Conflict Between Xerxes And Herodotus
Amidst the diversity of ideas and concepts that Herodotus develops throughout his History, the
notion that highly different political structures do exist and may eventually clash is a prominent
one. In accord with Herodotus manner of incidentally placing the essential cores of his arguments
and observations in microcosmic episodes scattered across the body of his narrative, the exchange
between Xerxes and Demaratus in passages 101 105 of Book 7 serves as a gateway into exploring
and discussing the ways in which the Greeksand the Persians differ, both politically and socially.
Through the contrast between the Greeks and the Persians that the conversation depicts, Herodotus
advances his narrative wide delineation of the disparity between the... Show more content on

Firstly, the dialogue is part of a series of implicit and explicit references in the History to the
radically different ways of living and governance that are exhibited by different societies.
Throughout their conversation, Xerxes and Demaratus juxtaposing assertions fuel Herodotus
ongoing discussion of what sets the Greeks and the Persians apart. This contrast, in turn, reveals the
disparity between those governed by the rule of law and those governed by an autocratic emperor.
In the History the Persian monarchy, as the prime example of unity under a centralized authority
figure, is consistently portrayed as resting on principles of fear, subservient conformity, and blind
loyalty. An example of this can be seen when Herodotus notes: All the rest of the Persians held their
tongues and did not venture to declare a judgment opposite to that which was in discussion (7.10).
This oft mentioned inability of the Persians to freely express their opinions and thoughts without
fear of punishment goes into suggesting the foundations of the Persian autocracy. The compulsion
of lash that Xerxes proudly favors during the dialogue becomes a potent symbol of monarchy in
History: ...and many of the barbarians fell; for behind their regiments their captains with whips in
their hands flogged on every man of them, pressing them

Living Conditions During Ww2
Several conditions in the Nazi concentration camps and work camps made it very hard for
children to survive. The camps were tremendously ruthless. The epidemics that broke out in the
camps, including the awful living conditions were very diverse mainly during the years that the
camps operated. They were also uniquely contrasting in each different camp. Whereas many other
conditions such as, executions, hard labor, etc. had a great effect of death of the children, some
conditions were worse than others causing the children to pass away real quick. Medical
experiments and living conditions had the greatest effect of death of children in the Nazi work
camps during WWII. Not only were the children involuntarily used for medical experiments they
were also forced to live in brutal living conditions.
Children died very easily because of how they were being treated. They became very weak. They
were not fed the right amount of calories and were not treated properly. Feeding the prisoners in the
concentration camps was a big issue during the holocaust. The Jewish prisoners were fed three
times thought the day which was spread out evenly between the morning, noon and evening. It

The period between 1813 and July of 1814, known as the Second Republic, is in reality the
Terrible Year of Venezuelan History. The War to Death decree creates a furor, and the combats and
indecisive battles, won or lost, follow one upon the other with increasing rapidity. Despite important
victories, BolГvar as well as General Santiago MariГ±o (who had previously liberated the eastern
areas of the nation) find themselves obliged to give way in the face of a more numerous adversary
led by the royalist JosГ© TomГЎs Boves.
Boves emerges victorious from the La Puerta battle (June of 1814), and the patriots are forced to
evacuate Caracas. A massive emigration towards the east takes place. There, BolГvar and MariГ±o
see their authority challenged by their own companions at arms. The Liberator finds again fraternal
asylum in Nueva Granada, where he intervenes with some measures of success in internal political
struggles which enable the city of BogotГЎ to find a place in the newly established United
Provinces. In May of 1815, in Cartagena, BolГvar resigns his command to avoid the outbreak of
civil war. In 1816, with Alexandre s help, he returned to Venezuelaand their forces seized

The Theme Of Conflict In The Shunned House
The Shunned House
Discuss Lovecraft s description of the house over the course of the story. Be sure to include details
from the beginning middle and end of the story.
Lovecraft describes the house as though it looked gloomy and torn down.
..the shunned house was vacant, with barren, gnarled, and terrible old trees, long, queerly pale
grass, and nightmarishly misshapen weeds.. ..The small paned windows were largely broken, and a
nameless air of desolation hung round the precarious panelling, shaky interior shutters, peeling wall
paper, falling plaster, rickety staircases, and such fragments of battered furniture as still remained..
(Lovecraft V.8)
Defend whether the narrator is a reliable narrator or not.
The narrator in The Shunned House, can fit in the unreliable category. As the story continues, the
narrator admits to lying to other characters, and presents a rather unreal story. The narrator says,
..Later I told Harris only through sheer necessity, and because he had heard odd tales from old
people which disposed him ever so little toward belief, (Lovecraft. V. 8.).
Describe the conflict in the story. Be sure to include what type of conflict it is, how it starts,
develops and is resolved.
The conflict in the short story is all of the events that happen in it throughout the short story the
house is said to give off bad vibes. There is a certain scene where the narrator awakens to an ear
deafening scream from his uncle; upon finding his uncle he

L. L Bean Boots Essay
Bean boots are not only used for hunting but are also used for day to day wear. The initials in
L.L bean stand for Leon Leonwood(Westbrook). Leon Leonwood was the founder of the LL bean
boots and started the company as well. The production of Bean boots dates back to 1912 and the
company is still making the same style of boots today (History of Ll Bean). Leon Leonwood
spent most of his time outdoors. Leonwood needed a waterproof boot that could be worn out
which inspired him to invent the Bean Boots ( History of Ll Bean). L.L. Bean boots are one of the
most popular outdoor footwear items that are on the market because they are waterproof, stylish,
and good for hunting.
The L.L Bean boot is known for being able to wear it in all conditions and one of these traits
include being waterproof. The boot consists of leather at the top and a rubber midsole.
Leonwood put them to the test as he was exploring outside for many years. The first time he
released his Bean boots, ninety nine of the one hundred pairs were returned because they were not
waterproof ( History of L.L. Bean ) . Leon wanted to perfect his product, so changes were made
which included a new kind of stitching where the leather connected to the rubber ( History of L.L.

600,000 bean boots were purchased with 20,000 more people on a waitlist to get popular
sizes(Green). The Bean Boots have been in production for about one hundred years and their sales
have been consistently good. In 2014, the sales were 54.9% then increased in 2015 to 215.3%.
The boots are very hard to find. There were only 600,000 pairs produced last year. Not many
retail stores carry them which means they would need to be ordered directly off their website if

The Political and Social Changes in Western Europe Essay
Western European people had endured a series of changes during the late medieval period.
Changes can be categorized into two aspects: politically and socially. On politics, Popes were not
as strong as they were due to conflicts between the state and the church. Socially, people began to
live a religion dominated life, and experienced active sexism towards women. These changes,
either positive or negative, have become an undivided part of European History. People faced the
rise and the fall of the Catholic Churchduring the medieval time. The Popesused to hold the final
authority for the church and over the state. PopeGregory VII asserted the Pope had granted the
divine power from God because Saint Peter was the first of getting this... Show more content on

King Philip s advisers challenged the Pope by quoting the Roman Law, which stated that the
King of France was completely sovereign in his kingdom and responsible to God alone (McKay,
364). Not long King Phillip arrested Pope Boniface VIII in Italy and had foreshadowed later
conflicts between the church and the state in the 14th century. The decline of church power
became even more apparent during the Babylonian Captivity (1309 1376). Pope Clement V s
agreement on King Philip s request of settlement in Avignon in southwestern France first signified
the Pope s leadership and authority had been weakened. Furthermore, after Gregory XI s death,
Urban VI (1378 1389) had been planning on church reform, but his endorsement of opposition
among the hierarchy had triggered a serious of disaster. As a result, Cardinal Robert of Geneva
was elected to be Pope and took the name Clement VII. The situation became two popes in office:
Urban at Rome and the anti pope Clement VII at Avignon, hence marked the beginning of the Great
Schism. France immediately recognized the antipope Clement while Aragon, Castile and Portugal
follow suit. For England, they recognized Urban VI and the

The Fight Between Grendel And Beowulf
Beowulf and Grendel The particular scene I wish to cover would have to be the fight between
Grendel and Beowulf, the defeat of Grendel. In Beowulf, during the Fight with Grendel, Grendel is
coming once more to feast upon the men of the grounds of Hrothar. Though unbeknownst to him, it
is a trap, and Beowulfis lying in wait to defeat the beast. The fight is well detailed, and Beowulf
wins and takes Grendels arm as a trophy, having got it by ripping it off with his bare hands. As it
is stated here, Yet he bought his freedom At a high price, for he left his hand and arm and
shoulder to show he had been here (Heaney, line 969, 971). The fight is fairly the same, the

The main point being that he spoke to Grendel as he fought him, Grendel being able to
understand him, and he speaks rather differently than you might have thought him to act.
Instead of the noble warrior he was in Beowulf, while yes he was extremely strong and mighty
he was much more brutal in the book Grendel I feel. The way he spoke to Grendel, basically
torturing him as he was gripping his arm so hard to the point the bones broke and it was ripped
off. He laughed at Grendle, commanding him to sing and mocking him, He smashes me against
it, breaks open my forehead. Hard, yes! Observe the hardness, write it down in careful runes.
Now sing of walls! Sing! (Gardner p. 171). This is one of the things Grendel says as he s killing
him, and it portrays him as very brutal and harsh in my eyes. Another was how Grendel acted
himself, externally and internally. While yes he was still a beast who wished to sustain his
bloodlust, he wasn t just a mindless, evil creature. He had feelings, and he was scared at any time
he felt he was dying or was in danger. These I feel are the main differences between these two
works and I find them very, very

Electronic Waste Essay
Electronic waste comes in many different forms such as old computers, old cell phones, broken
household equipment and machinery, and much more. The main categories for electronic waste or
e waste are ICT and telecommunications equipment, office electronics, large and small household
appliances, consumer equipment, leisure equipment, lighting, medical equipment, automatic
dispensers, monitoring and control instruments, and batteries (ayubmacharia.com). From these
different types of e waste, there are many different toxic substances that can escape from them in
numerous different ways. The principal toxic substances that are contained within electronics
include zinc, nickel, lead, barium and chromium(allgreenrecyling.com). When these harmful
chemicals are sitting in landfills, they can be spread by leeching into our groundwater, or being
released into our air when warmed up. Many landfills exist in third worldcountries, meaning that
billions of tonnes of electronic waste each year are sent to these countries. The toxins contained
within the e waste are then released into the atmosphere, and can even end up in products being
sent back to first world countries to be merchandised. There are many adverse effects of the
different toxic substances held within e waste. Firstly, zinc is a very common substance within our
environment, it is present within many different foodstuffs as well as within drinking water. Zinc is
not harmful in small concentration but with current levels

Food Multitasking Persuasive Speech
Food is something essential to the life of a human. Humans have come so far from when they
would have to hunt and kill their food. We now have all these flavors we can make with food,
seasonings, and just simply fire. Yet we waste the way the food really tastes. How? You ask, by
allowing our food to rest within each other in an explosion of stupidity! We disrespect the art of
eatingby allowing the foodto touch and mix together. Allowing the food to touch is very
disrespectful, and it shows unserious we take the art of eating, which means you don t totally
immerse yourself in the item you allowing it to your mouth for consumption. Eating is something
that takes dedication and cleanliness, and most essential is of course organization. Food... Show

Kidney stones form when your urine contains more crystal forming substances such as calcium,
oxalate and uric acid than the fluid in your urine can dilute. At the same time, your urine may lack
substances that prevent crystals from sticking together, creating an ideal environment for kidney
stones to form.
Uric acid crystals deposited in the kidneys can become large kidney stones. These are also known
as uric acid stones. These stones are formed in people who don t drink enough fluids or who lose
too much fluid, those who eat a high protein diet, and those who have gout.
Uric acid stones are very painful and can cause permanent kidney damage. The stones can form
obstructions which prevent your kidneys from removing wastes and causing infection. They can
also scar the kidneys with rough or sharp edges. These problems can lead to chronic kidney
disease and even kidney failure where kidney dialysis or kidneys transplant to treat complications
that could lead to more illnesses and even death.

The Crucible And Salem Witch Trials Similarities
The Red Scare and the Salem Witch Trials were both events that left a mark in American history.
The Red Scare began in 1917 and took place across the United States. The Red Scare was known
as the widespread promotion of anti communism. The Salem Witch Trials began in 1692 and
took place in Salem, Massachusetts. The Salem Witch Trials were various court hearings and
prosecutions of people in Salem accused of Witchcraft. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible, a play
about the Salem Witch Trials, to send a message to Senator Joseph McCarthy, the face of the Red
Scare. Even though both events took place at completely different times their connection remains
profound. The Crucible and the Red Scare have various similarities and allegories that make both
events connect despite the gap of time. Arthur Miller, wrote The Crucible with the intention of
comparing the Red Scare to the Salem Witch Trials. One of the many similarities between the
Red Scare and the Salem Witch Trials is the way both events started. Both events were started by
people making false accusations. During the Red Scare people were accused of being
communists. At one of his speeches in Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy
claimed to hold in my hand a list of individuals who were both serving in government and
participating in the communist party. (Brinkley2) Thanks to McCarthy s popular style, people
never questioned his supposed list. During the Salem Witch Trials people were accused of

Similarities Between The Balloon And The Red Balloon

Love and Friendship
Stopping for a few seconds to admire a flower, an insect, a phenomenon of nature, an architecture,
etc., in days full of worries, have become memorable. Also, all these seconds sent me every time
into a wonderful world, just like Confucius said, Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it
. The short films The Balloon directed by Martynas Zaremba and The Red Balloon directed by
Albert Lamorisse have the plot people s reaction for a few seconds at sight of a black balloon.
The Balloon film submits a series of reactions from various people in the city caused by a simple
black balloon with no intended meaning. The balloon starts to appear above the city one night
while people were sleeping. The Red Balloon , too shows an emotional story of friendship
between a boy called Pascal, and his red balloon. The writer and director Lamorisse succeeds
through fiction to combine reality, the wonder, and the magic of this friendship. In both short
films, the main focus is a floating balloon, but I believe that their differences are more striking
than their similarities. Both films The Balloon and The Red Balloon have a similar high point.
In my opinion The Balloon high point is that when the balloon appears on a street where a bad
boy with a knife in his hand is ready to commit an act of violence. The presence of the balloon in
that area stops the bad boy to commit it. Moreover, the bad boy looks his way to sky to admire
the balloon for a few seconds. Likewise, the balloon from Lamorisse s film avoid an act of
violence. For example, a gang of older kids chases Pascal around city, determined to steal and
destroy his balloon. The red balloon performs a miracle, it saves little Pascal from that chase. It
sacrifices itself and lets itself tortured with stones to save Pascal s life. Furthermore, the red
balloon dies for this cause. However, in three distinct ways, The Balloon and The Red Balloon
films are almost opposites. First of all, their score is very different. The Balloon film sound
source is the song with lyrics titled Time to Leave of the band Suicide DJs. The lyrics can provide
depth, powerful to the song, and make the audience to

Sara Bowling Analysis
Completing her final musical at NorthWood High School just a few weeks ago, Sara Bowling
finds herself at an interesting crossroads in terms of her performance career. While she possesses a
lifelong history with musical performance, beginning in her earliest memories, she is coming to
terms with an understanding of the fleeting nature of the opportunities provided to her throughout
her early life. A senior at NorthWood High School, Sara s eyes are fixed on the murky but exciting
adventure that is her future. She intends to pursue her post secondary education at Ball State
University, starting next fall, and aspires to complete all four years there as a member of their
honors college. That said, she is clear that while her enjoyment of music remains, her future pursuit
of performance is entirely uncertain. Speaking with Sara for any length of time, one can appreciate

exceedingly genuine. Even when she was cast as Gabriella Montez in NorthWood s recent
production of High School Musical a fitting full circle end to her theatrical career Sara valued the
experience not for her own glory but for the opportunity to be a leader for NorthWood s

How Violent Media Affects Children
There is a very important social issue that must be addressed to save our future generations from
decline. The social issue I will be analyzing is how violence in media affects children. Thus
brutality itself becomes at once the means to success and the content of success a success that is
defined in its most general terms, not as accomplishment or specific gain, but simply as the
unlimited possibility of aggression(Warshow 433). Doing evil deeds to reach a certain level of
success is how a gangster reaches success and this perception of bad being good clouds children s
judgement to do the right thing. Children are wrongly influenced by many mediums including drug
abuse in movies, anger management and video game violence. Violence in media affects children
in a negative way by influencing them to use drugs, become bullies and mature into abusive
adults because it gives people a false sense of reality towards violent behavior. The main reason
is how children use violence to stand out in a negative way among other Children. Using
violence to fit in with a group of people by doing drugs or being a bully towards others is a very
common example. Many groups use peer pressure to appeal to the crowd. Using drugs has
attracted many people to groups that deal drugs or promote the usage of drugs. The studies also
discovered that more than 14 percent of prime time television shows portray tobacco use without
any negative consequences, and more than 11 percent of American

Physical Impact Of Youth Sports
Impact of Youth Sports
Development of children who are in their early stages of life is critical not only for themselves,
but the future roles they play later in their lives. In fact, one of the most crucial parts of a child s
growth can stem from youth sports. Taking a look at youth sports as a whole it has become nearly
encoded within our modern society to have our kids participate in some sort of recreational or club
type atmosphere. Alison Prichard a top physical educator stated that There is little doubt that the
world is infatuated by sports. People watch them, analyze them, argue about them, spend money on
them, and encourage their children to play them. Not surprisingly, youth sport is the most popular
structured activity in the United States, with an estimated 45 million American children enrolled in
an organized program or team in 2005 (Prichard, 2015).
Youth sports has a plethora of positive aspects, and elements that stream from it, the importance and
impact that come along with each of these is where different arguments are made and
disagreements about the role they play occurs. At first glance, most would state the obvious benefit
from youth sports would be the physical aspect of the game which helps children more than
anything be able to create an environment and atmosphere in which they are active. Although, the
effect of youth sports has the ability to be able to make ripples in many more areas than just the
physical aspect. The psychological aspect of

Colonialism, By Lois Tyson Essay
Colonialism, the hunger to expand and conquer causes the world, becomes an endless arena for the
fight for dominance and inevitable discrimination that follows. Even once colonization ends, the
natives are not immediately free because of the aftermath that remains in the dust colonization
leaves behind.
One inevitable result of colonization is the establishment of social hierarchy that continues into
postcolonial society. In Using Colonialism/ Postcolonialism Critical Theory, Lois Tyson eloquently
explains the consequences of colonialism and the different facets of Postcolonialism. First, in a
colonial social hierarchy, unquestionably, the members of the colonizing culture occupy the top
rungs of the ladder (Tyson 248 9). Meanwhile, those who occupy the bottom rungs of the colonialist
social ladder whether their inferior status is based on race... or any other cultural factor are called
subalterns, who are then othered by the colonized, who believe their dominance and authority is
validation for their discrimination (Tyson 249). Through othering, the savage is... therefore, not
considered fully human (Tyson 248). This mindset does not belong purely to the colonists, but
applies to the colonized as well. To elaborate, Tyson uses the term colonized consciousness to
describe subalterns who internalize... the colonialist belief that those different from a society s
dominant culture are inferior (Tyson 249). Consequently, subalterns look to the dominant class s
culture to

The tribes seem to be self sufficient in dual production for either their household or the
community. As time progress the communal granaries turn more into the community stores and
depending on your position in the tribe depends on if you hold a key to a communal storehouse.
The storehouses distributed most of their food to public feast, ceremonial occasions or families
in need; like widows and orphans. The tribes like to feed the elite during political and social
activities and when supporting military operations (Hann 1986:145, Scarry, 263). The data is
limited, but those who have provided the evidence indicate that the Native American production
was truly impressive. Soto and his army covered many acres of land as they made their way
through the Southeast and commented on the fields and their abundance stored in the granaries.
Rangel discovered the same as Soto that everywhere they traveled there was an abundance of
their crops, whether it be maize, pumpkins, beans, etc. (Scarry, 265). Spanish documents show
that land sizes were estimated on how many people to a family whose consumption was based
on 25 to 50 percent of their caloric needs. Some researchers argue that plots were rotated every four

Corruption Of The National And International Level
Introduction
Corruption is the misuse of public resources and office for private gain. However, this definition
does not exclude the misuse of resources in corporate and private corporations. Generally,
corruption is perceived to be more widespread in certain countries than others. In particular, the evil
of corruption is widely practiced in developing countries. The most important consideration is to
understand why this is the usual trend in corruption across the globe. In a general perspective,
different theories have tried to associate this trend in corruption with specific cultural and historical
traditions, political institutions, levels of economic development, as well as government policies.
However, there is more to consider in this argument since corruption is also prominent in countries
with histories of British rule, protestant traditions, and less economic development.
During the past three decades, there has been a remarkable expansion in the people s ability to
measure the level of corruption. As a result, this has led to the development of ell identified,
microeconomic of corruption at the national and international level. This essay focused on
reviewing causes of corruption in developing countries in light with these recent advancements.
Reviews of less developed countries have revealed that corruption responds to the standard theory of
economic incentive. Furthermore, there is robust evidence that the effect of anticorruption
strategies in these countries

Bhopal Gas Disaster Of 1984
The Bhopal Gas Disaster of 1984
INTRODUCTION
On the Night of December 2, 1984, there was a horrific accident at the Union Carbide Pesticide
Chemical Factory in Bhopal, India. The factory produced a chemical called methyl isocyanate
(MIC) also know by Union Carbide as Liquid Dynamite . It is an organic compound with the
molecular formula CH3NCO MIC is a highly reactive intermediate chemical used to manufacture
various pesticides. This chemical reacts exothermically with water and produces a poisonous gas
that can be fatal. Carbide s greed for a profit proved to be catastrophic for both Union Carbide and
the town of Bhopal. Carbide reduction of the safety features in the factory resulted in the world s
largest industrial disaster in history. Safety features are in place for the safety of the workers, the
surrounding area, the environment, and the repetition of the company and its owners and sure

DECISION
The Bhopal disaster could have been prevented on many different levels. The Bhopal plant had
many different safety features that would have prevented the disaster from happening altogether,
however, there were more thing that could have prevented the tragedy as well. The Union Carbide
received many reports about MIC and on the conditions of the plant. The most recent being a few
months prior to the disaster. The plant had a medical officer, Kumkum Saxena, whose job was to

Furthermore, it was in the 1870 s where Arinori Mori, Japan s first Ambassador to America,

This suggestion was overpowered, and consequently caused nationalists to rebel against the western

Summary Of Huckleberry Finn
Is it ok to deprive people of education? Is it ok to change the past so that few people don t get

States of America, slavery prevailed despite the huge movements against it. The novel
Huckleberry Finn uses literary fiction to make the reader experience how was life for many
different people during those times. In many places, especially the U. S. A., the book is being

In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain uses language to represent the different personalities of the
characters. In a brilliant way, he makes you understand the background story of each character
and who they are without saying their names with just reading one dialogue. In the 1840s, just
like in the 2015s, people with different races, backgrounds, social status, educations, families
and even experiences can influence a person s manner of speech and accent. Twain makes it
look easy to portray all that in each character through poor grammar . For example with Miss
Watson: Don t gap and stretch like that, Huckleberry why don t you try to behave? (3), in
contrast to Pap: begin to do suthin for him and give him a rest, the law up and goes for him. And
they call that govment! (28), in contrast to Jim: Who? Me? Go long. Doan talk to me bout yo

`` Darkness And Confusion `` By Ann Petry
Ann Petry s novella, In Darkness and Confusion, explicitly exhibits the ramifications of being a
poverty stricken African American in Harlem, New York via the conscious of the extremely
contemplative William Jones. In this short story, readers are allowed to experience William s
anxiety about residing in a slum ridden neighborhood, working at a barely paying job, and the
mental health of his deployed son. In journeying alongside William throughout the weekend,
sharing his past disappointments and disillusionments as well as his hopes and dreams, the
reader is able to discern his feelings of mass frustration. In walking in the shoes of William Jones,
it becomes evident how the entire Black community might be overwhelmed by circumstances
which indubitably inspired and provided rationale for an urban black rebellion. For far too long,
African Americans have been neglected the rights to decent and fair housing. In In Darkness and
Confusion, William Jones expresses his discontentment with the almost cruel living conditions of
the ghettos in Harlem as he stated, It ain t a fit place to live, though (Petry 261). William was
especially motivated to move to a better home to protect his wife, Pink s, ailing health. William
and Pink searched high and low for more decent places to live however, they simply could not
afford decent. Though marketed to those with lower than average incomes, the better housing for
blacks were still deficient and extremely pricy. In

Summary Of The Canterbury Tales And Miller s Tale
In Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, there are 29 pilgrims making their way to Canterbury to see
the shrine to Thomas A Becket, who was martyred there. They are accompanied by Chaucer, the
narrator, and Harry Bailey, the host. The host proposes a storytelling contest to help pass the
time. The Host is the sole judge of the contest, and each story is judged on its entertainment and
moral factors. The winner will receive a free meal, paid for by all the other pilgrims upon their
arrival back at the inn. Each Pilgrim was to tell two stories on the way there, and two on the way
back. The pilgrims stories covered a large spectrum of subjects and morals along the way. The
wide variety of the stories, in a way, makes it easier for the judge to judge the stories, but also
harder. A good example of two very contrasting stories in the contest are the Miller s Tale and the
Man at Law s Tale. The Man at Law s Tale would have won the contest. Even though it is not in
the same rhyme scheme, has a confusing storyline and some evil characters, it is far more clean,
moral, and appropriate than the adultery, lies, and scandal of the Miller s Tale. Before The
Miller s Tale, The Host encourages him not to go, because he is too drunk, and will not be able
to clearly tell a good story. He tells him, Now hold on, Robin, dear old brother;/ We ll get some

Six Sigma is named after the process that has six standard deviations on each side of the
specification window. It is a disciplined, data driven approach and methodology for eliminating
defects. The central idea behind Six Sigma is that if you can measure how many defects you have
in a process, you can systematically figure out how to eliminate them and get as close to zero
defects as possible.
Six Sigma starts with the application of statistical methods for translating information from
customers into specifications for products or services being developed or produced.
Six Sigma is the business strategy and a philosophy of one working smarter not harder.
One sigma gives a precision of 68.27%., two sigma, of 95.45% and three sigma of
99.73%, whereas Six Sigma gives a precision of 99.9997%.Although 99.73% sounds very good, it
slowly dawned on companies that there is a tremendous difference between
99.73% and 99.9997%. For ex. For every million articles of mail, the difference is between 66,738
lost items and 3.4 lost items (Exhibit 1).
5
To achieve Six Sigma Quality, a process must produce no more that 3.4 defects per million
opportunities. An opportunity is defined as a chance for nonconformance, or not meeting the
required specifications. This means one needs to be nearly flawless in executing key processes.
The process and culture is conditioned for zero defects

Mimetics As A Theatre Based Practice
Mimetics is a theatre based practice which calls for children to recall through mental, physical,
emotional interpretations and ideas (Trowsdale Hayhow, 2013). This a nonverbal interactive
communication process based off of imitation through imagination (Trowsdale Hayhow, 2013).
Trowsdale Hayhow (2013) dive right into their research, by examining the capability theory, a
detail used of mimetics as a theatre practice, and by conducting a single subject study of a child

4.4. DATAThe US air emission data employed in this study is obtained from the US
Environmental Protection Agency s national emission inventory (USEPA 2006; 2009), covering
all anthropogenic emissions of six air pollutants (SO2, PM2.5, PM10, NOx, VOC, and NH3) in
the 48 states of the US (excluding Alaska and Hawaii). The gross external damage (GED) is
estimated by Muller et al. (2011). The 2002 industry level GEDs are identified by a six digit
industry code from the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). In total, there are
about 840 NAICS industries included. To account for transferred values of goods and services
through trade, we employ Input Output Accounts (make and use tables) data from the US Bureau

In order to link emissions and damages to the IO data, we match industries in six digit NAICS
code to industries in six digit IO code, and it is no problem for most cases. However, there are
two exceptional cases. One exceptional case is that for 20 IO industries, we cannot find the
matched NAICS industries. That is, there is no information on damages in the 20 IO industries.
Thus, in the baseline model, we leave damages in the 20 industries equal to zero. Another
exceptional case is that with regard to the agricultural industries and construction industries,
damage data are in a more aggregated level. Therefore, disaggregating GEDs are necessary with
respect to those industries. In the baseline model we allocate GEDs in agricultural and
construction industries proportionally to value added. The procedures to handle these two
exceptional cases are explained in Appendix B. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses are carried out
in Section 4.6 to assess changes of results if different approaches are used to handle these issues.
For the simplicity of results presentation and results discussion, we further aggregate the
estimated results into 42 sectors according to the IO code. Hereafter, we refer to the 6 digit IO
industries as industries , and refer to the 42 aggregated IO sectors as sectors . In addition,
according to the sectoral characteristic, the 42 sectors can be allocated into three broad aggregates:

Thomas Rid’s Arguement on the Impossibility of Cyber War...
In the article, Thomas Rid s main argument other than the contention that cyber war will not happen
is that cyber war is completely misplaced if not entirely misunderstood. He argues that the concept
of cyber war is not in tandem with the historical definition and understanding of what constitutes
war. Rid s definition of war, borrowed from Carl von Clausewitz, is that war must constitute three
elements: violence, instrumental and political. (Rid, Cyber War Will Not Take Place, 2012)
Therefore, his main argument against the possibility for cyber war is premised on the idea that
cyber war can never have or express the above three elements. He further argues that at best, cyber
war can achieve some of the above criteria such as violence... Show more content on

He then argues that the actions of Anonymous and other such groups cannot be defined as war
because neither is violence involved nor does any of them openly accepts political attribution;
and their instrumentality is only limited to undermining authority. Secondly, He characterizes
cyber attacks as espionage because often times the main goal is to access secured or confidential
information. Lastly, he considers cyber attacks to be sabotage because the intended aim of the
attack is to disrupt or destroy military or economic installations. (Rid, Cyber War Will Not Take
Place, 2012) Ultimately, for Rid, what has ostensibly been considered to be cyber war are
basically manifestation of age old activities of espionage, sabotage and subversion.
Rid concludes with three points. First, he concludes that low tech cyber activities will have
greater impact on global political stability and in certain scenarios can even lead to conventional
war. He argues that the power of the internet to power social courses presents the greatest threat to
global stability even more than high tech capabilities used in sabotage; this is because mobilizing
and sustaining a movement via is now easier and requires less leadership hence social agitations
are stronger persists for longer. Secondly, he argues that sabotage as form of cyber attack will
continue to rise;

Analysis Of Donald Trump s Politics As A Vocation
In the days following the United States presidential election, many Americans voiced their disbelief
that Donald Trump, a man longtime considered a political joke and nuisance, won the election. But
despite his brashness, entire lack of eloquence, and discriminatory tendencies, Trump was in fact
elected. Many of Trump s supporters attribute his success to his fundamentally different approach to
politics and leadership. Max Webers lecture, Politics as a Vocation, provides an explanation of
how Trump s campaign was successful, why he is perceived as refreshing and different by his
supporters, and how these same supporters were able to overlook Trump s flaws. Weber defines in
his lecture, three ideal types of authority; traditional, legal, and charismatic. Traditional authority
can be associated with Hillary Clinton and her institutionalized style of politics, while Trump is
aligned with charismatic authority. Trump s charismatic leadership style contrasts the traditional
American political approach which contributes to the perception of him as working against the
status quo rather than for it. Weber s description of how... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To be sure, Weber s description of charismatic leadership does not account for all of the forces at
play during the election, but his theory does shed light on why many individuals view Trump s
style of leadership as different and necessary in this current political moment. Weber s discussion of
the charismatic leader as an infallible authority with a perceived legitimate claim of power
highlights why Trump supporters endorsed his rhetoric despite its many logical, political, and
ethical flaws. Yet, according to Weber, Trump s current style of leadership and authority cannot last
in the long term. This may be a comforting or concerning notion, but nonetheless, sheds light on
what may occur during the Trump

Coming Back From an MCL Injury
When it comes to your ability to move around, participate in sports, and simply walk, your knee
joints are vital. The knee itself is made up of multiple ligaments, bones, and tendons and of all of
these different parts that need to work together to make the joint work. One of these parts is called
the medial collateral ligament or MCL. It is responsible for adding a little more stability to your
knee and leg as well as preventing your knee from bending in dangerous directions. If you are
noticing some pain in the inside portion of your knee or possibly you feel unsteady on one or both
of your feet you may have injured your MCL.
Symptoms
Your medial collateral ligament is on the inside part of each leg and... Show more content on
Helpwriting.net ...
These may be signs of damage to your MCL and if you find yourself experiencing some of these,
you should probably have your knee and leg checked out by a medical professional.
Causes
Damaging the tissue of MCL can be common in sports, especially contact sports such as football.
Injuring this part of your knee may also commonly be the result of a direct hit or impact on the
outside of the lower leg and/or knee, which can cause the tissue on the inner side of the leg and
knee joint to stretch or even tear in more traumatic situations. This ligament can also end up being
damaged if the joint becomes hyperextended causing the tissue to stretch and possibly tear.
Treatment
Recovery from an MCL injury is not always fun but there are some things that you can do to help
speed it along and maybe make it a little less painful. Rest is usually always helpful when healing
from just about any injury and MCL injuries are no different, so rest as much as possible and try
to stay off your feet when you are able to. Using a compression brace on your knee might help to
improve blood flow and reduce swelling and it may also aid in reducing the pain you are probably
living with through the healing process.
Another thing that you might want to consider to aid in treating your pain may be ice. Icing the
area of your leg and knee that hurts could lower the level of pain you experience and it could help
lower the amount of swelling

A Career In My Life
Just how I came to Irvine, California, can only be traced to Divine Providence. Originally, I was
a drama major at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois. I had been bitten by the
acting bug after a successful year of speech and drama at McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio.
Although my interests were diverse, I figured that a career in the entertainment field would be a
launching pad into the arena I desired most: world wide in¬fluence. My stay at Wesleyan was
riddled with disappointment. Here I was an energetic freshman drama major with loads of talent
and optimism, only to find main stage acting was unavailable until our sophomore year. The
featured drama my freshman year was Lillian Hellman s, The Little Foxes. I had... Show more

not before quitting the Drama School and bringing charges of racism against the department.
My letter to twenty four Univer¬sity regents caused quite a stir, but was eventually dismissed
and I left in a huff. Getting into the University of California in Irvine took some doing. I fled
Wesleyan with a D grade point average. I withdrew from one class and received an F in two
other classes, but received an A in my speech class. I gave my speech final on Why I was leaving
Wesleyan. Even though I went fifteen minutes over the speech limit, (and we were warned to
never do that in her class,) the teacher gave me the top grade for my inexorable passion. When
my application to UCI was rejected that summer on the basis of poor grades, I used my usual
rhetoric to get my foot in the door. Then came the million dollar question: Where are you going
to get the money to pay for tuition? asked the Dean of Admissions. Armed with a barrage of
words, I looked him in the eyes and questioned how an educational in stitution could deny any
red blooded American student an opportunity for higher learning on a technicality like lack of
money. I ended with: Do you want to see a 4.0? The Dean of Admissions said that the committee
would recon¬sider my application, and after I hung up I said, Mom, pack my bags, I m on my
way to California. Five days later I received an admission letter, only

Christianity in Shakespear s Hamlet
Faith plays a large role in how one lives their life. Christianity plays a strong role throughout Hamlet
by William Shakespeare. When reading the play one must think of the controversies of the time
when Shakespeare writes the play. Reformation and Renaissance opinions are reflected throughout.
Shakespeare deals with very controversial attitudes and religious questions dealing with death, the
existence of purgatory, morality, murder, suicide and marriage
in his play Hamlet. It is obvious
throughout the play that Hamlet s life is guided by his faith and his religious beliefs. At first,
Hamlet sees the ghost of his dead father and vows to avenge his death. Christianityforbids followers

To be, or not to be? That is the question whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and
arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And, by opposing, end
them? To die, to sleep No more and by a sleep to say we end the heartache and the thousand
natural shocks that flesh is heir to tis a consummation Devoutly to be wished! (Shakespeare 53).
At this point Hamlet is questioning whether he should live or die and whether it would be better
to live his life in agony or end it and in turn end the pain. He is troubled that if he were to take his
own life he would end up not in purgatory but in hell because taking one s life was considered to
be an unforgiveable sin. It is unfortunate that Hamlet is in a place in his life where he thinks killing
himself would perhaps be more of an option than living under the circumstances, which surround
him. Hamlet decides that he does not want to risk eternal peace in heaven for peace he may find
while on earth in a difficult situation. Hamlet also uses his Christian ideals when struggling with
the idea of killing his step father. He has several opportunities to do so the primary one is when he
walks in on Claudius praying. Hamlet can t commit murder when the person is praying because
then that would send the person straight to heaven. Hamlet does not want Claudius to end up living
in heaven but rather he wants to make sure that Claudius is sent to Hell. Hamlet

1. Back ground

Thus, it is more important now than at any time in the history of marketing to really understand your
target market and to let this understanding drive not only your marketing decisions, but the entire
decision making framework of the company. (Hiebing Cooper, 2004:4).
Since the preference of customers vary from time to time and meeting their needs, wants and
expectation is an impressive challenge to service providers, strategic thinking of marketing could
be the best way to find the right track as competition is stiffer than the past trend. One to this
developing marketing strategy is crucial in business firms and as Orville C.Walker, Jr., et,al
explained the primary focus of marketing strategy is to effectively allocate and coordinate
marketing resources and activities to accomplish the firms objectives with in a specific product
market. Therefore, the critical issue concerning the scope of a marketing strategy is specifying the
target market(s) for a particular product or product line. Next, firms seek competitive advantage and
synergy through a well integrated program of marketing mix elements (Primarily the 4Ps of
product, price, place, promotion) tailored to the needs and wants of potential customers in that
target market. (2004:12).
As the study of this paper is attributed to service providing firms like Tikur Abay Transport Share

Intern At A Rose Garden Florist
This summer I had the opportunity to intern at A Rose Garden Florist. With this internship I had
goals set in mind that I wanted to accomplish; these goals consisted of being able to identify
plants when I see them, as well as the upkeep and maintenance of a garden, the different care needs
for plants, ways to preserve plants, and for growing them. Digging a hole, putting a seedinto it then
refilling the dirt and watering it was the only way I thought you could grow something. This
summer I found out that you can in fact place seeds between two wet paper towels and they will
start to sprout and once they have you can plantthem into the ground and they will continue to
grow. I feel this is a much better way to start out plants because you have it started before you put
them into the ground and can have an idea of how many will fully grow. However, in order for
them to be able to grow in the area in which you plant them there should be no weeds to choke
them out; this is where being able to tell a difference in plants can come in rather handy. While
weeding out a garden it is important to know the difference between the weeds and new sprouts
of plants you put in a couple weeks before. It is also very beneficial to pull the weeds out as close
to their roots as possible so that they will not reappear; if you only pull off what you see above
ground you will have a weed problem indefinitely and your plants could struggle greatly while
trying to thrive due to the weeds

Deforestation Mitigation Essay
Deforestation Mitigation Strategies
Tropical rainforests cover approximately thirty percent of the earth s land area, around 2.5
million square miles, the size of the lower 48 states, despite the fact 80,000 acres (32,000) hectares
are destroyed per day for economic reasons. Tropical rainforests are biodiversity hotspots.
Rainforests are carbon sinks absorbing about half the carbon dioxide humans release into the
atmosphere. Continued deforestation will affect the entire world with the ecological ramifications
of species extinction, loss of carbon sinks, and loss of renewable resources. Deforestation reduces

The Brosimum Alicastrum Plan.
The Brosimum Alicastrum is a large rainforest tree native to tropical regions and known as the
Maya Nut tree. The tree grows to 130 feet, grows naturally in rainforest soils, can produce an
average of 400 pounds of 100% organic nuts a year and have more vital nutrients than foods
grown on farmed soils. Other than being one of the largest and fastest growing trees of the
rainforest it produces a fruit high in protein, calcium, fiber, iron and vitamins A, E, C, and B.
The nut can be prepared to taste like chocolate, coffee, or even mashed potatoes (The Equilibrium
Fund, 2010). If dried and ground into flour can be used to make cakes, cookies, cereal. The leaves
of the trees are high in nutrients that can be used for cattle fodder (Cable News Network, 2009).
The nut was used in the ancient Mayan culture as food stable with special cultivated orchards
designed specifically for this tree. Over the centuries this nut was forgotten. People living in the in
the areas where the Maya Nut tree now flourishes, don t know about the fruit itself.
Environmentally, this is the ideal tree to use for reforestation; fast growing, producing food,

Comparing The Afterlife In Judaism, And Judaism
The views of the Jewish afterlife can vary between those reading the Torah and the Talmud. The
overall concepts are similar however; the minute details differ between new and old believers in
Judaism. Olam Ha Ba is the Jewish afterlife and means the world to come . Judaism followers
believe in the idea of resurrection and reincarnation as part of their traditional belief system.
They believe that upon death of the human body the soul does not cease to exist. Instead, there is
belief in the afterlife of Olam Ha Ba. There are a few ways to get there and guidelines as to how
much of this space is shared with the believers. We have seen in many religions that the focus is on
what will happen in the afterlife, whereas with Judaismwe see the focus put on their time on Earth
not the time in Olam Ha Ba. During their time on Earth they are to prepare for their time in the
afterlife by studying the Torah and performing mitzvot, or good deeds. With Judaism, we do not
see much dogma so there is much of the religionleft up to personal interpretation. This leads to a
few different viewpoints and detail changes throughout different sects. For the Orthodox Jews we
see the belief that some may go to a heaven... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The righteous people will be resurrected only at that time and the others who have done bad
deeds and are considered wicked will be left dead. The Talmud shows us that all people will
share in Olam Ha Ba. This is interesting because many religions see theirs as the only way to get
to their heaven. It is stated that the righteous will have a larger share than those who have done bad
things in their life. Certain aspects of the decision that are made on Earth are to affect the
individuals stake in Olam Ha Ba. I find this interesting because in Christianity all of Gods followers
will share heaven equally where here that is not the

  • 3. Conflict Between Xerxes And Herodotus Amidst the diversity of ideas and concepts that Herodotus develops throughout his History, the notion that highly different political structures do exist and may eventually clash is a prominent one. In accord with Herodotus manner of incidentally placing the essential cores of his arguments and observations in microcosmic episodes scattered across the body of his narrative, the exchange between Xerxes and Demaratus in passages 101 105 of Book 7 serves as a gateway into exploring and discussing the ways in which the Greeksand the Persians differ, both politically and socially. Through the contrast between the Greeks and the Persians that the conversation depicts, Herodotus advances his narrative wide delineation of the disparity between the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Firstly, the dialogue is part of a series of implicit and explicit references in the History to the radically different ways of living and governance that are exhibited by different societies. Throughout their conversation, Xerxes and Demaratus juxtaposing assertions fuel Herodotus ongoing discussion of what sets the Greeks and the Persians apart. This contrast, in turn, reveals the disparity between those governed by the rule of law and those governed by an autocratic emperor. In the History the Persian monarchy, as the prime example of unity under a centralized authority figure, is consistently portrayed as resting on principles of fear, subservient conformity, and blind loyalty. An example of this can be seen when Herodotus notes: All the rest of the Persians held their tongues and did not venture to declare a judgment opposite to that which was in discussion (7.10). This oft mentioned inability of the Persians to freely express their opinions and thoughts without fear of punishment goes into suggesting the foundations of the Persian autocracy. The compulsion of lash that Xerxes proudly favors during the dialogue becomes a potent symbol of monarchy in History: ...and many of the barbarians fell; for behind their regiments their captains with whips in their hands flogged on every man of them, pressing them ... Changes can be categorized into two aspects: politically and socially. On politics, Popes were not as strong as they were due to conflicts between the state and the church. Socially, people began to live a religion dominated life, and experienced active sexism towards women. These changes, either positive or negative, have become an undivided part of European History. People faced the rise and the fall of the Catholic Churchduring the medieval time. The Popesused to hold the final authority for the church and over the state. Not long King Phillip arrested Pope Boniface VIII in Italy and had foreshadowed later conflicts between the church and the state in the 14th century. The decline of church power became even more apparent during the Babylonian Captivity (1309 1376). Pope Clement V s agreement on King Philip s request of settlement in Avignon in southwestern France first signified the Pope s leadership and authority had been weakened. Furthermore, after Gregory XI s death, Urban VI (1378 1389) had been planning on church reform, but his endorsement of opposition among the hierarchy had triggered a serious of disaster. As a result, Cardinal Robert of Geneva was elected to be Pope and took the name Clement VII. The situation became two popes in office: Urban at Rome and the anti pope Clement VII at Avignon, hence marked the beginning of the Great Schism. In Beowulf, during the Fight with Grendel, Grendel is coming once more to feast upon the men of the grounds of Hrothar. Though unbeknownst to him, it is a trap, and Beowulfis lying in wait to defeat the beast. The fight is well detailed, and Beowulf wins and takes Grendels arm as a trophy, having got it by ripping it off with his bare hands. As it is stated here, Yet he bought his freedom At a high price, for he left his hand and arm and shoulder to show he had been here (Heaney, line 969, 971). Similarities Between The Balloon And The Red Balloon GEORGETA HARPAD ESL 101 JOBST Love and Friendship Stopping for a few seconds to admire a flower, an insect, a phenomenon of nature, an architecture, etc., in days full of worries, have become memorable. Also, all these seconds sent me every time into a wonderful world, just like Confucius said, Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it . The short films The Balloon directed by Martynas Zaremba and The Red Balloon directed by Albert Lamorisse have the plot people s reaction for a few seconds at sight of a black balloon. The Balloon film submits a series of reactions from various people in the city caused by a simple black balloon with no intended meaning. The balloon starts to appear above the city one night while people were sleeping. The Red Balloon , too shows an emotional story of friendship between a boy called Pascal, and his red balloon. The writer and director Lamorisse succeeds through fiction to combine reality, the wonder, and the magic of this friendship. In both short films, the main focus is a floating balloon, but I believe that their differences are more striking than their similarities. Both films The Balloon and The Red Balloon have a similar high point. In my opinion The Balloon high point is that when the balloon appears on a street where a bad boy with a knife in his hand is ready to commit an act of violence. The presence of the balloon in that area stops the bad boy to commit it. Moreover, the bad boy looks his way to sky to admire the balloon for a few seconds. Likewise, the balloon from Lamorisse s film avoid an act of violence. For example, a gang of older kids chases Pascal around city, determined to steal and destroy his balloon. The red balloon performs a miracle, it saves little Pascal from that chase. It sacrifices itself and lets itself tortured with stones to save Pascal s life. Furthermore, the red balloon dies for this cause. However, in three distinct ways, The Balloon and The Red Balloon films are almost opposites. First of all, their score is very different. The Balloon film sound source is the song with lyrics titled Time to Leave of the band Suicide DJs. The lyrics can provide depth, powerful to the song, and make the audience to ... • 24. How Violent Media Affects Children There is a very important social issue that must be addressed to save our future generations from decline. The social issue I will be analyzing is how violence in media affects children. Thus brutality itself becomes at once the means to success and the content of success a success that is defined in its most general terms, not as accomplishment or specific gain, but simply as the unlimited possibility of aggression(Warshow 433). Doing evil deeds to reach a certain level of success is how a gangster reaches success and this perception of bad being good clouds children s judgement to do the right thing. Children are wrongly influenced by many mediums including drug abuse in movies, anger management and video game violence. Violence in media affects children in a negative way by influencing them to use drugs, become bullies and mature into abusive adults because it gives people a false sense of reality towards violent behavior. The main reason is how children use violence to stand out in a negative way among other Children. Using violence to fit in with a group of people by doing drugs or being a bully towards others is a very common example. Many groups use peer pressure to appeal to the crowd. In fact, one of the most crucial parts of a child s growth can stem from youth sports. Taking a look at youth sports as a whole it has become nearly encoded within our modern society to have our kids participate in some sort of recreational or club type atmosphere. Alison Prichard a top physical educator stated that There is little doubt that the world is infatuated by sports. People watch them, analyze them, argue about them, spend money on them, and encourage their children to play them. Not surprisingly, youth sport is the most popular structured activity in the United States, with an estimated 45 million American children enrolled in an organized program or team in 2005 (Prichard, 2015). Youth sports has a plethora of positive aspects, and elements that stream from it, the importance and impact that come along with each of these is where different arguments are made and disagreements about the role they play occurs. At first glance, most would state the obvious benefit from youth sports would be the physical aspect of the game which helps children more than anything be able to create an environment and atmosphere in which they are active. Colonialism, By Lois Tyson Essay Colonialism, the hunger to expand and conquer causes the world, becomes an endless arena for the fight for dominance and inevitable discrimination that follows. Even once colonization ends, the natives are not immediately free because of the aftermath that remains in the dust colonization leaves behind. One inevitable result of colonization is the establishment of social hierarchy that continues into postcolonial society. In Using Colonialism/ Postcolonialism Critical Theory, Lois Tyson eloquently explains the consequences of colonialism and the different facets of Postcolonialism. First, in a colonial social hierarchy, unquestionably, the members of the colonizing culture occupy the top rungs of the ladder (Tyson 248 9). Meanwhile, those who occupy the bottom rungs of the colonialist social ladder whether their inferior status is based on race... or any other cultural factor are called subalterns, who are then othered by the colonized, who believe their dominance and authority is validation for their discrimination (Tyson 249). Through othering, the savage is... therefore, not considered fully human (Tyson 248). This mindset does not belong purely to the colonists, but applies to the colonized as well. To elaborate, Tyson uses the term colonized consciousness to describe subalterns who internalize... the colonialist belief that those different from a society s dominant culture are inferior (Tyson 249). In a general perspective, different theories have tried to associate this trend in corruption with specific cultural and historical traditions, political institutions, levels of economic development, as well as government policies. However, there is more to consider in this argument since corruption is also prominent in countries with histories of British rule, protestant traditions, and less economic development. An exploration of the deep roots of the defined Us vs. Them way of thinking in Japanese society as well as its use in protecting the Japanese cultural and national identity will be discussed. Furthermore, it was in the 1870 s where Arinori Mori, Japan s first Ambassador to America, suggested that English should be considered as the national language of Japan because the Japanese language had become too intricate and corrupted from earlier Chinese influence (Joseph, 2011). This suggestion was overpowered, and consequently caused nationalists to rebel against the western hegemony, going so far as to assassinate Arinori Mori in 1889 (Ike, 1995). • 40. Summary Of The Canterbury Tales And Miller s Tale In Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, there are 29 pilgrims making their way to Canterbury to see the shrine to Thomas A Becket, who was martyred there. They are accompanied by Chaucer, the narrator, and Harry Bailey, the host. The host proposes a storytelling contest to help pass the time. The Host is the sole judge of the contest, and each story is judged on its entertainment and moral factors. The winner will receive a free meal, paid for by all the other pilgrims upon their arrival back at the inn. Each Pilgrim was to tell two stories on the way there, and two on the way back. The pilgrims stories covered a large spectrum of subjects and morals along the way. The wide variety of the stories, in a way, makes it easier for the judge to judge the stories, but also harder. A good example of two very contrasting stories in the contest are the Miller s Tale and the Man at Law s Tale. The Man at Law s Tale would have won the contest. Even though it is not in the same rhyme scheme, has a confusing storyline and some evil characters, it is far more clean, moral, and appropriate than the adultery, lies, and scandal of the Miller s Tale. Before The Miller s Tale, The Host encourages him not to go, because he is too drunk, and will not be able to clearly tell a good story. He tells him, Now hold on, Robin, dear old brother;/ We ll get some better man to tell another;/ You wait a bit. Let s have some common sense. (21 23). In order to link emissions and damages to the IO data, we match industries in six digit NAICS code to industries in six digit IO code, and it is no problem for most cases. However, there are two exceptional cases. One exceptional case is that for 20 IO industries, we cannot find the matched NAICS industries. That is, there is no information on damages in the 20 IO industries. Thus, in the baseline model, we leave damages in the 20 industries equal to zero. Another exceptional case is that with regard to the agricultural industries and construction industries, damage data are in a more aggregated level. Therefore, disaggregating GEDs are necessary with respect to those industries. In the baseline model we allocate GEDs in agricultural and construction industries proportionally to value added. The procedures to handle these two exceptional cases are explained in Appendix B. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses are carried out in Section 4.6 to assess changes of results if different approaches are used to handle these issues. For the simplicity of results presentation and results discussion, we further aggregate the estimated results into 42 sectors according to the IO code. In the article, Thomas Rid s main argument other than the contention that cyber war will not happen is that cyber war is completely misplaced if not entirely misunderstood. He argues that the concept of cyber war is not in tandem with the historical definition and understanding of what constitutes war. Rid s definition of war, borrowed from Carl von Clausewitz, is that war must constitute three elements: violence, instrumental and political. (Rid, Cyber War Will Not Take Place, 2012) Therefore, his main argument against the possibility for cyber war is premised on the idea that cyber war can never have or express the above three elements. He further argues that at best, cyber war can achieve some of the above criteria such as violence... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He then argues that the actions of Anonymous and other such groups cannot be defined as war because neither is violence involved nor does any of them openly accepts political attribution; and their instrumentality is only limited to undermining authority. Lastly, he considers cyber attacks to be sabotage because the intended aim of the attack is to disrupt or destroy military or economic installations. (Rid, Cyber War Will Not Take Place, 2012) Ultimately, for Rid, what has ostensibly been considered to be cyber war are basically manifestation of age old activities of espionage, sabotage and subversion. Rid concludes with three points. First, he concludes that low tech cyber activities will have greater impact on global political stability and in certain scenarios can even lead to conventional war. He argues that the power of the internet to power social courses presents the greatest threat to global stability even more than high tech capabilities used in sabotage; this is because mobilizing and sustaining a movement via is now easier and requires less leadership hence social agitations are stronger persists for longer. • 52. Intern At A Rose Garden Florist This summer I had the opportunity to intern at A Rose Garden Florist. With this internship I had goals set in mind that I wanted to accomplish; these goals consisted of being able to identify plants when I see them, as well as the upkeep and maintenance of a garden, the different care needs for plants, ways to preserve plants, and for growing them. Digging a hole, putting a seedinto it then refilling the dirt and watering it was the only way I thought you could grow something. This summer I found out that you can in fact place seeds between two wet paper towels and they will start to sprout and once they have you can plantthem into the ground and they will continue to grow. I feel this is a much better way to start out plants because you have it started before you put them into the ground and can have an idea of how many will fully grow. However, in order for them to be able to grow in the area in which you plant them there should be no weeds to choke them out; this is where being able to tell a difference in plants can come in rather handy. While weeding out a garden it is important to know the difference between the weeds and new sprouts of plants you put in a couple weeks before. It is also very beneficial to pull the weeds out as close to their roots as possible so that they will not reappear; if you only pull off what you see above ground you will have a weed problem indefinitely and your plants could struggle greatly while trying to thrive due to the weeds ... Deforestation Mitigation Essay Deforestation Mitigation Strategies Tropical rainforests cover approximately thirty percent of the earth s land area, around 2.5 million square miles, the size of the lower 48 states, despite the fact 80,000 acres (32,000) hectares are destroyed per day for economic reasons. People living in the in the areas where the Maya Nut tree now flourishes, don t know about the fruit itself. • 56. Comparing The Afterlife In Judaism, And Judaism The views of the Jewish afterlife can vary between those reading the Torah and the Talmud. The overall concepts are similar however; the minute details differ between new and old believers in Judaism. Olam Ha Ba is the Jewish afterlife and means the world to come . Judaism followers believe in the idea of resurrection and reincarnation as part of their traditional belief system. They believe that upon death of the human body the soul does not cease to exist. Instead, there is belief in the afterlife of Olam Ha Ba. There are a few ways to get there and guidelines as to how much of this space is shared with the believers. We have seen in many religions that the focus is on what will happen in the afterlife, whereas with Judaismwe see the focus put on their time on Earth not the time in Olam Ha Ba. During their time on Earth they are to prepare for their time in the afterlife by studying the Torah and performing mitzvot, or good deeds.
