The blood transports oxygen and nutrients throughout the body via arteries and veins, which have three layers. It carries away carbon dioxide and waste via plasma. Red blood cells contain hemoglobin which carries oxygen produced in bone marrow. White blood cells produce antibodies and destroy harmful microorganisms. Blood clots protect the body by clumping platelets together. Capillaries are single-layered and facilitate gas exchange between blood and tissues.
