This document outlines a community radio initiative in Chennai, India called "Science for Women" that aims to educate disadvantaged women about science through a radio program. It provides background information on the project partners, goals of empowering women and increasing scientific awareness, target audience of 1000 women living in a slum, and research methodology including formative audience research through surveys. The initiative will produce a daily 15-minute radio program broadcast on Anna FM covering various science topics over 12 months, and conduct ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the program's impact.

General Observations
Many do not possess FM Radio sets
Few of them have sets that don’t work
Some of them listen to radio through cable television
Some homes have asbestos sheets for roofs
A few kitchens are with very poor ventilation
Women were found squatting on the streets cleaning and cutting fish
Firewood was being used while cooking on the street
Small puddles of stagnant water is a common sight
Mounds of uncleared garbage welcome you at street entrances
Monkeys from the adjacent Raj Bhavan complex are frequent
People use the Raj Bhavan complex to throw in their waste
Hordes of pigs live across the huge wall where the garbage is dumped

Most women were receptive to our survey and cooperated well

A few older women were cynical about the exercise
The digital camera and Anna FM stickers fascinated the women folk
About 10 per cent of homes were found locked for the vacation
