Meaning of Nutraceutical:
ā¢ Nutraceutical is defined as any substance that is a food or part of a
food and provides medical or health benefits, including the
prevention and treatment of disease
ā¢ Nutraceutical products can be considered non-specific biological
therapies used to promote general well-being, control symptoms, and
prevent malignant processes
ā¢ The term ānutraceuticalā combines the two words of ānutrient,ā
which is a nourishing food component, and āpharmaceutical,ā which
is a medical drug.
ā¢ The name Nutraceutical was coined in 1989 by Stephen DE Felice,
founder and chairman of the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine,
which is an American organization located in Cranford, New Jersey.

ā¢ The term Dietary supplement is defined in the Dietary supplement
Health and Education act (DSHEA) of 1994 , A dietary supplement is
a product intended for ingestion that among other requirements ,
contains a dietary ingredient intended to supplement the diet .
ā¢ In general a Dietary supplement is a product taken by mouth that
contains a dietary ingredient intended to supplement the diet such as
like : vitamins , minerals , amino acids, herbs and / or other botanicals
ā¢ Dietary supplements come in a variety of forms, including tablets,
capsules, gummies, and powders, as well as drinks and energy bars.
Popular supplements include vitamins D and B12; minerals like
calcium and iron; herbs such as echinacea and garlic; and products
like glucosamine, probiotics, and fish oils.

Functional foods
ā¢ Functional foods including whole foods and fortified , enriched, or
enhanced foods , have a potentially beneficial effect on health when
consumed as part of a varied diet on a regular basis , at effective
levels.
ā¢ FDA, defines functional foods as āa food, which beneficially affects
one or more target functions in the body, beyond adequate nutritional
effects, in a way that is relevant to either an improved state of health
and wellbeing and/or reduction in risk of disease

psychological needs, and Physical adjustment
