- The document discusses the introduction and use of Sass and Compass for a large-scale e-commerce site.
- Key aspects covered include using Sass features like nesting, mixins, extends and @import to organize CSS, Compass features like sprite generation and creating a style guide.
- The results of adopting Sass/Compass included improved development speed and a 40% increase in site traffic over 4 months.
There is often a vocabulary gap between designers an developers, who should aim towards a ubiquitous way of conversing about colours, typography, viewport sizes, or the responsive grid system of a digital product… To bridge this gap at the Guardian, we use a CSS pre-processor as a communication enabler through the abstractions it allows us to put in place.

Performance matters and probably everyone hears that 1-second delay in page response can result in a 7% reduction in conversion, translating it to sales, potentially you are going to lose $2.5 million every year if your store is making $100.000 per day.
Even the best-optimized back-end solution can be ruined by the bunch of JavaScript libraries or even just not optimised images. It’s really easy to forget about front-end performance or let you clients ruin it just by adding unoptimized content and tons of tracking scripts.
I’ll show you a way to easily measure the Magento 2 front-end performance and how to find and eliminate bottlenecks. The talk will also cover common mistakes and show how different configuration options will affect page load and user experience.

In this presentation, I have shown how a webpage is loaded on your viewport after you request for the same. The process is simple. Once you click on the URL, the browser makes a request to the webserver. The request is processed by the webserver.
Web server files the response to the request and sends it to the browser. The requested page is sent to the web browser. The browser then loads and renders the page content. The requested page is then shown on the viewport.

In the last couple of years, security has become a bigger focus point and it hasn’t been different for WordPress. During this talk, I dive into this a bit more by focusing on our role in making sure that projects are delivered as secure as they can be. This by going over several security issues that were discovered this year and ways how you can prevent yourself.
Slides from my speech about web apps performance. Images, CSS, JS optimization. PHP and HTTP server effects + caching. Performance profiling with Blackfire.io, debugging with Xdebug.

Redirects:
- Mod_alias and mod_rewrite
- Most common redirect types (domain migrations, subdomain to folder and folder renaming and how to deal with duplicate content).
Indexing & Crawling:
- Set HTTP headers for canonicals and meta robots for non-HTML files.
Website speed:
- Gzip and Deflate
- Cache control
Which would you rather have: A rich design or a fast user experience? Users want both, but sometimes the interplay between design and performance feels like a fixed sum game: One side’s gain is the other side’s loss. Design and performance are indeed connected, but it’s more like the yin and yang. They aren’t opposing forces, but instead complement each other. Users want an experience that is rich and fast. The trick for us as designers and developers is figuring out how to do that.
The answer is to adopt an approach that considers both design and performance from the outset. With this approach, designs are conceived by teams of designers and developers working together. Developers benefit by participating in the product definition process. Designers benefit from understanding more about how designs are implemented. There’s an emphasis on early prototyping and tracking performance from the get-go.
With new metrics that focus on what a user actually sees as the page loads, we can now bridge the technical and language gaps that have hindered the seamless creation of great user experiences. In this presentation, Steve Souders, former Chief Performance Yahoo! and Google head performance engineer, explains how promoting a process that brings design and performance together at the beginning of a project helps deliver a web experience that is both fast and rich.

How to investigate and recover from a security breach – real-life experiences with WordPress
Sometimes the bad guys get in, despite all the protections and precautions. If that happens, there are many techniques that can be used to stop further damage, track down what the intruder did and how they got in. Finally the site needs to be cleaned up and re-opened for visitors. In this talk the most important techniques are presented along with real-life examples when they were used.

Refresh Tallahassee: The RE/MAX Front End StoryRachael L Moore
Come join us downstairs at the Proof Brewing Company for another excellent evening of inspiration! Rachael Moore, the front-end lead on the new remax.com, has kindly agreed to share the story and take a peek under the hood of this massive (and really nicely done) site. Among the likely topics of discussion are: Object-oriented CSS, CSS preprocessors, JavaScript frameworks, and the ins and outs of working with a distributed team.
The New UI - Staying Strong with Flexbox, SASS, and {{Mustache.js}}Eric Carlisle
This presentation is a hands-on workshop exploring a medley of client-side web technologies. Flexbox is a CSS layout model that may simplify what usually are very complex layouts. SASS is a CSS wrapper extension / preprocessor allowing CSS to me more maintainable and approachable. Mustache.js is an logicless HTML tool using JavaScript.
SPA, isomorphic and back to the server: our journey with JavaScript @ JsDay 2...Alessandro Nadalin
We've been toying around with JS since 4 years, trying to figure out what's the best approach to build mobile-friendly apps that would offer the best performances on mobile devices.
We first went SPA and then decided to take a different approach.
2 years ago we presented a talk, at this very same conference, about how we decided to tackle our problems on mobile with an isomorphic application.
Today, we would like to guide you through 2 years of that choice and why we decided to take a step back and go revamp our mobile website again, with server-side rendering and a pinch of React.
Fast and wicked performance ahead!
Web Frontend development: tools and good practices to (re)organize the chaosMatteo Papadopoulos
After my first attempt to "organize the chaos" (2012) in the structure of a front-end project, Stefano Verna (@steffoz) and I, have tried to bring together a number of tools and conventions to deal with front-end development in a way that could be understandable and maintainable, over the time, by a whole team.
This presentation has been performed, for the first time, during the Ruby-Day-2014 in Venice, Italy.

Rapid Prototyping with Sass, Compass and Middleman by Bermon PainterCodemotion
This talk will cover some of the benefits of building a rapid prototyping framework with Sass & Compass along with the static site generator, Nanoc. you’ll discover how to rapid prototype pages, widgets and interactions that can be used for usability testing and to help concept ideas. Since it’s all built on Ruby it’s easy to migrate over to the real application later or toss away

Large Drupal projects will generally have a themer or five working alongside the developers, site builders and designers. Themers are the magicians who transform what Drupal wants to do into what the designer wants it to do.
Smaller projects also usually need someone on the team who can make sense of Drupal's output, knows more CSS and JS than anyone else and can configure Views with their eyes closed.
The thing is — and whisper this, if possible redundancy concerns you — we can bypass the themer entirely.
With some simple configuration, a site builder can get Drupal to output exactly the semantic, lightweight markup that any modern front-end designer would be proud of. The designer can be left alone to write the most appropriate HTML, CSS and JS, while the site builder need only choose a couple of options when putting together content types, views and panels to make Drupal behave.
A friendly developer may have to lend a hand every now and then, but that’s it. You can get rid of the themer altogether.

tissa is a simple timer app for iOS. There are absolutely no unnecessary buttons; it is simply an application devoted to marking the passage of time. The main font was created from scratch for this application. In addition to the timer function, there is a clock and a stopwatch, for a total of three modes, each of which can be easily switched with a swipe.
