CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) are man-made substances that were formerly used in refrigerants and aerosol sprays. CFCs deplete the ozone layer by breaking ozone molecules into their constituent oxygen atoms. When UV radiation hits a CFC molecule, it releases a chlorine atom that catalyzes the breakdown of many thousands of ozone molecules. International agreements like the Montreal Protocol have led countries to phase out CFC production to allow the ozone layer to recover. While CFCs are being removed from the atmosphere, their long lifetime means they continue to impact the ozone layer. Public awareness of products containing CFCs and support for initiatives that protect the ozone layer can help address
