I am always looking for new ways to grow.
Growing up (and now working) in Woonsocket, I have a firm grasp on the kind of student living in
Northern Rhode Island. The geography, educational climate and social climate are all familiar to me
and that is part of the reason why I want to work in the region. After spending over two years out of the
country as an ESL teacher and after working in the rural schools of southwestern NH, I wanted to focus
my educational energy and time giving back to the place where I grew up. Some people never leave,
others go away forever, but most, I believe, travel in long arcs that eventually lead back to the place
they have always called "home." Rhode Island is my home and I have a strong desire to set my roots
down here to contribute to where the state will go in the future.
I am a very active writer and artist with a strong belief in community involvement.
My creative classroom would have a presence of some kind not only in the classroom but also outside
of it. As a volunteer coordinator at Roosevelt International Academy, I discovered the value of getting
my students excited to learn about issues, go out and make a difference, in some capacity, in the
Providence Community. I want to do the same with my class. I want to take project-based learning
down a few grades and adapt community projects and in-school, hands on projects to the elementary
grades. Through platforms such as a class Dojo, Plickers, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr, we
will find a way to share what we are doing as a class with the outside world in a way that is creative,
artistic and proud.
We will start our days with current events at Morning Meeting, reviewing class projects we hope to
complete, try and discover that fit into the at times strenuous and rigorous time blocks that must be set
aside for common core Math and Reading blocks.
With a belief in the education of the whole child, I will make sure that students are met where they are
to make them feel at home in my classroom. Leveled reading groups that rotate each day will always
allow one group to have small-group time with me. Established routine center-time will allow me to
call individual students to fill in the gaps in math or anywhere else they might be lagging behind.
Students who are ahead of the group, finishing work early and looking forward to future lessons will be
allowed to expand and grow at their own pace and they will conference with me and, at times, be called
upon to help teach parts of certain lessons.
Behavior in any classroom is key to improving and equalizing the learning of all students. My
classroom will be a place of structure and routine that awards students for creativity, but also
acknowledges the understood expectations of the classroom. Classroom models that have resonated
with me include Responsive Classroom and Lee Cantor’s Assertive Discipline. With an expectation
based classroom, students will hopefully be able to self-regulate class behavior and understand when
the classroom is not where they should be in order to learn. I will work to have my class all on the same
page when it is "time to learn." A warning, reflection based policy with an after-conference for
individual students in response to their behavior will be a necessary part of my classroom that is
hopefully only needed in isolated cases.
My classroom will be a safe place to make a mistake.
Everything will have a little bit of humor in it and I will work to find a way to engage and reach every
student. No one will ever be written off. My patience, ability to move on from something and my
empathy are all aspects of myself that I believe will contribute to a successful and well-rounded
classroom that seeks to expand outside of our school and into our community.
I love working in Woonsocket and making a difference in a community I love, but I am also always
looking for ways to grow and explore who I am and who I will become. What is my potential and
where will I find it?
