. Most people experience a short, flu-like illness
2-6 weeks after HIV infection, which lasts for a week or two. After these symptoms disappear, HIV
may not cause any symptoms for many years, although the virus continues to damage your
immune system. This means many people with HIV don't know they're infected.
Routes of transmission:
Risk of infection following percutaneous injury (needle stick injury):
(HPA, 2008).
Bacterial infections
Bacterial infections are passed on by direct contact with an infected person/carrier or
contaminated objects/instruments/products.
P A G E 7
These three bacteria cause the most common skin infections associated with special
procedures
They are stronger than BBVs and can live longer outside the body
Some strains can be resistant to antibiotics and make infections more difficult to treat.
Pseudomonas Streptococcus Staphylococcus
These bacterial infections only occur in humans and can all be treated with antibiotics.
Can affect the lungs, gut, urinary or genital organs
Possible infections โ€“ impetigo, cellulitis
Can affect the skin and mucous membranes
Possible infections โ€“ hair follicle infections, boils, impetigo, abscesses
Can affect the skin and soft tissues
Possible infections โ€“ cellulitis, leg ulcers
Staphylococcal and Streptococcal Infections
Streptococcus (pyogenes)
Staphylococcus (aureus)
Pseudomonas โ€“ an opportunistic pathogen
Mycobacterium chelonae (NTM)
Another opportunistic pathogen which can cause a range of infections, is very robust (strong)
and resistant to some antibiotics
