1. School life
School life was so different 500 years ago and 50 years ago.
On this webpage, you are going to know more about the
learning situation in the past.
3. 500 hundred years ago, not all children had the opportunity to study.
The poorer children could not study in schools,
so they could just stay at home and
help their parents earn money.
On the other hand, children from richer families
could study in the old-style private school.
4. Students needed to recite a lot of poems.
If they could not recite well,
teachers were allowed to inflict heavy punishments
on their students.
They could beat the students with a stick or a whip.
5. They were also allowed to punish their students
by asking them to kneel.
The students’ parents never complained,
because they believed that a strict teacher
could be able to change students’ inappropriate behavior.
Teachers had the legal right to punish students for their inappropriate
behavior.
7. The Hong Kong government provided 6-year free and compulsory
primary education to all pupils.
All children had the chance to study.
There were two kinds of schools,
those located on rooftops of buildings and
those similar to schools nowadays.

8. Students could learn a wider range of
knowledge instead of only poems.
They had Chinese lessons, English lessons,
Maths lessons, Music lessons,
Health and Nature lessons.
9. Teachers could no longer beat the students
or ask them to kneel,
but they could beat their hands with
hangers or textbooks, and ask students to
copy school rules.
11. Nowadays, students enjoy 12-year free and compulsory primary
and secondary education.
They can study on a big and modern campus.
Apart from the language subjects ( Chinese and English),
students have to study about STEM
( science, technology, engineering and mathematics ).
