Trauma-Informed Leadership - Five Practical Principles

1. Good afternoon ma’am,
So today I am going to explain on one of the most popular dimensions of the Hofstede model
which is known as Power Distance.
This dimension basically explains about the degree to which the less powerful members of a
society accept and expect that power is distributed unequally, that is, it speaks on beliefs
about the appropriate distribution of power in society. The fundamental issue here is how a
society handles inequalities among people. So, People who live in societies that exhibit a
large degree of Power Distance tend to accept the hierarchical order in which everybody has
a place and which needs no further justification. Whereas In societies with low Power
Distance, people strive to equalise the distribution of power and demand justification for
inequalities of power.
Now, I am going to compare the level of difference in power distance between India and a
country which is considered one of the most developed nations on earths which we know as
Germany. SO, when we observe the difference, we notice that
Comparison between India and Germany
GERMANY
In the case of Germany, we can observe that it received a score of 35, from which we can imply
that it follows a low power distanced culture. From this score, we can say that although the
people of Germany value hierarchy, the distance between different levels of society is quite
low. It is basically a country which is highly decentralised and supported by a strong middle
class. Also in this country, it can be observed that co-determination rights are considered
extensively and are required to be taken into account by the management. So, in any German
company superiors will ask subordinates for feedback on a project, as well as subordinates will
be readily available to give criticism at multiple levels of power. Any form of direct and
participatory type communication is common, control is hated, and leadership is challenged to
demonstrate knowledge, which is most accepted when it is founded on it.
INDIA
Now, in the case of India, we can observe that the country has received a high score of 77 on
this category. This indicates that the individuals of this country show their appreciation for the
hierarchy and top-down system in society and business. Some of the following words and
phrases could be used to describe the Indian attitude: being reliant on the boss or the power
holder for direction, acceptance of unequal rights between the power-privileged and those who
are lesser down in the pecking order, immediate superiors accessible but one layer above less
so, paternalistic leader, gives reason / meaning to one's work life, and rewards employees in
exchange for loyalty. Here, Real Power is completely centralized even though it may not appear
to be and managers count on the obedience of their team members. The employees of any
2. company in India anticipate to be told exactly of what their responsibilities are and what is
expected of them. Also, control is highly familiar and the attitude that is displayed towards the
superiors are considered formal even if they are on first name basis. And finally, when we talk
about level of Communication in any Indian society and company. It is completely top-down
and directive, and any sort of negative feedback is frequently delivered up the ladder.
