Christopher Nolan; Background
Christopher Nolan was born in London in July 30th, 1970. He first
started filming at the age seven with his fathers super-8 camera
creating short films, he studied English Literature at UCL while he
shot 16-millimeter films at UCL’s film society. Nolan’s first break
was ‘following’ (1998) on a budget around $6000 what then grossed
an estimate of $43,000. Nolan received a variety of critically
acclaimed awards after this release including his success in winning
the best director award from Newport International Film Festival. In
recent years Nolan has became known for his new technique and
creative thinking in success movie hits such as memento and the
rebooted batman franchise. Nolan is famous for his innovated
narration techniques such as his precise editing to confuse the
audience with plot twists for example controlling the time in
memento.
 Almost every Nolan movie starts with a scene, which plays a key role
in the movie later, and grabs the audience attention immediately. It
can be the bank robbery scene in ‘The Dark Knight’, the plane hijack
in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, or the Magic Trick in ‘The Prestige’.
Nolan doesn't believe in slowly introducing the movie, it comes with
an adrenaline packed introduction what will engage the audience
and make them glued to the screen from the very start.
The Dark Knight The Prestige The Dark Night Rises
 Christopher Nolan usually opens his films with extreme long shots
to establish the scene and the area they are within, however the
extreme long shot is usually brief and is either following or panning
towards action/an important character. This is again portrayed in
‘The Dark Knight’ where the camera pans through a city’s skyline to
a particular window, ‘The Prestige’ where the camera pans through a
isolated forest filled with Top Hats and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’
where the camera tracks a plane what is currently flying over rocky
mountains.
The Dark Knight The Prestige The Dark Knight Rises
 From the opening two minutes of the dark knight the audience are
aware that five clown masked men are attempting to rob a bank. The
opening shot is an extreme long shot panning through the skyline of
a city what then reveals a shattering window, this presents two of
the robbers finding their route towards the bank via zip-line
towards the banks roof this suggests an intelligent plan is about to
unfold. Then there is a cut revealing another character waiting
among a pave walk holding a clown mask what the camera later
zooms into to highlight its significance and importance, as the
narrative later unfolds that he is the mastermind behind the
operation. There is a sense of enigma within the opening scene as
the characters are repeatedly questioning each other about the
existence of the ‘Joker’ what is causing them to kill each other off to
maximise the profit within their shares, however it is then revealed
to us that one of the characters was the ‘joker’ the whole time.
 The opening two minutes of ‘The Prestige’ reveals to the audience
that the film is set in the past due to the establishing shot of the
forest and the clothing of the characters. The narrator of the film is
then revealed teaching a child the three stages of a magic trick what
then cuts back to a ‘flashback’ of a magician performing his trick
step by step from the narrators three stages. This is then revealed to
be a significant moment in the narrative as the magician is then
trapped within a glass box filled with water beneath the stage while
his assistant from the crowd watches him, this then comes to the
audience’s knowledge that this scene is not apart of the trick what
creates enigma as the viewer is not currently aware of what is taking
place.
