FVS 336: INTRO TO WRITING THE SHORT FILM SCREENPLAY
PROFESSOR: JEREMY (JER) SKLAR
DANIEL: But how do I know if my picture’s the right
one.
MIYAGI: If comes from inside
you, always right one.
from KARATE KID by Robery Mark Kamen
INTROS: What’s MY Story?
 Who Is This Dude Yapping At You?
 JER SKLAR, Born in Chicago, Illinois, always wanting to make movies!
 Chaotic 20s as an ACTOR, MUSICIAN… eventually SCREENWRITER
 Sold Horror and Sci-Fi screenplays to various Production Companies
 Worked for four years in Hollywood as Development Executive (hated it.)
 Hired to write FREERUNNER, a 5M action-comedy, later hired as Ghost Director --
WANNA SEE THE (AWFUL) TRAILER? --
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJrJySlqWXQ&t=2s
 NY as a Segment Producer for Chris Rock’s “Totally Biased” on FX.
 Unhappy with career, went back to Chi-town for film grad school to become more
of the DIY FILMMAKER I always dreamed of being.
 In post-production on my first Feature Film TOM OF YOUR LIFE. Want to see the
AWESOME trailer? Too bad, here it is: https://vimeo.com/257817810
 Hired by Purdue, and here I am… A proud Boilermaker, boring you already.
What’s YOUR Story?
 Sure, your name… year in school, major… But this is a storytelling class…
what’s your STORY?
 Give us a beginning
 In the middle, give us one of your biggest challenges you faced in your life and
how you faced it, resolved it…. Success? Humbled but better for it?
 Give us an ending to this little story.
ASSIGNMENT ONE: BRAIN DUMP
 BUY A REGULAR NOTEBOOK DEDICATED ONLY TO MORNING PAGES
JOURNAL

 “WHAT DO I WRITE?” ANYTHING. THE SACRED, THE PROFANE, THE
MUNDANE. ONE WORD OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THERE IS ONLY ONE RULE:
DO NOT CENSOR YOURSELF, DO NOT STOP TO EDIT, TO THINK, JUST WRITE.
 I WILL GLANCE/CHECK PAGES EVERY WEEK BUT NEVER READ… IN FACT, IT
WILL NEVER BE READ BY ANYONE, EVER, MAYBE NOT EVEN YOU!
 “IF NO ONE READS IT… WHAT’S THE POINT?” TO LEARN HOW TO QUICKLY
TRANSFER THOUGHT TO PEN IN AN UNINTERRUPTED FLOW. TO GENERATE
POSSIBLE IDEAS FOR SHORT FILM SCREENPLAYS.
