This activity plan summarizes a Christmas nativity-themed activity for a whole class of 32 children. The teacher will read the story "The Bearer of Gifts" and discuss how it relates to the children's nativity play. Then children will work in pairs to identify similarities and differences between the story and their nativity. Finally, children will make their own special stars in an activity differentiated for high, middle, and low ability levels. The teacher will assess children's understanding of the nativity story and challenge individuals appropriately. Most children successfully identified elements of the story and completed their stars. The activity reinforced the children's knowledge of the Christmas nativity story.

The teacher of the classroom is Tracy Hagen, who works with 4K children at Eagle Bluff Elementary in Onalaska, WI. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. activity, have the star already drawn on card for them to cut out and decorate.
Low ability – using prompting to expand their knowledge and understanding of the
story and how it links with their own nativity, use prompting for them to identify
some similarities in the story and their nativity. During creative task, give them the
star already cut out for them to decorate with a selection of different materials.

- All of the low ability identified that the star in the story led Father
Christmas to baby Jesus. They were all successful in decorating their
stars and being proud of their final achievement.
- The majority of the middle ability could identify similarities in the story and
their nativity confidently, with some being able to notice some differences.
- All of the high ability noticed similarities and differences between the story
and their nativity consistently and confidently, and were successful
drawing round their template to create their own special star.
Feed-Forward Issues:
All objectives were met during this task.
Keep recapping over the basic story plot of nativity, reinforcing the main ideas
through practices to ensure that children build on their knowledge and
understanding.
