A Family
Friendly Move
Tips on moving with children
By Executive Homes Realty
One step at a time…
 Make every effort to keep your move a
separate event from any other major
personal events (i.e. Marriage
separation, loss of employment, loss of
a family member or beloved pet)

 Give your children plenty of notice prior
to moving day. Allow time for your
children to air any fears associated with
the move. Be sure to describe how your
family will benefit from this major event.
Educate to avoid fearfulness


Visit or look through photographs of
the new home. Pay special attention
to their new bedroom and play areas.
Include a tour of their new school
and park as well.



Drive around the new neighborhood
and community. Allow your children
to get a sense of the area and what
activities are available. Encourage
them to continue current hobbies
such as playing sports or art classes
in the new city.
Get Creative!


Create a keepsake together of the old
home. Photograph your current home and
make a book together. Or spend an
afternoon painting a picture of their
favorite spot or memory in the house.
Display this project in your new home.
Your children will appreciate the
opportunity to reflect on this big change.



Allow your children to voice their opinion
on their new bedroom. Let them pick out
a new paint color or bedding set. If its
outlandish, go with it! A touch of hot pink
or camouflage is a small price to pay to
encourage excitement. Freedom to be
creative is a healthy way for your child to
adopt this new space as their own.
Keep & Re-invent Family
Traditions


Continue your Friday night pizza run.
Make finding your new favorite pizza
joint a fun adventure!



Explore the neighborhood as a
family. Bundle up for an evening
flashlight walk and find a open space
to view the stars.



If distance allows, maintain play
dates with friends from the old
neighborhood and school.
Family Involvement


Host a yard sale. Encourage your
children to sell or donate their old
toys to make room for new ones at
the next house. This is a opportunity
to teach them how to budget for a big
ticket item like a new swing set or
basketball hoop.



Let your children help you pack some
boxes. Encourage conversation
about the move and all they have to
look forward to in their new home.
Be Positive!
 If you’re excited, your children
will follow your lead! If you are
stressed, the whole family will
feel the weight. Take this
experience as a time to bond and
encourage one another.
