Understand your bills
Basic:
Read your bill in detail – notice what you are actually paying for
How much are you paying for electricity (and natural gas)?
What is the average price per kWh (or MJ)?
Advanced:
What kind of tariff are you on?
Do you have network demand charges?
If so, how much do those charges contribute to the overall bill?

Record your energy consumption as soon as you get the bill

Where does your energy go?
Basic:
If you have heating or cooling it is probably where most of the energy goes
Most of the other energy goes to lighting and equipment
Advanced:
Observe your space and note what consumes energy
Does this piece of equipment need to be on?
Is the equipment energy efficient (energy star rating)?
Could the equipment be run at a time when the tariff is cheaper?
Pro:
Engage an energy auditor
List all your energy consuming equipment, their Wattage, the time it is run for and
when it is run. Add everything up – is the total roughly your annual energy
consumption?

Talk to your staff about turning equipment off at night

Track your energy consumption year-on-year
Decide on some basic upgrades and get a few quotes
Implement a proper operations and maintenance schedule for equipment

List all opportunities where you can reduce the operating hours or improve the
efficiency of the equipment or both

Basic:
Change the set point of the A/C to 18° in winter and 24° in summer
Close doors and windows to the outside to contain air conditioned air
Advanced:
Insulate and draught-proof the building, supplement the A/C with fans
Close window shades to avoid heat gain (or heat loss in winter)
Start the A/C one hour later (morning) and turn off one hour earlier (evening)
Change old lighting solutions to energy efficient ones
