1. Dear Sir,
Reference for Ms Rebecca SEAL b.04/03/94
Dear Sir/Madam,
I have known Ms Seal for 4 years, she is an officer cadet within Mametz Company, of the Wales’
Universities Officer Training Corps, and I have had contact with her work on a weekly basis.
During her time with the company she successfully completed the Module 1 basic military syllabus
and the Module 2 leadership package.
The Module 1 basic military syllabus involved fieldcraft and weapons drill, but taught much more
than that. It is designed to foster confidence and self reliance in an individual as well as encourage
team work to achieve a common goal. Not only did Ms Seal successfully complete the course, she
excelled at it, becoming a role model for her peer group and was identified as a potential
leadership appointment for the future. She was always willing to help those of a lesser ability,
devoting much of her spare time to help and encourage others which was almost like having an
extra instructor within the group. A quiet and modest individual she was well respected within her
peer group.
Ms Seal then progressed onto the Module 2 leadership package. This course is intended to
develop the leadership potential of cadets and involved the learning and utilisation of a decision
making toolkit to solve problems. This decision making process, known as the 7 questions, gives
the cadets a structured framework to work with in order to identify, address and solve problems,
which is then translated into a set of orders to achieve a goal. The cadets are then tested on their
ability during a practical outdoor exam, in which the candidates have to receive a set of orders, use
the 7 questions to formulate a plan, then write a set of orders to deliver the plan to an examining
officer. All this has to be completed within a tight time frame, and in the elements. The idea being
to test the candidates’ understanding of the process and to test their ability to work under the
pressure of a time deadline in any weather.
Ms Seal completed the exam to a high standard, she formulated a logical working plan and
delivered it in a confident and concise manner with time to spare. She achieved a pass within the
top third of her class of 100 other cadets, and her professionalism was praised by the examining
officer.
Ms Seal was appointed as the leading cadet within the company’s administrative team, formally
titled as the Company Under Officer. This entailed the running of a busy bar with responsibilities for
the re ordering of stock, the security of the takings and the balancing of the accounts, she also
supervised the bar staff and ensured that all duties were performed the highest standard, and was
also responsible for the welfare and discipline of 80 officer cadets. A competent instructor, she was
also utilised to assist in the development of those cadets who required one to one tuition, and it is a
testament to her hard work, patience and teaching skills that the cadets entrusted to her care were
able to progress within the development programme. She was also on hand to chaperone the
female cadets within the first year group, devoting much of her spare time to teach them the basic
lessons of equipment care and turnout.
She is a keen outdoor sportswoman and has qualified as a mountain leader and has successfully
completed the rock climbing foundation course, participated in two diving trips, an arduous hill
walking expedition to Corsica, and successfully completed the 3 Peaks Challenge, where the
participant has to successfully climb the three highest peaks in the UK within 24 hours.

2. Ms Seal is a trustworthy, hard working individual who will succeed in any field of endeavour she
chooses and I cannot recommend her highly enough for any post she applies for.
She is now finished with her university studies, and as such is discharged from the unit, however,
should I be in a position in the future to re employ her I would not hesitate to do so as she is a
valuable asset to any organisation lucky enough to have her on staff.
Should you wish to discuss Ms Seal further please do not hesitate to contact me.
Respectfully
