2. Abstract
The objective of this project is to describe the
observation and construction of a SCADA system. Supervisory
Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) for water distribution systems
monitor and control pipes transporting water from pump stations or
reservoirs to various places within the distribution area. SCADA
systems are regularly implemented in water resource industries to
improve maintenance, operation, reliable and secure water supply to
customers. The SCADA system consists of a master system that
communicates with the Remote Terminal Units (RTU) to gather data
and check the values for the optimum functioning of the water
distribution system. The SCADA system checks various parameters
like the pressure, temperature, density of the water inside the pipe.
It is an industrial control system where a computer system

3. Introduction
Water distribution and management has
always been a problem or challenge for many countries (even well
developed countries). Poor infrastructure or inefficient management
of water supply result in inconvenience and unsatisfied customers
due to insufficient supply of water to different places across the state
at right time, increased cost of supply, etc A properly designed
SCADA system saves time and money by eliminating the need for
service personnel to visit each site for inspection, data
collection/logging or make adjustments. Supervisory Control and
Data Acquisition systems are computers, controllers, instruments;
actuators, networks, and interfaces that manage the control of
automated industrial processes and allow analysis of those systems
through data collection .They are used in all types of industries, from
electrical distribution systems, to food processing, to facility security
alarms.

4. SCADA System Concept
The term SCADA usually refers
to centralized systems which monitor and control entire sites, or
complexes of systems spread out over large areas (anything between
an industrial plant and a country)

5. SCADA Basics
Before discussing about the architecture of
SCADA and different types of SCADA systems, primarily we must
know a few SCADA basics. Consider the block diagram of SCADA
system shown in the figure which consists of different blocks, namely
Human-machine Interface (HMI), Supervisory system, Remote
terminal units, PLCs, Communication infrastructure and SCADA

8. The SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition)
systems are different from distributed control systems
that are commonly found in plant sites.
When distributed control systems cover the plant site,
SCADA system cover much larger geographic areas.
The figure depicts an integrated SCADA architecture
which supports TCP/IP, UDP and other IP based
communication
protocols as well as industrial protocols like Modbus
TCP, Modbus over TCP or Modbus over UDP.
These all work over cellular, private radio or satellite
networks.

The choice of the existing communication depends on
the characterization of a number of factors.
These factors impact the final decision for SCADA
architecture.
Therefore, a review of SCADA systems evolution allows
us to better understand many security concerns.
Types of SCADA Systems
First Generation: Monolithic or Early SCADA systems,
Second Generation: Distributed SCADA systems,
Third Generation: Networked SCADA systems and
Fourth Generation: Internet of things technology, SCADA
systems

11. Conclusion
Monitoring and controlling
of multiple operations in maximum number
of industries are being automatically
controlled by most advanced SCADA
technology implementations.it reduced error
caused by Humans.
