A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

9. But before we move on with the lesson,
let’s warm up a little, what do you say?
Well done!
10. Each picture represents an emotion.

11. Can you show me this
emotion through your hand
movements, facial
expressions and voice?
12. Can you show me this

22. The purpose of your presentation
will depend on your topic!
If your topic is “Reducing Pollution”
Your purpose could be ‘To Persuade’

23. Rules of the Game
You will think of a topic and write it down.
"Identify the purpose"
Game!
Decide the purpose of the topic and
note it down!
24. Does that sound like fun?
Yes / No
You have 3 minutes to write your topic
and your purpose!
34. Let’s see how we can write an introduction
on the topic used in our first exercise.
Topic - “Reducing Pollution”
Purpose
35. I can say something like:
What can I state about the topic?
1
"Today I will be talking to you
about rising pollution how it is
affecting us and what we can do
to reduce pollution in our daily
lives.”
36. What can I say to state the challenge?

I can say something like:
38. It's Quiz Time!
Let’s see how much you remember!
Rules of the Quiz!
I will jumble the order of sentences
You have to place the sentences in the right order
Let's start!
39. To write an introduction you need
to follow the steps in which order?
State your topic

Write a short introduction for the same topic using the 2 steps we just learnt!
You have 5 minutes to complete this exercise!
42. Let us now learn about the third step!
Purpose Introduction
Main Point
Conclusion
43. We are going to do this
using two simple steps:
1
2

Effect
Main Point
Let me explain how we will do this using a few examples:
44. If your topic is
‘Smoking is a health hazard’
The cause is smoking a cigarette.
Purpose
The effect is damage to the lungs.
1
2
Cause
Effect
45. If your topic is
‘How to make tea’

1
2

Effect
46. The two-step process is an
easy way to write your main
points for almost any topic.

warming is taking place.

51. Let us do another short activity!
Here are the rules:
Choose the same topic for which you wrote your purpose and introduction.
Think of the cause and write it down in 50-100 words.
You have 5 minutes to complete this exercise!
Think of the effect and write it down in 50-100 words.
52. Let us now learn about the fourth step!
Purpose Introduction Main Point
Conclusion

we leave the audience with action points:
WHAT THEY NEED TO DO

our first exercise.
Topic - “Reducing Pollution”
Purpose
55. ‘You too can do your part in reducing pollution.
Get your vehicle’s pollution certificate updated
Avoid burning leaves and paper during winter
Avoid throwing garbage out on the road
Try to walk or cycle for short distances instead of driving
To conclude our presentation,
we could say something like:
'If we all practice some of these simple steps, we
can contribute to reducing pollution’
56. Let’s see if you can apply the same
process to write your conclusion
Rules of the Quiz!
Choose the same topic for which you wrote your main points.
Think of the action points for the audience.
Write down at least 5 points.
You have 3 minutes to complete this exercise!
