Senior Design: For my senior design civil engineering project at UNF, I participated in
designing and building a computer technology room for a school in Cojimies,
Ecuador. We designed a climate controlled room with wiring for 40
computers. We also designed desks and a new electrical system with a
backup power generator. There was a lot of construction management
involved in this project. We had to coordinate with our local contacts in
Ecuador, many of whom did not speak much English. Other unique
challenges involved determining what materials were available, sourcing
these materials and organizing local workers to start the project before we
arrived from several thousand miles away. In the end we raised $20,000 for
the supplies, paid our own travel expenses and travelled to Ecuador and
successfully implemented our design in May, 2010.
