Feed-forward Research
To Understand the Audience
• Characteristics
• Needs
• Constraints
Survey Method through Questionnaire administered by
Action Researchers
Its proposed to provide the respondents with specially
fabricated single band - Only Anna FM – radio sets with
regular battery supplies to facilitate sustained listening
SCIENCE FOR WOMEN
A Community Radio Initiative in Participatory Science Communication
Pre-Production Research
• Previewing of scripts and programs with subject experts
• Previewing of scripts and programs with audience
• Revision of scripts and programs on the basis of previewing and
field testing
• Ensures greater acceptability of programs by audience
• Proves cost effective and time saving
SCIENCE FOR WOMEN
A Community Radio Initiative in Participatory Science Communication
Prototype Production Research
• Pilot program produced in radio magazine format with varied
segments- Vox pop, interview, dialogue, jingle, skit, quiz and
feedback
• Tested on audience to assess attention span and with respect to
realization of objectives
• Segments revised and retested
• Stage set for prototype production
SCIENCE FOR WOMEN
A Community Radio Initiative in Participatory Science Communication
Resource Mapping
• Exploring and identifying institutions and resource persons
for expertise in academic content
• To identify talented resource persons for research, scripting,
pre-testing, recording, editing and production
• To establish networking and linkages for enhancing
production quality

Feedback Research
• To obtain feedback on a consistent and regular
basis
• By way of interaction with the audience
• Through structured schedules and observation
techniques by action researchers
SCIENCE FOR WOMEN
A Community Radio Initiative in Participatory Science Communication
Monitoring the Broadcast of the Programs
Provides information about
• sequencing of different segments of the program
• capsuling of the programs
• Scheduling with reference to audience segments
• frequency of repeats
• quality of broadcasts
• transmission and reception
• helps rationalize program scheduling and capsuling pattern

SCIENCE FOR WOMEN
A Community Radio Initiative in Participatory Science Communication
General Observations
Many do not possess FM Radio sets
Few of them have sets that don’t work
Some of them listen to radio through cable television
Some homes have asbestos sheets for roofs
A few kitchens are with very poor ventilation
Women were found squatting on the streets cleaning and cutting fish
Firewood was being used while cooking on the street
Small puddles of stagnant water is a common sight
Mounds of uncleared garbage welcome you at street entrances
Monkeys from the adjacent Raj Bhavan complex are frequent
People use the Raj Bhavan complex to throw in their waste
Hordes of pigs live across the huge wall where the garbage is dumped
SCIENCE FOR WOMEN
A Community Radio Initiative in Participatory Science Communication
Women pumping and carrying pots of metro water
Women queuing in the scorching sun at ration shops
Most women were receptive to our survey and cooperated well
A few women refused to pose for photographs
A few women did not want their ailments to be documented
A few older women were cynical about the exercise
The digital camera and Anna FM stickers fascinated the women folk
About 10 per cent of homes were found locked for the vacation
Groups of women whiling away their afternoons in merry chatting
Most women appealed for employment opportunities
They felt it most important than any campaign
SCIENCE FOR WOMEN
A Community Radio Initiative in Participatory Science Communication
The Essence of Participatory Media……
….is to have faith in the people that it is they
and not the experts who know what is best
for them and their community, and given the
opportunity they can create knowledge for
the improvement of their lot.
